IIT Kharagpur has set up special recharge zones to reduce placement stress for students. These spaces help students relax, stay calm, and manage pressure during interviews.
IIT Kharagpur Rolls Out New Initiative to Tackle Placement Stress among StudentsIIT Kharagpur New Initiative: The IIT Kharagpur has introduced a unique concept of “ recharge zones ” to help students manage stress during the placement season. These zones were introduced in response to increasing anxiety among students, particularly during interviews and selection processes. The campus is notorious for its long placement days, continuously escalating expectations, and unwavering stress that makes students mentally exhausted. The institute felt it needed to create a place for students to temporarily escape the pressure and get their focus back.
These
recharge zones are operational 24×7
and
have several relaxation options
, including creative corners, meditation zones, stress-relief activities and quiet seating areas. Students can doodle, write, meditate, listen to tranquil music or just sit and breathe. There are also games, stress balls and light physical exercises designed to help students release nervous energy. The objective is to give students a momentary mental time-out before sending them off to a few more interviews.

The faculty and administration said the initiative is an example of IIT Kharagpur's increasing attention to mental health. The institute has been increasing its counselling support and adding wellness programmes all year long. As more students share their stress and anxiety with the world, the institute sought to foster a culture in which breaks from studying and other normal, healthy behaviours and not signs of study weakness. "The recharge" stations are designed to remind students to pause, take care of themselves and return stronger.
Students who have visited the recharge zones say those areas help calm their nerves and build confidence as the placement season is underway. It helps that the institute is recognising the emotional challenges they go through. While the zones don’t take away all the stress, but provide some much-needed breathing room in a tough time. This move is also an indicator that mental well-being is gaining relevance in the academic space in India’s premier institutions.
