IIT Gandhinagar Scholarship Overview

IIT Gandhinagar scholarships are administered by the Senate Scholarship and Prize Committee (SSPC). The financial aid of IIT Gandhinagar falls into three channels: scholarships instituted by the institute (merit- and means-based), scholarships instituted by donors, and government-funded schemes, including GATE stipends, JRF/SRF fellowships, and the AICTE Pragati Scholarship. Awards are announced at the beginning of each academic year after SSPC interviews and document verification. First-year UG students are exempt from the CPI requirement, and all continuing students must meet the CPI threshold specified for their scheme to retain the award.

IIT Gandhinagar Scholarships for BTech Students

IIT Gandhinagar BTech scholarship covers students in both the BTech programme and the BTech+MTech dual degree programme, as admission to the dual degree is also through JEE Advanced and JoSAA counselling. The IIT Gandhinagar BTech scholarship framework has three institute-level streams: the MCM scholarship IIT Gandhinagar (means-based), the Freeship (need-based), and the Excellence scholarships (merit-based).

IIT Gandhinagar BTech Scholarship Eligibility:

  • MCM: A minimum CPI of 6.5 is required from the 2nd year onwards. The 1st year is exempted from this requirement. The annual family income must not exceed INR 450,000. The MCM scholarship is awarded to up to 25% of enrolled BTech students in each academic year.
  • Freeship: A minimum CPI of 6.5 is required for students belonging to the General or OBC category. The cases are assessed by the SSPC based on financial hardship. The scheme supports an additional 10% of students who are not selected under the MCM scholarship.
  • SC/ST Scholarship IIT Gandhinagar (Messing Allowance): SC/ST students with a family income of up to INR 450,000 with no minimum CPI are eligible. The SC/ST students also benefit from the available tuition fee waivers applicable to the  IIT Gandhinagar fees for SC students.
  • Tata Motors Ltd Financial Aid Programme: A minimum CPI of 6.0 and family income up to INR 650,000 for the students from the non-metro cities or INR 750,000 for the students from the metro cities are required. The amount is repayable after financial independence and is available to all categories.
  • Excellence scholarships: no income requirement and selected by SSPC based on CPI rank (academic excellence) or co-curricular nomination (sports, arts, or leadership); open to 2nd, 3rd, and 4th-year students only.

Merit-based Scholarships for IIT Gandhinagar BTech Students

IIT Gandhinagar merit-based BTech scholarship is determined separately per discipline. Toppers from every BTech discipline receive the Academic Excellence award independently for their discipline. No income proof is required for any merit award. The SSPC selects academic excellence awardees automatically from end-of-year CPI rankings. Sports, arts, and leadership awardees go through a nomination and interview process.

  • Academic Excellence: 1 award per discipline each year is offered to the student with the highest CPI in that discipline. In the case of a tie, the Senate Scholarship and Prize Committee decides by reviewing the complete academic record.
  • Sports and Games: 6 awards across the institute. 2nd- to 4th-year students nominate themselves, and SSPC shortlists based on verified achievements at the national or inter-IIT level.
  • Arts and Culture: 2 awards are provided to the students with documented performances in music, dance, visual arts, or theatre. A portfolio or certificate of participation is required.
  • Social Work and Leadership: 2 awards are given to the eligible students. The applicants must submit evidence of community outreach, institute-level leadership roles, or social initiatives undertaken during the academic year.
  • Erach and Meheroo Mehta Merit Scholarship: The donor-funded merit award is open to BTech students. The specific CPI threshold and programme eligibility are defined by donor terms and announced by SSPC annually.

Means-based Scholarships for IIT Gandhinagar BTech Students

IIT Gandhinagar requires the applicants to appear for an SSPC interview where the committee verifies income certificates and assesses financial need for the means-based scholarships, such as MCM, Freeship, and the Tata Motors Ltd Financial Aid Programme. The IIT Gandhinagar MCM scholarship, also known as the Merit-cum-Means scholarship, is the most widely accessed of these awards. For Freeship, if the CPI falls below 6.5 mid-year, the committee restricts the fee waiver to the current semester and requires a re-interview before approving the next semester.

  • SSPC Interview Review: The committee checks the income certificate, latest CPI record, and caste certificates for SC/ST/OBC applicants against declared family details
  • TML-FAP Self-declaration: The student signs a declaration agreeing to repay the aid once financially independent, with no fixed repayment schedule is imposed at the point of receiving the aid
  • TML-FAP Metro Classification: The annual family income for students from the non-metro cities must not cross INR 650,000, while for students from the metro cities, the annual family income limit is INR 750,000. The residential address is verified via the permanent address of the students during admission.
  • SC/ST Messing Allowance: It is processed directly by the academic office on submission of caste certificate and income proof with no SSPC interview required

IIT Gandhinagar Scholarships for BTech Students FAQs

Are category-based scholarships at IIT Gandhinagar automatically granted after admission?
No, category-based scholarships at IIT Gandhinagar are not automatically granted after admission. The only exception is the SC/ST Free Basic Messing and Pocket Allowance, which is processed directly by the academic office on submission of caste certificate and income proof, with no SSPC interview required. All other category-based awards, including MCM and TML-FAP, require students to apply through the IITGN student portal and attend an SSPC interview. Students must submit the required documents within the announced application window to be considered for any scholarship.
Can PwD students receive scholarships in addition to their category-based schemes at IIT Gandhinagar?
Yes, PwD students at IIT Gandhinagar can receive scholarships in addition to their category-based schemes, provided they meet the eligibility conditions for each award independently. A PwD student from the SC or ST category can access both the SC/ST messing allowance and other applicable need-based schemes. A disability certificate is required for PwD applicants, and the SSPC interview is mandatory for most awards. Students are advised to declare their disability status at the time of application to ensure all applicable schemes are considered during assessment.
Why does IIT Gandhinagar conduct interviews for means-based scholarships?
IIT Gandhinagar conducts SSPC interviews for means-based scholarships to verify the financial information declared by students in their applications. Income certificates, caste documents, and family details are cross-checked during the interview to ensure that awards reach students with genuine financial need. The interview also allows the committee to assess cases where income documentation may be inconsistent or incomplete. This process maintains the integrity of the scholarship programme and ensures that limited funds are allocated fairly across eligible students from all programmes and categories.
Do IIT Gandhinagar merit scholarships recognise achievements outside academics?
Yes, IIT Gandhinagar merit scholarships recognise achievements outside academics through the Excellence scholarship category. In addition to the Academic Excellence award based on CPI ranking, the institute offers Sports and Games awards for six students with verified national or inter-IIT achievements, Arts and Culture awards for two students with documented performances, and Social Work and Leadership awards for two students with evidence of community outreach or institute-level leadership. All these awards provide INR 2,000 per month for 10 months and are open to second, third, and fourth-year BTech students.
Can BTech+MTech dual-degree students apply for the same scholarships as regular BTech students at IIT Gandhinagar?
Yes, BTech+MTech dual-degree students at IIT Gandhinagar are eligible for the same scholarships as regular BTech students. Since admission to the dual degree programme is also through JEE Advanced and JoSAA counselling, dual-degree students fall within the same scholarship framework. This includes MCM, Freeship, TML-FAP, SC/ST messing allowance, excellence awards, and all donor scholarships listed for BTech and BTech+MTech students. The eligibility conditions for CPI and annual family income remain the same for both regular BTech and dual-degree students.

IIT Gandhinagar Scholarships for the PG Students

Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar PG scholarship varies by programme. The IITGN MTech scholarship is the GATE stipend. MSc and MA students are not entitled to this stipend but can apply for MCM, freeship, and donor scholarships. PGDIIT students are explicitly excluded from the monthly government stipend.

IIT Gandhinagar PG Scholarship conditions:

  • Academic Excellence for MSc/MA: 1 award per discipline is available under the academic excellence scholarship. The student with the highest CPI in their MSc or MA discipline is selected. Eligibility and amount follow the same rules as the UG Academic Excellence Award.

IIT Gandhinagar Scholarships for the PG Students FAQs

Do international PG students receive need-based scholarships at IIT Gandhinagar?
The IIT Gandhinagar scholarship framework as described in official sources primarily covers Indian nationals and OCI cardholders. The IITGN Fellowship for postdoctoral researchers is explicitly open to Indian citizens and OCI cardholders only. Need-based schemes such as MCM and Freeship require income certificates issued by Indian government authorities, which international students would generally not hold. International PG students seeking financial support are advised to contact the IIT Gandhinagar international relations or admissions office directly to understand what funding options may be available to them.
Can IIT Gandhinagar PG students receive both merit and need-based scholarships?
Yes, IIT Gandhinagar PG students can receive both merit and need-based scholarships, provided they meet the eligibility conditions for each independently. An MSc or MA student who holds the Academic Excellence award and also qualifies for MCM based on CPI and family income can receive both awards simultaneously. However, MTech students receiving the GATE stipend are not eligible for MCM or Freeship, as the stipend is treated as the primary financial support for that programme. Students should confirm their specific eligibility with the SSPC before applying for multiple schemes.
Do IIT Gandhinagar merit scholarships for the PG students require a separate exam?
No, IIT Gandhinagar merit scholarships for PG students do not require a separate examination. The Academic Excellence award for MSc and MA students is determined automatically based on discipline-wise CPI rankings at the end of the preceding academic year. The student with the highest CPI in their discipline receives the award with no additional test or application required. MTech students admitted through GATE are not separately eligible for institute merit scholarships, as the GATE score itself is treated as recognition of merit and the stipend follows automatically.
Do IIT Gandhinagar PG scholarships support research activities?
Yes, IIT Gandhinagar PG scholarships support research activities through specific grants. Full-time MTech students can apply for a conference travel grant of up to INR 60,000 per approved conference, provided they have an accepted paper at a peer-reviewed international conference and written endorsement from their supervisor. PhD scholars receive the Atlas Research Travel Grant for presenting work at conferences within India. These grants are approved by the SSPC on a case-by-case basis and are separate from the regular monthly stipend or scholarship received by the student.
Are IIT Gandhinagar PG scholarships available to part-time students?
PGDIIT students, who follow a part-time format, are explicitly excluded from the government stipend at IIT Gandhinagar. However, PGDIIT students enrolled as full-time students who meet CPI and income conditions may apply for need-based schemes. Full-time MTech students admitted through GATE receive the government stipend automatically. MSc and MA students, whether full-time or part-time, must check their eligibility with the SSPC, as the framework primarily covers full-time enrolment. Part-time PG students are advised to contact the scholarship office directly to confirm which schemes they can access.

IIT Gandhinagar PhD Scholarship and Fellowship 2026

IIT Gandhinagar PhD scholarship and fellowship support are structured in 3 tiers: JRF for the first two years, SRF from the third year subject to appraisal, and the IITGN Fellowship for postdoctoral and exceptional early-career researchers. • SRF requires successful completion of the doctoral committee appraisal at the end of the 2nd year. Students who do not pass the appraisal continue on JRF until the appraisal is cleared.
  • IITGN Fellowship is open to Indian citizens and OCI cardholders only. Candidates must have a PhD from a recognised university and demonstrate an outstanding research record. The grant is for conference travel, workshops, and training.
  • ARTG is available per approved trip. The student must provide conference details and a cost estimate, and the grant is disbursed after SSPC approval.
  • Start Early PhD Fellowship is particularly for the final-year BTech/BS students from IITs/IISc (minimum CPI 6.0) or NITs/IISERs (minimum CPI 8.0). IIT Gandhinagar Scholarships for Female Students 2026

IIT Gandhinagar scholarships for female students cover all institute, donor, and government channels on equal terms. The AICTE Pragati Scholarship at IITGN is the most significant external scheme available exclusively to female UG students. The one exclusive award is the Vegshakti Mahila Kalyan Sangathan (VMKS) Scholarship, a donor-funded award for female students only at IIT Gandhinagar. Female students in the BTech and BTech+MTech programmes are additionally eligible for the AICTE Pragati Scholarship at IIT Gandhinagar, a central government scheme administered through the National Scholarship Portal.

Exclusive and priority schemes for female students:

  • VMKS Scholarship: Selection criteria and amount are defined by the donor and announced annually by SSPC. The application is submitted through the IITGN student portal along with other institute scholarship applications.
  • AICTE Pragati Scholarship: The Pragati Scholarship must be applied for through the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) separately from the institute portal. The application window typically opens between July and October each year.
  • SC/ST female students are eligible for the messing allowance and full tuition fee waiver under the same conditions as all SC/ST students and are processed through the academic office on submission of category and income documents.

  • AICTE Pragati renewal: students who do not meet the 60% threshold in a given year must reapply through NSP in the next cycle once they meet the required score. The scholarship does not continue automatically.
  • PhD female scholars are eligible for JRF, SRF, and IITGN Fellowship on equal terms with all other PhD students with no gender-based differentiation in PhD financial support.

Need-based Scholarships for IIT Gandhinagar Female Students

IIT Gandhinagar need-based scholarships for female students are available through both the IITGN student portal and the National Scholarship Portal, depending on the scheme. The AICTE Pragati Annual Family Income Limit is higher than the standard MCM ceiling, which means female students who do not qualify for MCM may still be eligible for Pragati.

  • Holding MCM and AICTE Pragati together: A female student can hold both scholarships simultaneously, provided she meets the eligibility conditions for each independently. The two schemes are assessed by separate authorities.

IIT Gandhinagar Scholarships for Female Students FAQs

Can married female students at IIT Gandhinagar apply for need-based scholarships?
Yes, married female students at IIT Gandhinagar can apply for need-based scholarships. The eligibility conditions for MCM, Freeship, TML-FAP, and other need-based schemes are based on annual family income, CPI, and programme enrolment status. Marital status is not listed as a disqualifying condition in the official scholarship framework. However, a married student's family income assessment may include the spouse's income depending on how the income certificate is issued. Students in this situation are advised to discuss their specific circumstances with the SSPC during the interview.
Do IIT Gandhinagar female merit scholarships have separate academic rankings?
No, IIT Gandhinagar does not maintain separate academic rankings for female students when awarding merit scholarships. The Academic Excellence award is based on discipline-wise CPI rankings that include all students in a given discipline regardless of gender. The student with the highest CPI in each discipline receives the award. There is no gender-separated ranking pool for any merit-based scholarship at IIT Gandhinagar. Female students compete within the same academic ranking system as all other students and are equally eligible for all merit awards on that basis.
Can female students at IIT Gandhinagar receive both institute and government scholarships?
Yes, female students at IIT Gandhinagar can receive both institute scholarships and government scholarships simultaneously. A female BTech student can hold the MCM scholarship from the institute and the AICTE Pragati Scholarship from the central government at the same time, provided she meets the eligibility conditions for each independently. The MCM has an annual family income limit of INR 450,000, while the Pragati Scholarship allows up to INR 800,000, making it accessible to a wider group of female students who may not qualify for MCM.

IIT Gandhinagar Donor Scholarships 2026 FAQs

Are donor scholarships at IIT Gandhinagar limited to specific programmes?
Not all donor scholarships at IIT Gandhinagar are limited to specific programmes. Several awards, such as the Mahabir Prasad Sultania Scholarship, Durga Devi Sultania Scholarship, and Class-of-2015 and Class-of-2016 scholarships, are open to all BTech and BTech+MTech students meeting donor MCM criteria. However, some awards, such as the S.C. Mehrotra Scholarship and Niteen P. Sant Scholarship, are restricted to specific branches like Civil Engineering or Materials Science Engineering. Students should review the SSPC announcement each year to confirm which awards apply to their programme and year.
What is the interview format for the IIT Gandhinagar Chandrakant Desai Scholarship?
The Chandrakant and Patricia Desai Scholarship at IIT Gandhinagar follows the standard SSPC donor scholarship process. The interview is conducted by the Senate Scholarship and Prize Committee, which verifies the student's income documents, academic record, and financial need during a personal interview. The specific format, duration, and questions asked are determined by the SSPC for each cycle. Students shortlisted for this award will be informed through the student portal and institute email. Attendance at the interview is mandatory, and prior written approval is required for absence.
Does IIT Gandhinagar allow branch switches for the Niteen P. Sant Scholarship?
The Niteen P. Sant Scholarship at IIT Gandhinagar is specifically open to BTech and BTech+MTech students enrolled in Civil Engineering or Materials Science Engineering. If a student switches branch to a discipline outside these two, they would no longer meet the programme eligibility condition for this award. The scholarship would be withdrawn from the next disbursement cycle. Students considering a branch change are advised to check with the SSPC before proceeding, as the change may affect their eligibility for branch-specific donor scholarships.
Is there a sibling limit for the IIT Gandhinagar KDG Scholarship?
The official IIT Gandhinagar scholarship framework does not specify a sibling limit for the Kandoi-Dairkee-Gaurav scholarship. The KDG scholarship requires a minimum CPI of 6.0 for BTech and BTech+MTech students, with the award amount defined under donor terms announced by the SSPC annually. Any conditions related to siblings or family members would be disclosed during the SSPC scholarship cycle. Students interested in this award are advised to check the SSPC announcement at the start of the academic year or contact the scholarship office directly.

How to Apply for Scholarships at IIT Gandhinagar in 2026

IIT Gandhinagar application for scholarships involves certain processes. The IITGN scholarship application process for institute scholarships such as the MCM, Freeship, TML-FAP, and donor awards runs through the IITGN student portal at the start of each academic year. External schemes such as AICTE Pragati must be submitted through the National Scholarship Portal (NSP), with the application window typically open between July and October.

  1. Check eligibility: Confirm your programme, year of study, CPI at the end of the last semester, and annual family income before selecting a scholarship category.
  2. Register on the portal: Log in to the IITGN student portal using institute credentials and open the Scholarships section. New students receive login details at the time of admission.
  3. Select scholarship type: Choose the relevant scheme. A student may apply for more than one scheme in the same cycle if eligible for each independently.
  4. Fill the application: Enter income, academic, category, and bank details accurately. Errors in income or CPI data are grounds for disqualification.

Documents Required for IIT Gandhinagar Scholarship 2026 FAQs

Does IIT Gandhinagar verify all the documents before approving any scholarship?
Yes, all documents submitted for an IIT Gandhinagar scholarship are verified by the SSPC before the award is approved. The committee reviews income certificates, CPI records, caste documents, and bank details during the portal review stage and again during the SSPC interview. Where income documents appear inconsistent, the committee may contact the issuing authority or request a fresh certificate. Submission of forged or false documents leads to immediate cancellation of the scholarship, disqualification from future applications, and referral for disciplinary action under institute rules.
Do students need to update documents every year for IIT Gandhinagar scholarship renewals?
Yes, students must submit updated documents every year during the IIT Gandhinagar scholarship renewal process. The income certificate must be dated within 12 months of the application, which means a fresh certificate is required each year. The latest CPI certificate or marksheet from the IIT Gandhinagar academic office must also be submitted to confirm continued academic eligibility. Caste certificates, once submitted, may not need annual resubmission, but students should confirm this with the SSPC. All documents must be reuploaded through the student portal during the renewal application window.
What happens if a student submits incomplete documents for an IIT Gandhinagar scholarship?
If a student submits incomplete documents for an IIT Gandhinagar scholarship, the application is not accepted by the SSPC. Incomplete uploads are a ground for rejection during the portal review stage. The student will not be called for the SSPC interview if mandatory documents are missing. Since the scholarship application window is fixed and late submissions are not accepted, an incomplete application means the student must wait for the next annual cycle to reapply. Students are strongly advised to prepare and verify all documents before the portal submission deadline.
Can IIT Gandhinagar students submit scholarship documents in digital format?
Yes, IIT Gandhinagar scholarship documents are submitted through the IITGN student portal in digital format. Students are required to upload scanned copies of all required documents, including income certificates, caste certificates, CPI marksheets, Aadhaar cards, and bank account details, in the formats specified by the portal. Documents must be self-attested unless the portal specifies otherwise. Incomplete or incorrectly formatted uploads are not accepted and may result in the application being rejected for that cycle. Students should ensure all files are legible and within the size limits set by the portal

IIT Gandhinagar Scholarship Verification Process 2026

IIT Gandhinagar scholarship verification process in 2026 begins after the portal submission window closes. The SSPC reviews all applications in batches and calls shortlisted candidates for interviews, typically within the first six weeks of the academic year.

  • Portal review: SSPC checks that all mandatory documents are uploaded and that income and CPI details match the supporting records.
  • SSPC interview: shortlisted students appear in person. The committee verifies financial need, academic standing, and the authenticity of income certificates.
  • Background check: where income documents appear inconsistent, the committee may contact the issuing authority or request a fresh certificate.
  • Freeship interim award: if verification cannot be completed before the fee due date, a provisional one-semester waiver may be issued pending final review.
  • MTech GATE stipend and PhD JRF/SRF: processed directly by the academic and finance office with no SSPC interview required.
  • Notification: Final decisions are communicated through the student portal. Rejected applications include a brief reason to allow reapplication in the next cycle.

IIT Gandhinagar Scholarship Renewal and Continuation Policy 2026

IIT Gandhinagar scholarship renewal takes place at the start of every academic year. The IIT Gandhinagar scholarship income limit is checked again at renewal. If a family's income has risen above the ceiling, the award is withdrawn from the next disbursement. Scholarship renewal at IITGN is not automatic. Most awards are valid for 1 year only. Students must reapply through the SSPC processes each year. Awards may be continued, reduced, or withdrawn based on academic performance, attendance, conduct, and changes in family income.

IIT Gandhinagar Minimum Performance Requirements

  • MCM, Freeship, and standard donor MCM scholarships require a minimum CPI at the end of the preceding year because these awards are designed to support students who remain academically active. A student who is no longer making satisfactory progress is considered to have changed financial circumstances relative to their educational output
  • Tata Motors Ltd. Financial Aid Programme has a lower CPI threshold than MCM because it was designed to assist a wider group of students, including those who are strong in areas outside academics
  • Excellence scholarships are not renewed. They are re-awarded each year based on fresh performance, so there is no CPI floor for co-curricular awards
  • First-year students are exempt from the CPI condition in all need-based schemes because no institute CPI record exists at the point of their first application

IIT Gandhinagar Attendance and Conduct Rules

  • Satisfactory attendance means meeting the minimum attendance percentage prescribed in the institute's academic rules for each registered course. The academic office provides the exact threshold at the start of each semester.
  • Academic probation is triggered when a student's CPI or semester performance falls below the institute's minimum passing threshold. No scholarship disbursement is made to a student on probation until the probation is formally lifted.
  • A pending disciplinary case suspends scholarship disbursement for the period of the investigation. If the student is cleared, the withheld amount for that period is reinstated.
  • TML-FAP recipients are expected to co-operate with any income or usage monitoring by the SSPC. Failure to respond to a monitoring request may result in suspension of the next scheduled instalment.

IIT Gandhinagar Scholarship Discontinuation Conditions

  • Submission of forged income certificates or false declarations leads to immediate cancellation with no right to reapply. The matter is referred for disciplinary action under institute rules.
  • Failure to attend the SSPC renewal interview without prior written approval disqualifies the student for that academic cycle. The scholarship does not carry over to the next year.
  • Scholarships cannot be transferred to a different student, a different academic year, or a different programme. Any unused portion lapses at the end of the award period.

Dear student,

In most cases, shortlist & selection in the final merit list is a combination of marks and category for M.Sc in Cognitive Science at IIT Gandhinagar. If you have a Caste Certificate and had applied under this quota while filling the forms, then you final selection will be basis both. With a reserved category certificate, chances of getting admission may go up as there might be fewer contenders against whom you'll be competing.

IIT Gandhinagar Scholarship FAQs

How does part-time job income affect IIT Gandhinagar free basic messing eligibility?

The IIT Gandhinagar SC/ST Free Basic Messing eligibility is assessed on the basis of annual family income, which must not exceed INR 450,000. If a student earns income through a part-time job and this is reflected in the family's declared income, it could affect the total income figure used during verification. Students are advised to declare all sources of income accurately when submitting documents to the academic office. Misrepresentation of income details can lead to cancellation of the award and disciplinary action under institute rules.

Is messing proof required for renewing IIT Gandhinagar free basic messing?

The IIT Gandhinagar SC/ST Free Basic Messing and Pocket Allowance is processed through the academic office on submission of the caste certificate and income proof. At renewal, students are required to resubmit updated documents confirming that their family income continues to remain within the INR 450,000 annual limit. While the official framework does not separately list messing proof as a renewal document, students are advised to check with the academic office at the start of each academic year for any updated document requirements specific to the renewal cycle.

Can IIT Gandhinagar carry over sports excellence eligibility for an injury year?

The IIT Gandhinagar Sports and Games Excellence scholarship is re-awarded each year based on fresh nominations and verified achievements. There is no provision mentioned in the official scholarship framework for carrying over eligibility from a previous year due to injury. Students who were unable to participate in sports activities during a year due to injury would need to reapply in the following year with documented achievements from that cycle. Students facing such circumstances are advised to contact the SSPC directly to understand their options.

How does IIT Gandhinagar evaluate progress for PhD fellowship continuation?

IIT Gandhinagar evaluates PhD fellowship continuation through a doctoral committee appraisal conducted at the end of the second year of the programme. Students who clear this appraisal are upgraded from JRF at INR 37,000 per month to SRF at INR 42,000 per month. Students who do not clear the appraisal continue on the JRF stipend until the appraisal is successfully completed. The appraisal assesses research progress, coursework completion, and the doctoral committee's recommendation before approving the transition to the next fellowship tier.

Are IIT Gandhinagar scholarship amounts taxable?

Scholarships received by students for the purpose of education are generally exempt from income tax under Section 10(16) of the Income Tax Act in India. This applies to institute scholarships such as MCM, donor awards, and government stipends such as the GATE stipend and PhD JRF or SRF fellowships at IIT Gandhinagar. However, tax rules are subject to change, and individual circumstances may vary. Students are advised to consult a qualified tax professional if they are uncertain about the tax treatment of any specific award they receive.

Are education loans included in the income calculation for the IIT Gandhinagar MCM scholarship?

Education loans are not treated as family income for the purpose of the IIT Gandhinagar MCM scholarship eligibility assessment. The income calculation is based on the annual family income declared in the income certificate issued by a gazetted officer or tehsildar. A loan is a liability and not an earning, so it does not factor into the income ceiling of INR 450,000 per year. Students availing education loans can still apply for MCM if their family income otherwise meets the prescribed limit.

Does receiving scholarships for siblings affect eligibility for the IIT Gandhinagar MCM scholarship?

The IIT Gandhinagar MCM scholarship eligibility is assessed on the basis of the total annual family income declared in the income certificate. If a sibling's scholarship is treated as income in the family's financial records, it may affect the declared income figure used during SSPC verification. However, scholarships received by siblings are generally not counted as family income under standard assessment norms. Students are advised to clarify this directly with the SSPC during the interview to avoid any discrepancy in their application.

Can I postpone the IIT Gandhinagar MCM scholarship if I am unable to join?

No, the IIT Gandhinagar MCM scholarship cannot be postponed to a future academic year. The award is tied to the current academic cycle and is valid only for the year in which it is granted. If a student is unable to join or defers admission, the scholarship does not carry forward. Students who rejoin in the following year must apply fresh through the SSPC process, meeting all eligibility conditions, including CPI and annual family income at the time of the new application.

Can I apply for an IIT Gandhinagar scholarship after the last date?

IIT Gandhinagar does not accept late scholarship applications through the student portal after the SSPC-announced deadline. The submission window is fixed for each academic year and aligned with the fee payment schedule. Students who miss the deadline must wait for the next annual cycle to apply. For external schemes such as AICTE Pragati, the deadline is set by the National Scholarship Portal and is also fixed. Students are advised to monitor the institute notice board and official email communications for deadline announcements each year.

How can I get a 100% free scholarship at IIT Gandhinagar?

An IIT Gandhinagar free scholarship in the form of a full tuition fee waiver is available through two main routes. Students with an annual family income below INR 250,000 receive a 100% tuition fee waiver under central government norms, effectively making their IIT scholarship cost-free on the tuition front. Students with income between INR 250,000 and INR 500,000 receive a two-thirds waiver. MCM scholarship recipients with income below INR 450,000 also receive a full annual tuition fee waiver along with the monthly stipend. SC/ST students with income below INR 450,000 receive a full waiver regardless of CPI. To maximise chances of receiving a full waiver, students should apply in the first week of the application window, ensure income certificates are obtained from a gazetted officer, and prepare for the SSPC interview with all supporting documents.
