National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Shillong

Headquartered in New Delhi, the National Institute of Fashion Technology is an autonomous institute with excellent courses in Fashion, Design, Management, and Technology courses. Established in 1986, the institute became a statutory institution in 2006 by an Act of Parliament in India. With 17 campuses across India, the institute is a true pioneer in the fashion industry and fashion education. The institute has campuses in places like Bangalore, Bhopal, Chennai, Bhubaneswar, Gandhinagar, Hyderabad, Kangra, Jodhpur, Kannur, Mumbai, Kolkata, New Delhi, Patna, Panchkula, Shillong, Raebareli, and Srinagar. In addition, the institute has a campus in Shillong, which was established in June 2008. NIFT entrance exam is scheduled for February 05, 2023. 

The National Institute of Fashion Technology, Shillong, has a beautiful campus and eye-soothing view. It is one of the first fashion institutes in North-East India. Craft Bazaar 2022: 

Craft Bazaar is an innovative initiative of the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) held every year with charm and delight. The theme of Craft Bazaar 2022 at the campus is "Empowering North East crafts through Design Intervention. The event for the Shillong campus took place on the Umsawli campus on April 29 and 30, 2022. It took place from 11 am to 7 pm. Nagaland Jewelry, Kouna Craft, Black Pottery of Longpi Manipur, Embroidery and Crochet, Wood Carving, Woodwares, Terracotta, Cane and Bamboo jewellery and products, Dry Flowers, Handloom, Hand-printed textiles, etc., were some of the main components of the prestigious event. Navisha Rai designed the event. The two-day craft bazaar brought together 24 artisans all over the North East region. The NIFT event was a part of the Azadi ka Amrit Mohatsav and North East Festival, and at the event, the students presented unique North-East costumes. 

India Today has placed the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Shillong 12th (among 46 institutions) in Fashion Design (2021). However, the institution ranked first in Fashion Design in the Meghalaya region. 

The Week ranked the institute ninth (among 19 institutions) in the Fashion Technology section in 2020. In Meghalaya, the institute ranked first as per The Week. 

In the previous year (2019), The Week ranked the institute 11th (out of 16 institutions) in the Fashion Technology section. 

National Institute of Fashion Technology, Shillong Courses, and Fees

Every year many students apply for different courses at the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Shillong. The college provides superior education and industrial exposure in the different courses it offers. Various courses in the college have different eligibility criteria.  The NIFT Shillong admission process is totally conducted online. 

To be eligible for the National Institute of Fashion Technology, Shillong undergraduate courses, candidates must pass their 10+2 qualifying examination with good marks. In addition, they have to complete their 10+2 study from any recognised board and institute. 

Admission to the Master of Fashion Management (MFM) course the college provides requires passing an undergraduate degree from any recognised institution or a three-year course from NIFT/NID. 

The college also provides different Continuing Education (CE) Programmes, which need passing the 10+2 qualifying examination to be eligible. However, some of the courses require a qualification in 10+2+3 or graduation. 

Eligibility Criteria of Undergraduate Courses 

National Institute of Fashion Technology, Shillong, provides different Bachelor of Design courses- Bachelor of Design (B.Des) in Accessory Design, Fashion Design, Textile Design, and Fashion Communication. Among these, the college started B.Des in Accessory Design and B.Des in Fashion Design courses in 2008 and B.Des in Textile Design, and B.Des in Fashion Communication courses from 2020. Students seeking admission in different Bachelor of Design courses in NIFT, Shillong, Meghalaya, have to pass-

The 10+2 qualifying examination is conducted by any State or Central board of secondary education, like the State Board of New Delhi, Council for Indian School of Certificate Examination, New Delhi, etc. 

GCE or General Certificate Education (Sri-Lanka/London/Cambridge) at the A (Advanced) level or International Baccalaureate (IB). 

Any national or international Public School/University/Board Examination equivalent to the 10+2 system as recognised by the AIU or Association of Indian Universities.  

The Senior Secondary School Examination with at least 5 subjects is conducted by the National Open School.

Reservation of seats for different categories: 

The seat reservation for different categories are as mentioned below-

Students belonging to the SC category can avail 15% of seats.

For students belonging to the ST category, 7.5% of seats are reserved.

OBC students can take advantage of 27% of the seats.

Students who belong to the PwD category can take advantage of 5% of the total seats. 

State domicile can avail 20% seat reservation. 

Eligibility Criteria for Postgraduate Courses

Any candidate who fulfils the criteria for entry into the National Institute of Fashion Technology, Shillong postgraduate course can be admitted. The institute has only one PG course- Master of Fashion Management (MFM). The eligibility criteria for the PG course are mentioned below-

Candidates seeking admission in the course have to complete undergraduate courses from any institution/university recognised by Indian Law. 

Undergraduate diploma course of at least three years from any National Institute of Fashion Technology campus or National Institute of Design. 

There is no age limit for admission to the Master of Fashion Management course in the college. Therefore, persons of any age can secure admission to the course.

Showing a score on the GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) is mandatory for admission to the program. The merit list of the students eligible to secure entry in the MFM course is prepared based on the GMAT score of the students.

National Institute of Fashion Technology, Meghalaya requires passing in 10+2 with a valid score for admission in undergraduate programs and acquiring graduation in any field for postgraduate programmes. However, appearing in the NIFT Entrance Examination is necessary for admission to the institution. The candidates obtaining higher scores in the entrance examination will be given preference to secure admittance in their intended course from their desired campus. The application procedure for NIFT Entrance Examination is entirely online, and candidates can also pay fees online. The process for applying for the NIFT Entrance exam, 2023 is mentioned below-

How to Fill the Application Form?

• In the application form, fill up your details, residential details, academic details, etc.
• Then you have to select your preferred test centre in the application form.
• You must upload the required documents in the application form. 
• You should pay the application fees as you complete all the necessary steps to fill up the application form. 
• Candidates should take a printout of the payment information as well as of the application form for any future reference. 
• Before paying the fee for the application, candidates can edit any information in the application form in case they have made any mistakes. After paying the application fee, the candidate can edit no information. If a candidate does not check well before making the payment, any kind of mistake may lead to the candidate's disqualification. 

NIFT Shillong Application Fee

Students have to pay the application fee for the entrance examination of the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT). The application fees may vary as per the category of students. 

In the case of General/Other Backward Classes (non-creamy)/General-Economically Weaker Sections (EWS), the application fee is Rs 3,000. 

In the case of the scheduled caste/scheduled tribe/PwD category, the application fee is Rs 1,500.

SARTHAK

Students with master's and bachelor's degrees can apply for this scholarship scheme at the Shillong National Institute of Fashion Technology. However, the income of their parents must fall under any of the counts mentioned below-

Up to Rs 1.5 Lakh

Above Rs 1.5 Lakh up to Rs 2.5 Lakh

Above Rs 2.5 Lakh up to Rs 4.0 Lakh

Also, to avail of this scholarship (in the second, third, fourth year of UG and second year of PG), students have to maintain the SGPA of at least 6.00 for the two previous consecutive semesters.

International students from an economically weak backgrounds can avail this scholarship.
