The University Of Hyderabad (UOH) has been ranked 4th among India’s best Universities. The rankings were released by Smt.Smriti Zubin Irani, Human Resource Minister on 4-April-2016 at Vignan Bhavan, New Delhi. A survey was conducted among 230 universities where UOH secured the 2nd place among all Universities of India after Jawaharlal Nehru University. UOH has been surveyed under following criterion;

  • Teaching, Learning and Resources
  • Research, Professional Practice and Collaborative Performance
  • Graduation outcomes
  • Outreach and
  • Perception

History of University;

The University was established in the year 1974. Shri.B.D.Jatti was the first vice-chancellor of the University. The motto of the University is “Education results in liberation”. The university was established by clearing a forest area of 2300 acres. The university has been rich flora and fauna where more than 315 species were present three decades ago. The university has fifteen species now which are also on the verge of extinction. The present vice-chancellor of the university is Prof.Appa Rao Polide.

Reasons for ranking UOH as Top-4;

The University of Hyderabad is one of the best Universities in India after Jawaharlal Nehru University. The University has been consistently ranked as one among the best universities in India especially in the field of research. The University also won ‘Visitors award’ in the year 2015 by the Honorable president of India. The University gives a lot of scope for research activities. Research scholars from various states opt UOH for research activities in various specializations. The University has a strength of 5000 students and 400 faculty members. Students from all the states come to study in this prestigious institution.

The University does not let its students confine themselves to bookish knowledge. The main motive of the University is to give an exposure to the students on various issues. The teaching process allows students to interpret research and analyze the topic. This is ably supported by the University Library which is named after former Prime Minister Smt. Indira Gandhi. The library adds an extra scope for research activities.

Once a student enters into university, he will be out after graduation with a lot of exposure and practical approach. He/she will be capable of excelling them in research and profession. The University has excellent placement facilities. The students of the university are highly skilled and talented. Most of the corporate companies carve for skilled people where UOH would be the best option. The students are selected at the highest package. The University has Placement Guidance and Advisory Bureau (PGAB) where placement talks are arranged and facilities are provided for campus interviews. A large number of students secured jobs in multinational companies and various government agencies. Students are kept up to date about the various government exam notifications and regarding campus placements by PGAB. Separate placement cells are available for each and every department of University.

The University has 14 schools of study and 19 specialized centers. Each and every school of study has its own reputation. The University is famous for all its courses offered including the specialized courses.

The University is famous for research activities. Every department has a high research activity awarding more than 300 doctorates every year. The University gets funding for research activities from UGC, CSIR, FIST, DBT and DST. The university gives a high scope for qualitative research activities along outstanding faculty in Sciences and Humanities.

The University follows a continuous assessment process where 40% of marks are awarded through assignments. The examinations are conducted semester wise where the remaining 60% marks are awarded. The toppers of various departments will be awarded medals. The highest grade is ‘A+’ and the lowest grade id ‘D’.

An entrance test is conducted by University in the month of February and interviews for qualified candidates in the entrance test in the month of May. One has to qualify in both written test and interview to secure a seat in University. There is a lot of competition for admission. The admission procedure is mostly based on merit and reservation system directed by UGC.

Parents feel that to secure a seat in this university is considered as one of the greatest achievements. Students too fell lucky and excited to study in a University like UOH. All the courses of the university have its own importance and reputation. It’s not apt to say a particular stream is best.

The students of this University have a great exposure for Industrial interface. Industrial visits, participating in seminars, guest lectures, debates, group discussions, practical tests are a common core of the curriculum. These allow students to develop a healthy and systematic way of learning. Along with curriculum, the University also inculcates moral values and personality development among the students.

Infrastructure facilities in University

The University has a vast campus of 2300 acres. There are separate campuses for each and every school of study. There are separate campuses for specialized courses. There are 21 hostels in the campus out of which 8 are women hostels and 13 are men hostel. There are separate hostels for International and non-local students. There are four canteens in the campus. Two shopping complexes are present in North and South campus. The University has 4 multipurpose auditoriums. DST auditorium is the biggest auditorium of the campus which can accommodate 700 students at a time. The entire campus a has Wi-Fi facility. Mineral water plant was set up in the year 2006 which provides mineral water for entire campus and hostels. This auditorium is mostly used for cultural fests, screening of documentaries. All the departments have separate labs and practical training centers. In one word to say, “The University has all the infrastructure facilities which are essential for a university”.

To conclude UOH is one among the best universities in India which a student can opt to experience a research-based learning and overall development. It is a place to enrich knowledge, new ideas and research attitude. If a student manages to qualify in written test and interview by overcoming the tough competition, the university changes the life turn of a student.
