VIT Vellore Cutoff 2026

VIT Vellore cutoff 2026 has been released for the VITEEE in 2 phases. VIT Vellore cutoff 2025 is determined by the closing ranks published during VITEEE counselling. For VIT Vellore BTech 2025 admissions, the VITEEE closing rank is between 1 and 45,000.

For MTech admissions through VITMEE 2025, the closing rank ranged from 800 (CSE, Category 1) to 6,500 (Biotechnology, Category 2). For MBA 2025, the cutoff stood at 90 percentile in CAT, the 85th percentile in NMAT, the 80th percentile in MAT, and 70 percentile in XAT for General category candidates.

VIT follows a 5-tier fee category system for B.Tech and MTech. Category 1 seats go to the highest-ranked candidates at the lowest annual fee, while Category 5 accepts candidates with higher rank numbers at a higher fee. All five categories lead to the same degree from the same campus.

CSE remained the most competitive BTech branch in 2025 — only the top 0.4% of VITEEE candidates secured core CSE in Category 1 at Vellore. Candidates with ranks beyond 1,00,000 are not eligible for VIT Vellore or VIT Chennai and can only participate in counselling for VIT Bhopal and VIT AP (Amaravati).

How VIT Vellore Cutoff and Category System Work?

VIT Vellore does not announce a single cutoff number. Instead, seats are allotted during online VITEEE counselling conducted in 5 phases. The rank at which the last seat in a given branch and category gets filled is the closing rank, and that becomes the cutoff for that combination. Understanding the 5-category system is important before knowing VIT Vellore Cutoff.

CategoryWhat it MeansRank Level
Category 1Top merit students (best performers)Highest ranks
Category 2Very good performers (next top tier)High ranks
Category 3Average performers (middle tier)Moderate ranks

The category assigned to a candidate depends on their rank and the demand for that branch during each round of counselling. Ranks can shift across 5 counselling rounds as top-ranked students move to preferred branches, freeing up Category 1 seats.

VIT Vellore VITMEE Cutoff 2025

The Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) does not publicly release the exact official final cutoff marks or ranks for its M.Tech programs, as seat allotment is done via counselling based on the VITMEE results.

Just like B.Tech, MTech admissions at VIT are also divided into fee categories, primarily Category 1 (Base Fee) and Category 2 (Higher Fee). Furthermore, candidates with a valid GATE score are given preference over VITMEE candidates during the seat allotment process, so GATE-qualified students fill most Category 1 seats, making VITMEE cutoffs higher (more competitive).

VIT Vellore VITMEE Branch-Wise Cutoff 2025

VIT Vellore MTech cutoff 2025 ranges from around 800 rank in Category 1 for CSE to nearly 6,500 rank in Category 2 for Biotechnology and core branches. MTech CSE remains the most competitive specialisation, with Category 1 closing near 800 and Category 2 around 2,500. AI & ML. Here is the VIT Master's Entrance Examination (VITMEE) Cutoff 2025 for the main VIT Vellore campus, based on category:

  • CSE & VLSI Domination: These two branches were in massive demand. If a student wanted Category 1 in CSE at the Vellore campus via the VITMEE exam, they strictly needed a rank under 800.
  • Category 2 Fallback: Many students scoring between 50–60 marks (Ranks 1,000 to 3,000) missed out on Category 1 for CSE and VLSI but were successfully allotted seats in Category 2.
  • Core Branches are Relaxed: Branches like Mechanical, Automotive, and Power Electronics saw much deeper closing ranks, allowing students with average scores (40-50 marks) to easily secure Category 1 seats.

Factors That Affect VIT Vellore Cutoff

The VIT Vellore cutoff changes every year. Several factors push the closing ranks up or down across branches and categories.

  • Total number of VITEEE applicants: More than 2.5 lakh candidates appeared in 2025. A higher applicant pool generally makes Category 1 cutoffs more competitive for top branches.
  • Number of seats per branch and category: VIT Vellore has approximately 5,000 BTech seats across all categories at the Vellore campus. CSE has more seats than Civil, but it also has far more demand.
  • Exam difficulty and normalisation: VITEEE is conducted in multiple slots. VIT uses the Equipercentile Method to normalise scores across slots, which can slightly shift the marks-to-rank relationship.
  • Student preferences during counselling: Top-ranked candidates often leave Category 1 seats in less popular branches to move to CSE or IT. This can open Category 1 cutoffs for slightly lower-ranked candidates in later rounds.
  • Performance of applicants in a given year: A particularly easy exam leads to more high scorers, pushing Category 1 cutoffs down (meaning harder to get in). A tougher exam spreads ranks more evenly.
  • Number of candidates opting for Vellore vs other campuses: If more candidates prefer VIT Chennai or VIT AP, Vellore cutoffs may loosen slightly in less-demanded branches.
  • Introduction of new specialisations: New BTech specialisations (e.g., CSE with AI & Robotics) attract demand away from existing specialisations, sometimes affecting closing ranks.

Dear student, you apply to VIT Vellore undergraduate courses only after you have completed your Class 12 exams. To be eligible for any UG courses, you need to show your class marksheet and completion certificate, as admission will depend on the marks you obtained in class 12 + any entrance exam (as per the requirements of the university).

J
Jayita Ekka •  Jul-03-2025

Dear student,

With a rank of 4531 in VITEEE, you have very good chances of getting B.Tech CSE or B.Tech CSE (AI & ML) at VIT AP, especially in higher fee categories.

In 2024, the closing rank at VIT was around 4894 - 5135 (Boys) and 5078 - 5209 (Girls) for Category 1/General. And the general expected 2025 Cutoff for VIT’s B.Tech in AI & ML is under 6000 for category 1

However, for Category 2, 3, or 4, the cutoffs can extend significantly. Some predictions for VIT-AP CSE (AI & ML) for 2025 indicate ranges like 5209-53479 for various categories/ rounds.

You can refer to VIT's Previous-year cut-offs, and estimate 2025 cut-offs as well. The VITEEE counselling process is currently ongoing & our advice would be to attend the counselling rounds carefully. Good luck!

Dipanjana Sengupta •  May-26-2025

No, a student who has completed VITEEE 2025 Phase 2 counselling at VIT and received a seat allotment is generally not eligible to participate in subsequent phases like Phase 3. Once a student confirms their admission by paying the required fee after a successful seat allotment, their admission is considered final, and they are not allowed to participate in further counselling rounds.

VIT Vellore CutOffs FAQs

How do round-wise cutoffs change during VIT counseling?

VIT has multiple counseling rounds where students can upgrade their branch or fee category. Usually, cutoffs increase slightly in later rounds because top-rank students move to better branches, freeing up seats. For example, in 2025, CSE Category 1 started at rank 2,900 in Round 1 and reached 3,500 by Round 4. Similarly, ECE Category 2 moved from rank 20,000 to 24,000. So, if you don’t get your preferred branch in the first round, keep participating in all rounds to get a better chance of upgrading.

Does Biotechnology have lower cutoffs than other B.Tech branches?

Yes, Biotechnology has moderate cutoffs. In Category 1, it closed at rank 16,000, while CSE closed at 950. You need about 74–92 marks out of 125 to get in. Biotechnology is easier than CSE, AI/ML, Data Science, and ECE, but a bit harder than Mechanical or Civil Engineering. It’s a good choice if you are interested in life sciences and engineering. Fees are the same as other B.Tech branches, so it gives good value for money while offering a balanced chance of admission.

What M.Tech cutoff marks are needed in VITMEE?

For M.Tech CSE through VITMEE, General category students need around 400 marks, while reserved categories (SC/ST/OBC) need 350–380 marks. Mechanical Engineering has lower cutoffs: 350 marks for General and 300–330 for reserved categories. Biotechnology is the easiest, needing 320 marks for General and 280–310 for reserved. You can also use GATE scores instead of VITMEE marks for M.Tech admission. So, depending on your branch and category, the marks needed vary, with CSE being the toughest and Biotechnology the easiest.

Has CSE cutoff become tougher over the years at VIT?

Yes, CSE cutoffs have become much tougher. In 2021, Category 1 CSE closed at rank 1,800 with 100–108 marks. By 2025, it improved to rank 950 with 113+ marks. This shows that competition is increasing every year. Students now need to score much higher marks to get CSE in top categories. The trend suggests that in 2026, cutoffs may rise again, so scoring well in VITEEE is very important if you want CSE at VIT Vellore.

What CAT percentile do I need for VIT Vellore MBA?

For MBA at VIT Vellore, General category students need 70 percentile in CAT, OBC students need 65 percentile, and SC/ST students need 60 percentile. If you haven’t taken CAT, you can also use XAT or MAT scores. For XAT, General category needs 70 percentile, and for MAT, 80 percentile. These cutoffs are moderate, so students with decent entrance exam scores and good academic records have a good chance of getting admission. VIT makes MBA accessible for many students with fair exam performance.

How do VIT's fee categories work with cutoff ranks?

VIT has 5 fee categories. Category 1 has the lowest fees but is for students with the best ranks. As the category number goes up (2, 3, 4, 5), fees increase, but it becomes easier to get admission because the cutoff rank is higher. For example, CSE Category 1 needs a rank under 950, while Category 5 accepts up to rank 25,500. If you don’t get a lower category seat, you can choose a higher category during counseling. This system ensures most students can get admission, just at different fee levels.

What are the expected cutoffs for Mechanical Engineering in 2026?

Mechanical Engineering is easier to get compared to CSE or ECE. In Category 1 (lowest fees), the closing rank in 2025 was around 42,000, and it’s expected to be similar in 2026. You need about 62–82 marks out of 125 to get in. Even in Category 5 (highest fee), seats close around rank 78,000. So, if you score 65–70 marks, you have a good chance of admission, and affordable fee options are available in lower categories. Mechanical is a good choice if your VITEEE marks are moderate.

How many marks do I need for ECE in VIT Vellore?

For ECE in Category 1 (lowest fees), you need 83–102 marks out of 125, which usually gives a rank under 8,000. If you choose Category 2 (slightly higher fees), you can get ECE with a rank up to 14,000. ECE is easier than CSE or AI/ML, so even if you score 80+ marks, you still have a good chance to get admission.

Is AI/ML harder to get than CSE at VIT Vellore?

AI/ML is actually a bit easier than CSE. In 2025, AI/ML Category 1 closed at rank 2,800, while CSE closed at 950. You need around 94–112 marks out of 125 for AI/ML. Both branches are competitive, but CSE is the toughest to get. If you score 90–95 marks, your chances of getting AI/ML are better than CSE. So, if your marks are slightly lower than top CSE scorers, AI/ML is a good option to aim for.

What rank do I need for CSE in VIT Vellore?

If you want Computer Science (CSE) in Category 1 (lowest fees), you need a rank below 950 in VITEEE. This usually means scoring around 113 or more out of 125. For higher-fee categories like 2 or 3, you can still get CSE with ranks up to 19,000. Cutoffs usually go a little higher each year, so for 2026, try to score at least 92+ marks to be safe for top categories. Remember, lower the category number, tougher the cutoff but lower the fee.
