Initially the institute functioned from the Tribal Research Institute at Mawlai, Gaushala using its office rooms as classrooms and laboratories and a temporary shed for workshop practices. The only course offered at that time was civil engineering and the annual intake of students was 60. In 1968 due to a fire that destroyed the Tribal Research Institute, Shillong Polytechnic was shifted to rented rooms and eventually to its present site. Shillong Polytechnic is continuously striving to keep abreast of the latest technological developments with an aim for capacity expansion, quality enhancement and overall improvement of the efficiency of the institution.
