Campus at a Glance

Gujarat Technological University is a popular academic and research institute in Ahmedabad that is approved by UGC, NBA & PCI. Established in 2007 by the Government of Gujarat, GTU is a state university with 486 affiliated colleges operating across Gujarat through six zones located in Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Vallabh Vidyanagar, Rajkot, Surat, and Bhuj.

Presently, GTU offers programs in various fields including engineering, architecture, management, pharmacy, and computer science. It has a considerable number of students, around 225,000, enrolled in its many diploma, undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs. The university claims to have 17,000+ faculty members across various affiliate colleges and departments, imparting knowledge to students and helping them make successful careers. However, there have been a few cases where faculty members have been found to not be qualified enough to teach their subjects.

Students have not really been happy with the way education being provided in the university. The syllabus is outdated, the exam schedule is mismanaged, and the way students are graded is not fair. But, this is not all!

Our Take:

Its current ranking under the Pharmacy category is certainly an achievement. However, considering its previous rankings, there is a great scope for improvement. Prominent departments like Management and Engineering need attention.

Gujarat Technological University Academia & Batch Size

GTU offers a variety of undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral, and postgraduate diploma courses across multiple specializations. To get admission to B.Tech, valid scores in JEE/GUJCET are required, while admission to MBA is based on CMAT/CAT scores. Students can also gain direct admission to other courses based on their academic performance. The batch size for MBA is limited to 60, while for B.E., it is up to 240 students. GTU boasts the largest international experience program in collaboration with universities from the US, Canada, China, and Germany, which allows them to hone their capabilities and skills from a global perspective.

Innovation Council and Research Week

At Gujarat Technological University, there is an Innovation Council that strives to train, develop and nurture young minds to innovate. Additionally, the university has initiated a special event called Research Week. During this event, experts from universities around the world evaluate dissertations presented by Master's and Doctoral Program students. GTU's Contributor Personality Development Program and Bridge Course offer vital skills and technical knowledge necessary for individual development and success in a competitive industry.

Scholarships

The university offers scholarship aid for academically talented but underprivileged students. While the university itself does not provide financial assistance, eligible students may apply for government-provided scholarships. These scholarships include the AICTE-PG Scholarship Scheme, UGC-PG Scholarship for single female students, UGC-PG Scholarship for university rank holders, UGC-PG Scholarship for professional courses pursued by SC/ST students, the National Scholarship Scheme, Merit-based Scholarship by Gujarat Technological University, and many more.

Our Take:

The academic facilities at GTU do sound good; however, according to some students, the quality of education is not at par. No matter how well one has studied for the exams, the grades do not seem reasonable. Moreover, most of the teachers and students don’t have a good command over the English language, which makes communication difficult for students from other states.

Gujarat Technological University Infrastructure

GTU has a good infrastructure with modern facilities like multimedia classrooms, libraries, computer labs, cafeteria, sports complex, auditorium, hostels, and more.

Classrooms

The classrooms at Gujarat Technological University are equipped with computers, projectors, whiteboards, and sound systems to enhance the learning experience. Additionally, air conditioning is available for the maximum comfort of students.

Computer Labs

The computer labs are well-equipped with numerous computer systems and reliable internet connectivity. Students can utilize the facility to work on research projects during extra sessions or after completing class sessions.

Library

GTU claims to have separate libraries for different departments having books on all topics, reference materials, research journals, and more.

Gujarat Technological University has an auditorium where many events take place regularly.

Cafeteria

The university has a cafeteria that allows students to socialize and hang out.

Hostel

There are two hostel buildings available at the University, one for boys and one for girls. Additionally, a staff quarter on the same premises accommodates female students. The rooms are spacious and equipped with the necessary amenities. You can find a mess and gym located on the ground floor of the hostels. Furthermore, there is 24/7 internet connectivity available for students staying at the hostels.

Parking

The university has a good parking space for both faculty and students.

The computer labs have good internet connection and free Wi-Fi is available in hostels, cafeteria, libraries, etc.

Our Take:

The overall infrastructure of Gujarat Technological University seems good as it has all the modern amenities and facilities. However, many students have complained about the lack of books in the libraries. Additionally, the hostel food is also not up to the standards, which often pushes back many aspirants every year.

Gujarat Technological University Internships & Placements

At Gujarat Technological University, there is a Training and Placement Cell that is dedicated to helping students find employment. The cell works year-round to connect students with potential employers, ensuring that they have the necessary skills and information to succeed in their chosen industry. To achieve this, the T&P cell arranges technical talks, seminars, and workshops led by industry experts and university faculty. It also invites companies to visit for campus placements and facilitates student visits to companies for selection.

As of now, the details for the GTU placement 2023 have not been released. However, the NIRF report for 2023 is now available. The report states that during the GTU placements in 2022, 18 BTech, 35 MTech, 81 MBA, and 34 MPharma students were placed. The median package offered to BTech and MTech students was INR 2.64 LPA and INR 2.33 LPA, respectively. The median package offered for MBA and MPharma courses was INR 5.7 LPA and INR 2.45 LPA, respectively.

Our Take:

The placement reports of GTU are good; however, the medium packages offered to students don’t seem impressive. Also, the number of students placed in BTech courses is quite low. During our research, we found that many graduates were not happy with the placements as good opportunities were not being offered by the college. Since GTU has over 450+ affiliate colleges, placements are highly dependent on the popularity and ranking of the college.

Gujarat Technological University Management/ Administration

GTU boasts 17,000+ faculty members who are well-qualified in their respective areas of study. However, we found that many teachers are not even well-versed in the subjects they are supposed to teach. For instance, a Computer Science professor does not have any knowledge of Java. Many students have complained about this issue, but the higher authorities have yet to take any action. 

During each semester, the university assigns 10 to 15 practicals that are expected to be completed. These practicals may be included in the practical examination. However, many students complained that the faculty was not knowledgeable enough and instead provided them with all of the necessary codes to copy into their lab books. Many students have also suggested that the answer sheet checking system is also not fair. Outdated syllabus is another big concern at the Gujarat Technological University. Also, the exam timelines are not properly managed which puts students under a lot of pressure.

Our Take:

A team of good faculty ensures quality education in an institute, but GTU seems to be lacking that. More emphasis should be placed on incorporating the best teachers who know about their subjects in-depth. The syllabus should be updated every year to meet the industry standard. Furthermore, exams should be conducted at proper timelines to avoid putting students under a lot of pressure.

Gujarat Technological University is located at Nr. Visat Three Roads, Visat – Gandhinagar Highway, Chandkheda, Ahmedabad. Since it is located in the main city, students can easily reach here. There are various hangout places outside the university where students can eat to skip their hostel food.

Gujarat Technological University has the potential to be a top-tier institution both at the state and national levels. However, it must prioritize providing high-quality education to its students instead of solely focusing on infrastructure upgrades. The faculty members appointed should be well-educated and help students make a successful career rather than just feeding them bookish knowledge.
