Health Ministry: Private Doctors to Teach As Visiting Faculties in India

As per the Union Minister of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the Centre with the MCI have approved the proposal of appointing private doctors to teach as visiting faculties. The step has been taken to improve the overall comprehensiveness and quality of medical education teaching.

Private Doctors As Visiting Faculties

A new provision has been made by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, where, qualified doctors can be appointed as “visiting faculty” at the medical colleges in India . In a statement made by the State Minister, Ashwini Kumar Choubey, with the approval from the Government of India and Medical Council of India will allow medical colleges to take the step.

The Minister stated that the provision has been made by the Government, in order to facilitate an improvement in the “comprehensiveness and quality” of medical education and teaching methodologies.

Further adding to the changes brought in by the government, The Union Minister also stated that the Board of Governors with prior approval from the Central Government had modified the “Minimum Qualifications for Teachers in Medical Institutions Regulations 1998.

While replying to Upper House members, TG Venkatesh and Dharmapuri Srinivas, Minister Choubey stated that the amendments to the Regulations had been made in order to allow and appoint private doctors to teach under “Visiting Faculty”, for different medical courses.

The Minister also mentioned that the additional visiting faculties will be allowed on top of the minimum requirement of faculty as specified under the Minimum Standard Requirements in Medical College for 50/100/150/200/250 MBBS Admissions Annually Regulations, 1999, as well as in the Postgraduate Medical Education Regulation, 2000. The amendments have been kept keeping in mind these regulations for the UG and PG teaching methodologies for clinical, pre-clinical and para-clinical education.
