Nagaland University, India's 13th Central University and the only Central University in Nagaland, was established by an Act of Parliament that received the President's assent on October 20, 1989, as THE NAGALAND UNIVERSITY ACT 1989 (No. 35 of 1989) and went into effect on October 20, 1989, as notified in THE GAZETTE OF INDIA EXTRAORDINARY PART-II SECTION-1 published by the Ministry of Law and Justice (Legislative Department), New Delhi.
On September 6, 1994, the University was established, with jurisdiction over the whole state of Nagaland. Nagaland had previously been part of the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) catchment area, with Kohima and SASRD-Medziphema serving as NEHU campuses. With the creation of Nagaland University, the two former NEHU campuses and the colleges connected with it were transferred to Nagaland University. The nascent University had to deal with many teething issues at first. According to the Act, the University's Headquarters, Lumami, could not immediately accommodate the necessary to begin working as Headquarters. As a result, Nagaland University has operated from Kohima as its interim headquarters for about a decade and a half.
As a result, Nagaland University has operated from Kohima as its interim headquarters for about a decade and a half. Meanwhile, the government approved the establishment of academic departments in 1997. All new departments had to be established in Lumami, and operations began with Kohima as the interim headquarters. Construction works started in earnest to make the Headquarters as suitable for intellectual interests as feasible. In the middle of 2010, the temporary arrangement in Kohima was moved to Lumami once new works were completed to a reasonable state.
The University now has four campuses: I Headquarters in Lumami, Zunheboto district; (ii) Kohima Campus in Meriema, Kohima district; (iii) Medziphema Campus (School of Agricultural Sciences and Rural Development) in Dimapur district; and (iv) a temporary campus in Dimapur district (School of Engineering & Technology).
