What undergraduate research opportunities are available to BTech students at IIT Gandhinagar?
IIT Gandhinagar places strong emphasis on undergraduate research. Nearly 40% of its BTech graduates have received international research opportunities at top global institutions and organisations, among the highest rates in the country. The institute also runs a competitive Summer Research Internship Programme (SRIP) for students who wish to pursue research on campus. Beyond this, the institute maintains a liberal travel support policy to encourage undergraduate students to attend scientific conferences abroad and present their research work. All BTech students are also required to complete a mandatory 4-credit open project course in a discipline of their choice after their first year.
What is the BTech curriculum structure at IIT Gandhinagar?
The BTech at IIT Gandhinagar is an 8-semester, 4-year programme with a distinctly interdisciplinary structure. It begins with a 4-week foundation programme covering creativity, ethics, teamwork, and communication. The 1st year is largely common across all branches, incorporating life sciences, design thinking, humanities, and mathematics alongside branch-specific engineering subjects. IIT Gandhinagar MTech 2026 FAQs

Can MTech students at IIT Gandhinagar do their thesis in industry or outside their discipline?
Yes, and this is one of the more distinctive features of the MTech programme at IITGN. Students have a lot of flexibility in designing their academic path and can carry out their research even outside their immediate discipline or even in industry, all while developing an insight and perspective that is geared towards pushing the boundaries of knowledge. The programme aims at graduating well-rounded engineers ready to pursue leadership careers in R&D, teaching or industry. This means an MTech student in Mechanical Engineering could, for instance, work on a thesis problem in collaboration with an industry partner at the IITGN Research Park, or pursue a cross-disciplinary problem that sits at the intersection of their branch and another department. The thesis advisor and the student jointly decide the research direction, giving students considerable ownership over their academic path.
What is the MTech Coursework Track at IIT Gandhinagar, and is it different from the regular MTech?
Yes, it is a separate and distinct track. The MTech Coursework Track is designed for students who want to pursue non-research careers and seek stronger skills and knowledge. The curriculum is built around interdisciplinary skills, allowing students to learn from courses offered by their parent department as well as from several courses across other departments. Unlike the regular MTech, which requires 32 to 48 credits of thesis work, the Coursework Track carries a reduced thesis component and a heavier course load. Notably, a GATE score is not required to apply for the MTech Coursework Track. Students on this track are also eligible for international double degree programmes, where the student spends part of the time, typically one year, at IIT Gandhinagar and the remaining time at the partner institution abroad, after which degrees from each institution are awarded.
What is the credit and thesis requirement for the regular MTech at IIT Gandhinagar?
The MTech programme at IIT Gandhinagar consists of both coursework and a project or thesis. Students are required to complete 32 to 48 credits of coursework, 32 to 48 credits of thesis, and 2 credits of the mandatory postgraduate orientation programme called 'Aarohan'. The thesis component is designed to train students in independent thinking and the integration of knowledge toward solving R&D problems. Students have considerable flexibility in designing their academic path and can carry out their research even outside their immediate discipline or in industry. Additionally, all MTech students must complete two physical education courses, one each in their first two semesters, graded on a pass/no-pass basis.

IIT Gandhinagar MSc 2026 FAQs

How is the MSc programme at IIT Gandhinagar different from a conventional MSc degree?
The MSc programme at IITGN is designed to carve out a different niche from the large number of MSc offerings in India. It enables students to acquire both breadth and depth in their areas of study, orients them toward scientific research, exposes them to areas beyond their core subjects, and includes mandatory curriculum components from humanities and social sciences. This means even an MSc student in mathematics or physics will have structured exposure to the humanities, consistent with the institute's interdisciplinary philosophy. The MSc programme places a strong emphasis on both coursework and a compulsory research project. It is expected that the thesis project will result in high-quality scholarly publications and presentations at national and international conferences. The institute also provides travel scholarships of up to INR 60,000 for MSc students to present their work at conferences.
Is there an Early Admit MSc track at IIT Gandhinagar, and who qualifies?
Yes. IIT Gandhinagar offers an Early Admit MSc in three specialisations, with admission based on a written test or interview and the student's past academic scores. BSc and BTech students from select colleges and NITs who will graduate in the current academic year and are among the top five rank holders in their departments at the end of their pre-final or final year are eligible to apply. This track, similar in spirit to the Early Admit MTech, is designed to give high-performing students from top institutions a direct pathway into the MSc programme without waiting for the standard JAM-based admission cycle. Students admitted through this route join the same programme and curriculum as regularly admitted MSc students.
What is the MSc Cognitive Science programme at IIT Gandhinagar, and who is it open to?
The MSc in Cognitive Science is a two-year, four-semester full-time programme. IIT Gandhinagar currently offers 26 minor programmes that any BTech student can opt into by completing additional relevant courses. These include engineering-domain minors such as artificial intelligence, robotics, quantum technologies, biomedical engineering, and integrated circuit design & technology, as well as interdisciplinary minors like data analytics, management, design, earth sciences, archaeological sciences, cognitive science, and sustainable development. A student in mechanical engineering, for instance, can simultaneously complete a minor in computer science & engineering and a minor in management. Minors are completed within the 4-year BTech without needing to extend the programme in most cases.

Dear student,

In most cases, shortlist & selection in the final merit list is a combination of marks and category for M.Sc in Cognitive Science at IIT Gandhinagar. If you have a Caste Certificate and had applied under this quota while filling the forms, then you final selection will be basis both. With a reserved category certificate, chances of getting admission may go up as there might be fewer contenders against whom you'll be competing.

JoSAA eligibility requires 2025 requires a passing grade in all the subjects in your Class 12 (or equivalent) examination. While the 75% (or 65%) criterion is important for the general/reserved category eligibility, it's also important that you pass all the subjects in your Class 12. If you have further queries regarding Engineering course admission, you can write to hello@collegedekho.com or call our toll free number 18005729877, or simply fill out our Common Application Form on the website.

The results of any free IIT JAM mock test you attempted will usually be accessible on the same website or platform where you took the test. You can check your results by doing the following:

  • Check the platform or website:

Return to the website where the mock exam was held if it was one of such sites (such as the platform of a coaching centre or an educational website). Use the login information you used to register to access your account, if you have one. Look for a section that says "My Results," "Test History," or "Dashboard," since these might include your mock test results and feedback.

  • Instant Results:

Results from a lot of free practice exams are available right away. If so, see if your score appeared on the platform immediately after you finished the test.

  • Notification via Email:

After you finish the test, some platforms send you an email with your findings. Look for any correspondence on the outcomes of your practice exam in your inbox (and spam folder).

  • Speak with Support:

You can get in touch with the helpdesk or support staff of the website or platform where you took the test if you are unable to locate your results. They ought to be able to help you find your score.

Please let me know if you need help with anything else regarding to the IIT JAM mock test!
