Established in the year 1832, Durham University is currently one of the best not just in the UK but in the world for pursuing higher education. A public, research-oriented university, it holds the 5th position in the Guardian University Guide. Affiliations include ACU, Universities UK, N8, EUA, Wallace Group, Universities U.K., Virgo Consortium. According to the QS Global World Ranking 2021, the university is ranked at #86. Times Higher Education ranks the university at the 133rd position in its World University Rankings 2020.

Infrastructure, Campus & Courses

Durham University has one of the most extensive course catalogues in the UK and more than 330 undergraduate and postgraduate programmes can be pursued here. The university is renowned for its academic excellence and 18 of the subjects that it offers rank in the world top 100. The university has four departments and 17 colleges are part of Durham University’s collegiate system. As far as the infrastructure is concerned, Durham has a lush 563 acres estate, which includes a monument that is a part of the UNESCO world heritage site. The university has big and beautiful classrooms, well-equipped laboratories, and enriched libraries.

The global popularity that the university enjoys is not only because of the remarkable standards of academics that it maintains but also because it has one of the highest levels of research activity in the UK. It is counted among one of the world’s top for study in Archaeology, Geography, and Theology, divinity and religious studies. The Durham alumni network remains quite active through annual reunions, Ball and Dinners. COVID-19 Response 

Durham University will continue to offer on campus classes from September. Students will experience world-class education and the priority of the university is to ensure safety, health and well-being of every member of the university. The first term begins in September covers innovative and flexible learning through face-to-face interaction between students and faculty. Looking at the current situation, Durham University has combined face-to-face session and digital delivery. The digital delivery will be helpful for students who will not be able to attend the on-campus classes due to travel restrictions. Such students can inform it through the online self-service system of the university. Students who will join on-campus classes with some delay can opt for blended learning. However, if the student is unable to join the on-campus facility for a long term then the university would recommend them to continue online classes for the entire year.

International Excellence Scholarship

Merit-based scholarships offered to international students who show excellent academic ability. All international applications to undergraduate programmes are automatically considered eligible for these scholarships and there is no need to file a separate application.
Value: £2,000
Deadline: 15th January
Eligibility: International Excellence Scholarships are available to candidates who satisfy the following eligibility criteria.

  • Have an offer of study in the BSc or MMath programme in Mathematics and Statistics.
  • Be a self-funding international applicant.
  • Be willing to participate in the marketing activities organized by the university.

Commonwealth Shared Scholarships

A scholarship award that can be claimed by Commonwealth nationals pursuing postgraduate-level study at Durham University. A separate application needs to be filed for this scholarship and applicants are also required to communicate their intention to apply on the Durham University application as well.
Value: Full tuition fees + £1,110 stipend per month + additional allowances
Deadline: 18 December
Eligibility: Candidates seeking the Commonwealth Shared Scholarships must satisfy the following eligibility criteria.

  • Be a citizen of a Commonwealth nation.
  • Must be unable to support the cost of study in the UK without the scholarship.
  • Must be enrolled in one of the following programmes: M.Sc in Medical Anthropology / Sustainability, Culture and Development / Energy and Society / Environmental and Natural Resource Economics / Civil Engineering / Risk / Defence, Development and Diplomacy / Conflict Prevention and Peacebuilding or MA in Risk
  • Must not have completed one year of study in a developed country.

Chevening Scholarships

A number of scholarships available for nationals of select countries. The Chevening Scholarship website must be consulted for details regarding the types of scholarships available and the complete eligibility criteria.
Deadline: 5th November
Value: Tuitions fees + living allowance + some additional expenditure
Eligibility: Candidates must be:

  • Citizen of a Chevening-eligible country (India is included).
  • Pursuing a master’s degree programme at Durham University.
