National Law University and Judicial Academy - NLUJA
The North-Eastern region of India has traditionally been one of the underdeveloped and marginalized areas of the Indian nation. Despite the presence of a High Court for the eight ‘Seven Sister’ states, viz., Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura in Guwahati; the scenario of legal education in the area remained far from the potential of possible proliferation of excellence in the realm of legal profession. Thus, to fulfill the aspirations of the people, the Government of Assam decided to initiate and facilitate the establishment of a Law University in Assam. This lead to the establishment of The National Law University and Judicial Academy(NLUJAA), Assam by the Government of Assam by way of passing the National Law School and Judicial Academy, Assam Act, 2009(Act No.XXV of 2009). This Act was later amended as the National Law University and Judicial Academy, Assam (Amendment) Act, 2011 (Act II of 2012), wherein the word ‘School’ was replaced by the word ‘University’. The NLUJAA is the youngest member in the family of the 14 (fourteen) National Law Universities established across the country. It offers the B.A.,LL.B.(Hons.) Five Year Integrated Course and LL.M. One Year Course. The Hon’ble Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court is the Chancellor of this University. Its present address is the state-of-the-art North Eastern Judicial Officer’s Training Institute (NEJOTI) building at Ulubari, in the heart of the Guwahati city. The permanent high tech campus of the Law University is coming up at Agiyathuri, Amingaon on the northern bank of the Brahmaputra river. Set amidst the lush greenery, it has a sprawling campus area that covers 21 acres, with the area likely to be increased to 47 acres in the near future. The Law University is modeled on the lines of NLSIU, Banglore which has set new benchmarks of excellence in India and abroad in different aspects of the legal profession. Since its inception, in September 2011, NLUA has been making small but steady steps in its Pursuit of Excellence which is our motto. Its pupils have to pass through a rigorous screening process known as the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) which selects students for all the national law schools in the country . The Law University receives liberal grants from the Government of Assam and infrastructural support from the Government of India. In its mere one and a half years of existence, it has managed to get the recognition from the Bar Council of India. To add another feather to its beret, NLUA has been registered with the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(F) of the University Grant Commission Act, 1956.It has also received temporary approved affiliation from the Bar Council of India, New Delhi. Professional membership to the Association of India Universities, New Delhi has also been granted to this University which consolidates the formal establishment of the brand name NLUA. The Law University is also the proud member of a number of International academic institutions and associations from across the world viz.
