There are several pre-requisites that you need to complete in order to ensure you become eligible for enrolling in the course and university of your choice. Here is the Timeline for Fall (September) 2021 Intake.

1) Spread out your Options (April 2020 - August 2020)

  • Research: The first step to taking admissions to any university or institution is to research the universities and institutions of your interests.

  • Find out which colleges offer the best bang for your bucks.

  • Familiarise yourself with various bank loans and college scholarships available to you and shortlist the affordable and cost-effective options.

  • In the end, if you have a few universities that attract you, download the admission brochures of each university or institution and read through their offerings, facilities and future scope.

Note: This step is one of the more crucial steps as here you finalise the University and programme that you will pursue higher education in. Therefore, as a precaution, be thorough and sure of your choices.

2) Prepare for and Attempts Tests

  • Each university and institution in Canada offers admissions to prospective students if they have attempted the necessary tests.

  • Among the tests, international applicants need to attempt an English Proficiency Test through either TOEFL or IELTS.

  • Other tests such as GRE and GMAT are also among the commonly accepted tests that students may be required to attempt.

    • In both cases, i.e. TOFLE/IELTS or GRE/GMAT, students must go through the admission requirements for the programme of their choice as specified by the University.

    • Few Universities may accept admissions based on TOEFL only, in regards to English Proficiency Tests, or require a compulsory GRE or GMAT score.

  • For GRE/GMAT, it is essential to register for the test at least three months prior to the date of the test. The advisable time period to get this part of the process completed is between June and December of the previous year, in this case, 2020.

  • For IELTS/TOEFL, it is recommended to register one month prior to the test date.

  • Universities require you to submit scorecards to test reports at the time of application, therefore, apply and appear for the test giving yourself enough time to receive the appropriate scores and certificates. The advisable time to appear for the tests is around September to October, in the year prior to applying for admissions.

Note: Presenting certificates and scorecards for standardised tests are important to all universities in Canada. Therefore, plan your admissions accordingly. You may also be required to take the tests a second time, if you are unable to secure a good score in the tests, therefore, appear for the tests as early as possible.

3) Fill Out Your Application Forms

  • Once all your documents are ready, you must visit the websites of each shortlisted University of your choice and fill out the respective Application Forms.

  • Each university will define their requirements which must be satisfied for your applications to be considered.

  • Applications for the universities become available over year before the commencement date for the session. Therefore, you have time to complete your applications correctly and completely.

  • You must request your professors and teachers to submit their letters of recommendation for you, as these are important in some of the universities in Canada.

  • Draft your State of Purpose and the essays, as required by the university of your choice. You will need time to properly structure the SOP and essays, therefore, being the early bird here will help you out a lot.

Note: Even though Universities offer a year to apply to their programmes, you must not wait till the last second to apply. Complete all the requisites as quickly as possible and appear for the different admission processes defined by the university. Some activities may require time and effort and sometimes, even require you to redo some of the work like the standardised tests, therefore, give yourself enough buffer time to properly prepare for the admission processes.

4) Reply to College Emails and Responses

  • Once the applications have been sent out, it is now time for you to be attentive and look out for all college admission emails you receive from the Universities of your choice.

  • Colleges and University Departments may send out quite a few emails with regards to your applications. Be quick to reply to them!

  • You will be asked to appear for Personal Interviews or Video Interviews. Usually, the PIs are scheduled earlier on in the year. Therefore, keep yourself free during the first few months of the year, i.e. January to March or even April.

  • Depending on your performance, Universities will send out acceptance letters, to which you will be required to provide your answers.

  • The replies must be provided within the given deadline. As an applicant, you will be required to pay a non-refundable deposit as a confirmation of the offer letter.

Note: This period is crucial as well. This is the first time that you as an applicant will communicate with the University with regards to your applications and admission processes. Therefore, quick responses will be key towards grabbing the attention of the university.

5) Settle Your Finances and Visas

  • Among the more important tasks remaining, settling your finances and applying for student loans is crucial.

  • Research about the various scholarships and student financial aid available through the University itself.

  • Apply for the appropriate student loans that will help you cover up the tuition and accommodation expenses that you will face during your stay at the university.

  • The final key in the process is to prepare and apply for Student Visas. It must be noted that student visas may take time, therefore, prepare and apply for student visas as soon as possible.

Note: The final few steps in the admission processes are just as important as applying to the university. You must have the financial resources and Visa documents to be able to reach the country and commence your classes in the programme of your choice. Therefore, be thorough in this processes as mistakes here can be costly.

Thus, as per the timeline to begin your applications for your Study in Canada Venture, you must begin your processes a year before you actually start your undergraduate or postgraduate studies in Canada. The steps and processes involved in admission to a Canadian University are numerous and you will be required to be thorough in your methods.
