Age Limit to Become a CBI Officer in India

The age limit for entry into the CBI differs depending on the position.  Certain categories can also avail themselves of age relaxation. 

For General Category: Generally, the age to apply for the position of Sub-Inspector (SI) in the CBI through the SSC CGL Recruitment Exam lies between 20 and 30 years. A Bachelor's Degree in any discipline from an accredited university or its equivalent is the minimum educational requirement for Sub-Inspectors (SI) in the Criminal Investigation Bureau. As a result, graduates in the age range of 20-30 are eligible to apply for this position. 

For OBC Category: The minimum age is 20 years and the maximum age is 33 years for OBC category candidates

For SC/ST Category: The minimum age is 20 years and the maximum age is 35 years for SC/ST category candidates.

For CBI Officers through UPSC: If candidates are aspiring to become a CBI Officer in India through UPSC Civil Services Exam (IPS), they must not be less than 21 years of age and more than 32 years of age.

How to Become a CBI Officer through SSC CGL

Candidates can become a CBI Officer in India through the Combined Graduate Level (CGL) Examination conducted by the Staff Selection Commission (SSC). Every year, the SSC-CGL exam is administered at the national level. Various Group B and Group C posts in different government departments will be offered to the selected candidates.   • Tier-II Exam: It is also a computer-based exam. Two papers, Paper-I and Paper II, are conducted under Tier-II. Paper-III (Statistics) and Paper-IV (General Studies-Finance and Economics) are conducted for recruitment to specific posts. 
  • Tier-III Exam: This is a descriptive-type exam in which a candidate’s writing skills in English or Hindi will be evaluated. 
  • Tier-IV Exam: It is a skill test to evaluate expertise in computer and data entry.

Posting

Most of the applicants who are selected have the opportunity to be posted to the CBI Headquarters in the Delhi Zone after their training is completed successfully. However, major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, etc. are the locations where CBI postings are typically available.

Training

Prior to joining the CBI, the final shortlisted candidates for SI posts will receive intensive training. The entire training program lasts for 59 weeks, out of which 42 weeks are devoted to training at the CBI Academy in Ghaziabad.

How to Become a CBI Officer through UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE)

Qualifying for the Civil Services Examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is the most common way to become a CBI Officer in India. How to Become a CBI Officer in India after 12th

One cannot immediately pursue a career as a CBI officer just after passing Class 12th. First, he/she has to obtain a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university in any discipline like  BA, B.COM, BCA, BBA, BE, B.Tech, B.Sc or any other branch. Then he/she can register and appear for the SSC-CGL exam. He/she will become eligible to apply for the Sub Inspector post in CBI only after qualifying for the SSC CGL exam. An alternative strategy is to apply for a Grade-A position in the CBI after becoming an IPS officer. 

When the CBI authorities announce a vacancy, he/she must submit an application for the relevant post. After that, he/she must appear in the CBI interview and perform to the best of his/her abilities. He/she will get selected for an officer post in CBI depending on his/her score in the interview.
