NEET 2024 Tie-Breaker Policy

NEET 2024 Tie-Breaker Policy has been revised in the updated information bulletin released on the official website. In this revision of the NEET tie-breaking rule, the lottery system that relied solely on computer technology and no human intervention has been eliminated. The previous tie-breaking policy for NEET-UG has now been introduced again by the authority.

Based on this  old NEET Tie-Breaker Policy, students who have scored higher marks in NEET Biology, Chemistry, and Physics will be decided by drawing lots using a computer or IT without human participation. The NEET UG 2024 exam will be held on May 5 and its result will be out on June 14, 2024. Due to the more than 25 lakh applicants, there might be situations where two or more candidates score the same marks. In such cases, determining their ranks will be crucial. For this reason, the NTA has devised a tie-breaker policy that will allow all applicants to be fairly ranked and shortlisted for admissions.

NEET Attempt Limit - How Many Attempts for NEET 2024

NEET Attempt Limit refers to the number of times a candidate can appear for the NEET Entrance Exam. As of now, there are no restrictions on the number of NEET 2024 Attempt Limits but candidates are advised to focus on preparing well for the NEET UG 2024 Exam to crack it on the first go. The attempt limit for NEET has been through many changes over the years. Earlier, there were NEET attempt restrictions. However, the demand for a change in the structure of exam conduct, followed by court orders, contributed to abolishing the rules regarding the restricted number of NEET attempts. So, for candidates wondering how many attempts for NEET 2024, the answer simply is, unlimited.

The NEET UG 2024 Exam is scheduled to be held on May 5, 2024, and the result of the same will be declared by July 15, 2024. Candidates who qualify the age criteria and other eligibility requirements for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test are free to appear for the entrance test as many times as they desire. For a clear understanding, scroll down and get more details on the NEET Attempt Limit.

Background of Attempt Limit for NEET UG 2024

NEET UG Exam is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), for aspiring medical candidates who wish to secure admission into the MBBS Course and BDS course. The regulatory board of NTA has officially announced the removal of the restricted NEET attempt limit for the entrance exam. Earlier, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) endorsed the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare notification announcing the withdrawal of the restricted NEET attempt in December 2017.
Previously, each candidate was only allowed to appear for the NEET UG exam thrice. In case a candidate failed to clear the entrance test, they were not allowed to appear for the same again after three NEET attempts. However, due to its challenging nature and increasing number of applicants every year, the NEET exam authorities faced criticisms regarding their strict attempt limit for NEET UG entrance. Therefore, to cater to the demand of the candidates, the maximum number of attempt limit for NEET UG was removed and modified. Thus, this answers the question: how many attempts for NEET?

NEET Attempt Limit Previous Years’ Trends (2023-2017)

Mentioned below are the year-wise NEET Attempt Limit trends, observed through the lens of time. Each year had an interesting new aspect of the maximum NEET attempt. Let us quickly glance through the NEET Attempt Limit Previous Years’ Trends:

NEET Attempt Limit 2022-23

In 2022, an official circular was released by the National Medical Commission (NMC) highlighting the removal of the upper age limit for NEET UG entrance exam. The same was published on the official website for candidates to follow just before the NEET UG exam registration. This circular was made available to the public in March 2022. Similarly, a similar statement regarding the revised number of NEET attempt limit was released by the NTA in 2023.

NEET Attempt Limit 2021-20

NEET attempt limit between the years 2020 and 2021 was followed as per the current norm. Candidates were allowed to take part in the NEET UG exam and opt for as many NEET attempt as they wished for, without restrictions. However, due to the challenging question pattern and an increasing number of applicants in NEET, each year witnesses numerous NEET attempts of different individuals who struggle to crack the NEET UG Exam on their first attempt.

NEET Attempt Limit 2019

A popular controversy that rose around the NEET Attempt Limit in 2021 was the declared ineligibility of students from open schools to appear in the NEET UG exam. The official notification declared that candidates who passed their Higher Secondary or its equivalent from Open Schooling were not eligible for NEET UG candidature. While the decision was introduced in 2017, this criterion came into action in 2018. As many students were barred from appearing in the NEET UG Exam, this caused a major uproar countrywide. Later, this decision was revoked, and open school students were allowed to appear for the exam from 2019 onwards.

NEET Attempt Limit 2018

The decision to announce an upper age limit for NEET UG exam was first revealed via a Gazette of India notification in January 2018. However, due to the inconvenience caused by the decision, several students started to protest. This, therefore, forced the official authority of MCI to scrap away the age limit criterion within one week of introducing the NEET attempt limit rule. Thus, the only age limit criterion to be followed ever since is that the applying candidate must be at least 17 years of age or above.

NEET Attempt Limit 2017

In 2017, the CBSE introduced the revised upper age limit and the maximum NEET Attempt Limit for the NEET UG Exam as important criteria to be fulfilled by the aspirants. The upper age limit was set as 25 years of age, while the lower age limit NEET UG attempt limit was the same as 17 years of age. The maximum number of NEET Attempt Limit was decided to be 3 times. However, this decision was overruled by the Supreme Court and therefore, the eligibility criteria for NEET attempt limit was immediately revised the next year.
