Tie-Breaking Rule in India Post GDS Recruitment 2026
This is where age plays a very critical role. In case there are two or more candidates with a percentage that is equal to the correct percentage (within four decimal points), India Post then uses a tie-breaking system.
First tie-breaker: Age- Older candidates will have an advantage. When you are competing with an individual who has the same marks but is older to you, they he will be ranked higher in the merit list.
Second tie-breaker: Category and Gender Priority- If the age doesn’t break the tie then, the order of selection is as such - ST Female, SC Female, OBC Female, UR Female, ST Male, SC Male, OBC Male, UR Male.
This means that you and another applicant have the same marks and are of the same age, the category with which you have applied for the job and your gender would decide who is selected first.

Circle-Wise Merit Lists, Age Limits and Age Relaxations
You're not competing across India but you're competing within your postal circle. The circles make their own merit list. The intensity of competition from one circle to the other differs greatly. What may be an adequate percentage in one locality can be too little in another. You should find out what the cutoffs were last year in your own postal circle in order to fully judge your prospects.
The age limit is 18-40 years with relaxations: SC/ST (5 years), OBC (3 years), PwD (10 years), PwD+OBC (13 years) and PwD+SC/ST (15 years). These relaxations will get you a better chance during tie breaking where older candidates are favored.
Document Verification: Where Most Fail
Once the provisional merit list is published, the shortlisted candidates being called to verify their documents. Here, many of the candidates often get disqualified on the grounds of a mismatch of documents. Carry your Class 10th marksheet, certificates, Aadhaar card, caste certificate (when needed) and proof of your residence, should be original and must be the same as was mentioned during the application process. Any difference in this case results in disqualification.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Here are some mistakes that you should keep a check on while applying:
Provide marks where they are asked - If you have your class 10 marks with you then always provide the marks and don’t go for the grades. Grade conversion can lower your scores.
Neglecting subject requirement - Y ou should have studied Mathematics and English in Class 10th.
Incorrect postal circle choice - Select very wisely according to your choice of place to work. Once submitted this can not be changed.
Late application - The application to India Post GDS Recruitment 2026 is closing on 14th February 2026. The deadline to submit the application is February 16, 2026. Failure to do so in time can cost you a year.
It is equally important to understand the selection process rather than just getting good marks. And a lot of candidates that scored 85%+ are unsuccessful due to non-consideration of documentation or tie-breaking rules. The success will be dependent on how well you manage the whole process of application through document verification. Keep yourself updated and make sure that you don’t miss a thing.
