IIT Dharwad has its own placement cell known as the Career Development Cell (CDC). IIT Dharwad placement cell is responsible for carrying out the placement and internship processes. It began its operation in 2020. Apart from conducting the placement drive, the CDC organises events placement talk series and pre-placement training programmes to make students familiar with the industry-institute relationships.

IIT Dharwad placement cell takes care of the placements through a tier-based system based on the gross pay offered by the company. There are a total of seven tiers and an open tier. However, public sector units, Indian ministries, government undertakings and armed forces units do not fall into any of the classified tiers.

IIT Dharwad final year students must follow certain rules and regulations when applying for placement through the CDC Placement Wing:

• Students must compulsorily register for placement by signing an undertaking with the CDC Placement Wing. Those who did not register will not be allowed to participate in the IIT Dharwad campus recruitment process. The registration will be valid for only one academic year.
• A student can take a maximum of two offers through the Career Development Cell. In case a student receives an offer through the CDC from PSUs, government undertakings, ministries and Indian Armed Forces, he/she will be de-registered from the CDC. However, if a student receives his/her first offer from companies mentioned in the tiers, let's say tier 3,  he/she is eligible to take an offer from PSU from the subsequent tiers which are tier 4, tier 5, tier 6, tier 7 and open tier.
• In case of pre-placement offers, the PPO received by the student at the time of internship will be considered as the first offer. The student will be eligible for a second offer from any company in a tier above the one received at the time of internship.
