Interested in pursuing higher education in Canada? Then check out the timeline for January 2021 Intake in Canada. Canada's January Intake is the next best option for students who missed the September 2020 intake and do not wish to waste another year.

One of the most popular destinations for higher education among Indians, Canada offers admission to different degrees and programmes twice a year. The first intake of students in Canada takes place during September of an academic year, meanwhile, the second intake in Canada takes place in January of an academic year.

While most students are able to take admissions in the first intake for the academic year, few are unable to due to various reasons which can include delay documentation processes or release in scores and academic qualifications. The January 2021 Intake in Canada has been positioned as a means to allow students to still apply for admissions and not waste another year due to technical difficulties.

This year, as the COVID-19 pandemic spread all across the world, international admissions and the entire international education sector in different countries including Canada, took a major hit. This forced students to defer their plans to apply to either Winter or Spring Sessions, to apply for higher education abroad.

The January 2021 Intake in Canada is usually called as the Winter Intake and many students who missed out on the Fall Intake 2020 in Canada, can use this opportunity to continue their study abroad aspirations.

Research (April 2020 - June 2020)

One of the first steps that you will need to complete is research and find out the best college and universities for you. List out the possible universities in the world that you would like to enrol in and pursue a programme.

  • List down the universities and colleges that you desire and wish to pursue your higher education degree in.

  • If you are confused between which course to pursue, list down the possible degrees and programmes on offer that is similar to the programme you wish to pursue.

  • While checking out the courses, you must also look out for the different scholarships and financial aids offered by the university, as in most cases, international higher education can be heavy on the pockets.

Prepare and Attempt Standardised Tests (July - September 2020)

One of the more important documents that you will need to provide the university of your choice is the score sheets of different standardised tests. Standardised tests such as SATs, IELTS, TOEFL, GRE, GMAT, etc, are usually required by different universities across the world.

  • Prepare and apply for various standardised tests, especially for IELTS or TOEFL, which are English Proficiency Tests that are mandatorily required by different universities.

  • Some programmes and universities require their applicants to have attempted other standardised tests such as SATs, GMAT or GRE, among others as part of their admission requirements. Therefore, go through the admission requirements for the different courses you wish to pursue in the university of your choice.

  • You will need time to prepare for these tests as cut-offs and minimum score requirements of these tests are usually high. Therefore, prepare for the tests as early as possible and attempt the test as soon as possible.

  • In some cases, you may receive the results for the test after a few days, weeks or even months. Therefore, when you apply for the tests, keep in mind that you may need time before the deadline to receive the respective scoresheets.

  • For IELTS and TOEFL, candidates must register for the test at least a month before the test date.

  • For GRE and GMAT, candidates must register at least three months before the test date.

Note: Planning and scheduling your tests is crucial to your admission to a university or college in Canada. Therefore, when applying for the test ensure that you have enough buffer time to receive the test scores and send it to the University itself.

Complete the Application Forms  (September - December 2020)

After attempting the tests, you need to apply to the college or university you previously shortlisted. This should be completed before the stipulated deadline as any applications sent in after the deadline will be rejected.

  • Visit the official website of the university of your choice and fill out the application forms available under their admission page.

  • Enter all the necessary details and upload the necessary documents, as specified by the admission committee itself.

  • Ensure that the details that you have entered are correct and complete as per your knowledge. Rectify all mistakes and spelling errors that may have occurred during the application process before submitting the same.

  • Many colleges also require their applicants to submit letters of recommendation and essays along with the application form. Therefore, take a minimum of one month to acquire the letters of recommendation and structure and form the essays required by the university.

Your Statement of Purpose or essays, as specified by the university, must be properly structured and include the necessary details outlining your objectives and purpose of joining the programme. You will need over one month to complete and properly structure SOPs or Essays in a professional manner. Therefore, take help and submit the application forms with the necessary documents within the stipulated time.

5) Its Time to Reply (November 2020 - January 2021)

After submitting the application forms with the necessary documents, the universities and colleges will go through your application form, SOP or Essay and all other requisites, and classify you as qualified or unqualified for admissions. All communications in all cases will be made through emails and other modes of communications that have been registered in your name.

  • Be vigilant and keep yourself updated on all communication modes, i.e. email and mobile phones.

  • You will receive emails regarding your selection to the programme and the next steps you need to take in order to complete the admission process. In these, you may be required to participate in Personal Interviews or Video Interviews.

  • Keep yourself free and ready to participate in the respective interviews and selection processes, as your performance in these parameters will determine your admission to the programme and university.

  • There will be a given deadline to reply to the emails that you receive from the universities. Therefore, reply to these emails within the stipulated deadline.

Settle Your Finances (January 2021 - February 2021)

You have participated in the selection processes and have been selected for admissions to the programme. It is now time to complete the financial aspect of your admissions to the programme and university. These financial decisions need to be completed before you commence your studies in the respective universities.

  • After sitting for the Personal Interview or Video Interviews, the universities will shortlist and select the eligible students and communicate the relevant information to those selected.

  • Selected candidates will receive formal communications, informing them of their selection and the steps that they need to take in order to complete their admissions through an offer letter.

  • Candidates will be asked to pay a non-refundable deposit to the University, as specified by the university. The deposit will be considered as a confirmation of the offer letter and that you are ready to commence your education at the respective university.

  • Here, candidates will again be required to confirm their responses and pay the non-refundable deposit within a given deadline.

During this time, it is better to go through the scholarships and financial aids offered by the university. As international education does not come by cheap, you will need to apply for loans to meet the financial requirements. To reduce this burden, you can check out and apply to the different scholarships and financial aids available, thus, making your life easier as well.

Apply for Visas (January 2021 - February 2021)

Once you have provided your confirmation to the university by paying the non-refundable deposit, it is time for you to apply for Student Visas and other travel documentation processes. Each country requires international travellers to possess valid identification and travelling documentation to legally stay in the country.

  • Apply for visas and complete the application processes.

  • Visa applications and completion may take time, therefore, apply as soon as possible.

Once all the documentation processes have been completed, you will be ready for your higher educational degree in Canada. All you need to do is collect the necessary documents, pack your bags and travel and commence your higher education in the destination of your choice.
