The Government College of Engineering and Leather Technology (GCELT), offers the courses in the domain of Leather Technology. GCELT Kolkata finds itself among the very few inaugural institutes in the stream of leather technology education and research in India. Established way back in the year 1919, the GCELT was initially named as 'Calcutta Research Tannery' and was suggested at exploring India-made resources of hides, skins and tanning materials by the Mutation Board, under British Raj, after the World War I. Since then GCELT has played an important role in the development of leather industry in the country. Accredited by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), the GCELT is affiliated to West Bengal University of Technology, Kolkata. Apart from being full fledged academic engineering institute GCELT is also a Public Funded Research Institute. Under the Ministry of Science and Technology, the long running institute is recognized by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research India. Sanctioned as a College, GCELT is to a certain extent pinned in research activities as well, by the Ministry of Finance. Inching towards the century of excellence, some of the prominent courses offered at GCELT are B.Tech and M.Tech courses with specialization in Leather Technology, Computer Science and Engineering and Information Technology. Whereas, some certificate/ advance diploma boot making, shoe making and other leather goods making. The facilitates at GCELT comprise of advance laboratory facilitates, hostel and mess facilitates, central library with huge database, canteen and sports facilities.

First, we would like to introduce our college in brief. Our college is one of the leading engineering colleges in the state. This institution was set up by Prof. B. M. Das in 1919 under the control of the then British Government. Considering the market and students demand AICTE approved B.Tech. Courses in Information Technology and Computer Science and Engineering have been introduced in 2000 and 2001 respectively. Intake to our college so far has been from top 10% of the students admitted to different engineering/ technological colleges and selected through JEE examination of the state.

The college undergoes paradigm shift in the start of 21st Century with the change in location from Pagladanga to the prime location of Salt Lake on E. M. By Pass next to the West Bengal University of Juridical Sciences in the year 1994. The mono disciplinary College dimensionally changes into a multi disciplinary one. Of late, two new disciplines in B. Tech. namely, Information Technology (IT) in 2000 and Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) in 2001 have been introduced.
