With its roots travelling back to over 175 years, i.e. 1838, the University was recognised under a different alias, i.e. Medical College of Hampden-Sydney, later known as the Medical College of Virginia. It was in 1968 that along with the Richmond Professional Institute, Medical College of Virginia merged together to form an educational institution, now known as the Virginia Commonwealth University. Virginia Commonwealth University has been gaining recognition, awards and ranks in various categories from research, hospital to being the best universities for diversity and minorities. A total of 25 of its programmes and courses have been recognised as the top 50 courses in the country. VCU is a public research-based university situated in the heart of Richmond, Virginia, USA. It is a popular choice among study abroad students who wish to pursue careers in the fields of Engineering, Medical and Humanities. Currently, more than 31,000 students are pursuing higher studies at VCU out of which approx 1,600 are international students.
Infrastructure, Campus & Courses
The campus of Virginia Commonwealth University is spread over 169 acres, consisting of academic and residential infrastructure for the benefit of the students. Facilities and infrastructure set up on the campus ensure the all-round development of the students, in their respective fields of study. The library of VCU is one of the largest libraries in the whole state with more than 3 million books and research journals. Students pursuing research and doctoral programmes are provided with the best assistance at VCU. The Virginia Commonwealth University offers a range of undergraduate, graduate and professional programmes for the students to study. These include Life Sciences, Arts, Humanities, Social Work, Engineering, Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing, Business, Public Affairs, Journalism and Media, Education and Honours courses as well. With more than 220 courses, VCU has successfully incorporated all the top courses to study in the USA in their academic list. VCU offers about 60 bachelor’s degrees and 70 master’s degrees to international students.

This claim of a richly diverse campus is backed by the number of rankings, awards and recognitions conferred to the university, viz. Virginia Commonwealth University conducts industry-centred networking events designed to help students form professional networking and further their career. VCU students are also encouraged to connect with the university community of alumni, professionals and faculties for career advice, contacts and associate professional relationships with each other.
Virginia Commonwealth University has set up rules and regulations that facilitate the health and safety of the students, staff and faculty through various initiatives. Continuing the trend, the University will offer a blended model of learning, i.e. online & in-person classes to social distancing norms and practices such as wearing face-masks and sanitisation of the entire campus on a daily basis.
A blended model of learning will be opted for the Fall 2020 session at Virginia Commonwealth University, i.e. in-person classes for subjects with a smaller number of students, while online classes will be implemented for all with a larger attendance of students.
Social distancing norms such as wearing face-masks, maintaining a 2 meters distance, sanitisation and cleansing of the campus facilities and rooms, etc, will be implemented.
Student accommodation will be offered to students based on a strict schedule, which is to be followed by all to maintain social distancing among the students.
International students will be asked to quarantine for a 14-day period, upon arrival to ensure the safety and health of all the students.
At Virginia Commonwealth University, scholarships may be based on academic merit, leadership, artistic talent or community service All meritorious applicants are considered for university-level scholarships if they apply for the Fall semester by November 1. No separate application is required for the same. In addition to that, a limited number of scholarship opportunities are also open to transfer students from the Virginia Community College system who have obtained at least 45 semester credit hours.
The Common Application must be submitted to the university latest by November 1.
Finalists in the university’s National Merit Scholarship Programme who apply by November 1 and inform the National Merit Scholarship Corp. by May 31 that VCU is their first choice will be considered for a VCU Presidential Scholarship.

Merit-based scholarships: Awarded only during the Fall semester which covers in-state costs only.
Additional scholarships: Awarded by the Office of Admission to recognise an applicant's academic achievements, leadership or other personal qualities.
Duration of the Scholarship: Four years
Value: Covers tuition fees up to $16,000 per year (maximum amount of $8,000 per semester), for an estimated total value of $114,356.
Cumulative GPA should be between 4.50-4.72.
SAT Scores based on critical reading and math scores should range from 1490 to 1550.
Duration of the Scholarship: Four years
Value: Covers tuition fees up to $16,000 per year (maximum amount of $8,000 per semester), taking the total value close to $64,000.
Cumulative GPA should be between 4.39-4.66.
SAT Scores based on critical reading and math scores should range from 1380 to 1490.
Duration of the Scholarship: Four years
Value: Covers tuition fees up to $16,000 per year (maximum amount of $8,000 per semester), taking the total value close to $32,000.
Cumulative GPA should be between 4.22-4.50.
SAT Scores based on critical reading and math scores should range from 1330 to 1440.
Value: One-half of in-state tuition fees.
In addition to these scholarships, individual schools and departments at the university offer scholarships to incoming freshmen. Scholarship aid is also available for applicants part of a VCU athletic team.
