UPSC Photo Guidelines 2026 should be followed for the application to be accepted and moved further. The photo should be between 20 and 200 KB and must be uploaded in JPG format.

While planning and preparation are secondary, the first step to climb the UPSC ladder is filling out the Common Application Form (CAF) or the UPSC Application Form . Here are a few instructions to consider before uploading your photograph:

  • You need to upload the photo in JPG format with a size between 20 KB and 200 KB.
  • The name of the file should be “Photo.”
  • The photo should be clear, recent, and show your full face.
  • The photo must have a 3/4th face coverage.
  • The background of the photograph must be Plain White.
  • In the photograph, the frontal view of the full face should be visible with the head in the centre, and both ears should be visible.
  • The eyes of the aspirant must be open, and the edges of the face must be clearly visible.
  • The expression of the face should be natural.
  • The photograph must be recent.
  • Photographs with a dark background shall not be accepted.
  • The aspirant must not be in any uniform or have eyes hidden under coloured or dark glasses.
  • No shadows should be visible on the face or in the background.
  • Hair must be out of the face.
  • There should be no glare on eyeglasses.
  • The photograph is NOT to be signed.

UPSC Live Photo Guidelines 2026

With the introduction of live photographs, many aspirants are left confused. Check out the guidelines set by the Union Public Service Commission for live photographs while filling out the application form:

  • A live photograph is mandatory to successfully fill out the application form.
  • You can capture a live photograph using the web camera of your current device or by scanning the QR code displayed on the screen and capturing the photo using your mobile device.
  • The photograph should be captured in good lighting.
  • The candidate’s face must be clearly visible.
  • You can use the “View Photo” option available to verify the image after it is captured.
  • The live photograph should match the passport-size photograph uploaded by the applicant.
  • If there is a mismatch, then the application will be rejected.

With the introduction of new technology and stricter rules, it is mandatory to keep in mind the guidelines issued by UPSC before filling out CAF.
