As Indian students return to the safety and comfort of their homes with their families, after experiencing harrowing situations in the war-inflicted Ukraine, many, including students, have to worry and question the future of their studies.
According to the statistics, most students who had been enrolled in Ukrainian universities were pursuing medical education, i.e. MBBS. According to current NMC regulations, all Indian students pursuing their medical education must complete their degree in the same institution where they had enrolled. This regulation is extremely important for those looking to build a career as a doctor in India.
However, as the situation in Ukraine continues to remain questionable, with no confirmation as to the future of the continuity of different education programmes, former Punjab Health Minister Balbir Singh Sidhu, has reached out to PM Narendra Modi to help these students.

According to Indian Express, the former health minister of Punjab “demanded immediate admission medical students returning to government and private colleges in India for free.”
In his statement, he highlighted the need for “no harm or disruption in their education” as the reason for the Indian government to arrange admissions of these students, without charging them any fee.
Sidhu further highlighted that Indians comprised the majority of the international students studying in Ukraine, with an estimated 19,000 Indians, enrolled in engineering, medical and nursing courses.

He also pointed out that the students had been concerned regarding their future as all of the returned either right after admission or in the middle of their course. However, seeing the current global situation with the Ukraine-Russia conflict and the pandemic, the NMC has permitted Indian medical students to apply for internships in India. However, such students must still first clear the FMGE to be able to take up internships in India.
