Panjab University (PU)’s position has dropped in Netherlands-based Leiden University Rankings 2017 in the category of the proportion of research papers among the top 10 percent most frequently cited for any institute. The rankings released on May 17 placed PU at 9th rank bringing it down from the 4th rank.

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi bagged the top position in the list, followed by IIT Roorkee and Annamalai University. The Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) were placed 19 and 20 respectively on the list.

Procedure of Rankings:

The rankings were based on the research papers cited from the year 2012 till 2015 in the web of science database among the 902 institutions around the world.

Fractional counting was used for this purpose according to which, collaborative publications were given less weightage than the non-collaborative ones. The citations until the end of the year 2016 were included. Then, these were put together by the Centre for Science and Technology Studies at Leiden University in the Netherlands. The first ranking list was released in 2007.
