Why Jagiroad College is gaining attention among Assam students: Jagiroad College was founded in 1979, and it is one of the reputable institutions of learning in Assam. The college has been in the news recently because of some administrative developments, which created a more substantial interest in the students throughout the state. The college has just recently received the Autonomous status awarded by the Union Grant Commission (UGC) as one of the academic milestones, thanks to its good results and academic performance that have been consistent. Moreover, the college has also featured in the news because of the development of the state-of-the-art Science Block. Lastly, the college was also in the limelight with it being ranked the second-best college in the science stream in Assam according to a survey by India Today. Jagiroad College Conferred with Autonomous Status

In June 2025, Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu announced that the University Grants Commission (UGC) had given Jagiroad College autonomous status a 10-year tenure, between 2025 and 2035. This achievement is an indication of the stability of the academic performance and reputation of the institute. College Principal Dr Bhaben Chandra Neog also presented a detailed 10-year plan of future development of the college.

What does Autonomous Status for Jagiroad College mean?

The fact that Jagiroad College is an autonomous institution implies that the institution has been given more autonomy over its academic affairs, whilst still remaining part of its parent university and being recognised by the UGC. This gives the college the capability to plan and develop its own curriculum, to create new courses, to administer examinations, and to assess students within the college, making academic changes faster and more industry-oriented learning to be possible. Nonetheless, the awarding of degrees will still be done by the affiliating university and the college must follow the UGC norms and quality standards during the autonomy period between 2025 and 2035.

New Science Block in Jagiroad College

In December 2025, the Assam Water Resource Minister, Pijush Hazarika, inaugurated the laying of a new Science Block at Vigyan Bhawan at Jagiroad College. The project will be built at a total cost of INR 5 Crore and should take around 14,000 square feet of area. The new state of the art Sciecne Block shall comprise of four laboratories and shall also strive to encourage a practical atmosphere in researching and learning science.

Also in the same event, 88 meritorious students were given scooters by the minister under Dr Bani Kanta Kakati Merit Award, 2025, through the Pragyan Bharati Scheme. Also, Mr. Hazarika announced the project of a Green Stadium at Jagiroad college that will encourage sports and physical health of students.

Jagiroad College Ranked 2nd in India Today Survey

The Jagiroad College was named the 2 nd best Science Stream college in the state of Assam in a survey on India Today. The Best College Ranking Survey Report was published on June 24, 2025, and it assessed different streams of colleges. The Jagiroad College was 7th in the Arts streams. Moreover, the college was ranked 138th and 162nd at the national level in Science and Arts streams, respectively.
