National Institute of Technology Agartala - NIT Agartala - NITA

Tripura is one of the eight states in the north-eastern part of India. The state is situated between the river valley of Myanmar and Bangladesh, and is bounded by Bangladesh on the north, west, south and southeast; in the east it has a common boundary with Assam and Mizoram. The state is famous for its picturesque greenery as about 60% of its total land area is covered with green forest. The Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) issued the official notification for conversion of Tripura Engineering College, Agartala to National Institute of Technology Agartala w.e.f. 01.04.2006 vide notification No. F. 20-20/2004/TS III/ dated 10.03.2006. This is the 20th NIT in India and 2nd in the North-Eastern region. The Institute (i.e. erstwhile Tripura Engineering College) was established in 1965 with three branches at UG level viz Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. It was initially affiliated to Calcutta University and had the same curriculum structure and examination system of Bengal Engineering College, like other institutes affiliated to the University. After the establishment of Tripura University, the institute got affiliated to the new Tripura University. Degree course in Computer Science & Engineering was started in 1999-2000 Academic Session. Three new branches viz. Electrical & Electronics Engineering (now Electronics & Communication Engineering), Production Engineering and Civil &Transportation Engineering were introduced in this Institute during 2005-2006 session. Two more new courses viz. Electronics & Instrumentation and Chemical Engineering were also introduced in undergraduate level from the Academic Session 2010-11. From the Academic Session 2012-13 Bio-Engineering at undergraduate level has been started in the Institute. Apart from this, Institute also offer MBA, MCA programmes and M.Sc course in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry along with dual degree programme in Engineering Physics and science courses in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and C-DAC centre for imbibing vocational education within the academic and industrial community. The institute has impelled the dispersion of quality education and pioneering research in the field of Science and Technology, Social Upliftment and Rural developments in the highly segregated regions of the North-East India.  After conversion, the NIT started its journey with six department having student strength 750 in the year 2006. Whereas in 2014 the Institute to grows in manifold having nine departments in the undergraduate with PG and Ph.D. The total strength has been increased upto 3634 including 572 PG and 234 nos. of Ph.D scholars. The institute has also introduced Doctorate of Science and Doctorate of Engineering from the year 2012 in their respective field of research. The students and scholars of the Institute enjoy scholarships from TEQIP, AICTE and MHRD. The Institute offers scholarships to its Post-Doctoral Fellows. NIT Agartala was recently approved to be a QIP Minor Centre in the year 2012 and now accepts QIP scholars from the other institute of repute.At present about 3500 students are studying in the institute. Under graduate students are admitted as per ranking of Joint Entrance Examination (Main). M.Tech students are admitted on the basis of Common Counselling based on all India ranking in GATE examination. Ph.D scholars are admitted through interview by making wide publicity in All India newspapers. The institute at present has adequate number of faculty members. Hostel facility for the students is available in the Institute. A 1000 (one thousand) capacity boys hostel and 500 (five hundred) capacity girls hostel have been made operational and the construction of another 1500 capacity hostel is going on and it is expected to be completed soon. The institute has a hospital attached to it having adequate number of Doctors. There is a primary health centre at Jirania which is only 4 (four) km. from NIT, Agartala. There are 2 (two) medical colleges and hospitals namely “ Agartala Govt. Medical College” and “Dr. B.R. Ambedkar memorial medical college and hospital” and a referral hospital namely “Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital” at Agartala which are only 17 km. from NIT, Agartala.
