National Institute of Technology, Manipur was established in 2010 with an aim to provide the best amenities and infrastructure to the students in the field of Science and Engineering. Located in Langol, Imphal NIT Manipur had a very modest beginning with only three Engineering branches. When the institute first embarked on its journey from the Takyelpat Campus, the three branches of Engineering which were offered are Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and Engineering at Government Polytechnic. Currently operating from its permanent campus in Langol, Imphal which is 341.5 acres of lush green land, NIT Manipur included two more branches of Engineering, that is Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering in 2014.
National Institute of Technology, Manipur is directly supervised by the Board of Governors from Manipur Societies Registration Act 1989. The Director of NIT Manipur is answerable to the Chairman of Board of Governors which lends transparency to its functioning.
NIT Manipur currently offers five courses under its Undergraduate programme and nine courses under the Postgraduate programme. Applicants from Manipur and from all over India are admitted in NIT Manipur through Common Engineering Entrance Exam (CEEE) or Joint Entrance Examination (JEE). The Ministry of Human Resource & Development conferred Deemed University status to NIT Manipur during its inception in 2010.
National Institute of Technology, Manipur is all set for an infrastructural revamp in the coming months to match the standards of an International Institute. Well equipped library, laboratories, computer centres with state-of-art facilities constitutes the major development programmes initiated by the Institute. NIT Manipur has also started the construction of the temporary academic and administrative building at the permanent campus location. With its Direct Admission of Students Abroad (DASA) programme, NIT Manipur’s quest to become a Global Institute has received a massive boost.
Presently, NIT Manipur has an intake capacity of roughly 150 students per year across various courses out of which half of the seats are reserved for students belonging to Manipur. Students from all over the country can apply for the remaining 50% of the total seats in NIT Manipur.
Students of NIT Manipur have access to all the basic infrastructural facilities such as computer laboratory, centralised library, upgraded laboratories with the latest equipment, workshops and many more. The college campus is connected to high-speed internet connectivity and provides several in-campus facilities such as a medical unit, hostel facilities, banking and post office facilities.
