All About B.A Philosophy

Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy is a three-year undergraduate programme where students are taught about general and fundamental problems. During the study of B.A Philosophy, the students imbibe a very important quality - to be able to defend a point of view which seems or sounds reasonable. B.A Philosophy also teaches the students how to look at a particular thing from different perspectives which instigate the development of a liberal mindset. After having obtained the Bachelor's degree in Philosophy, the students realize an important thing - no viewpoint has an ultimate basis and is subject to the socio-political background.

History of Philosophy

Let us talk a little bit more about Philosophy and its origin. How the word came into existence, who were the early proprietors of philosophy, what the word meant back then etc.

The word Philosophy owes its origin to the word “Philosophia”, a Greek word that means - Love of Wisdom. During the initial days, Philosophy or Philosophia was associated with “the Academic Study of Everything”, i.e literally everything. By and by when the scholars started demarcating each field of study, Philosophy was associated with “a way of thinking about questions”. A philosopher may ask the same question which was asked during the nascent days of Philosophy and even today, a proper answer might not exist - which of course they don’t mind.

One important thing that Philosophy graduates must keep in their mind is that they do not possess a professional qualification. It allows them to join any job available in the market. True, it seems a Philosophy graduate have options like researching, teaching, writing etc but in reality, a Philosophy graduate can become a lawyer, management consultant, journalist, policy analyst, social worker, government employee, public relations officer etc.

Although there is a “Taboo” related to the subject which states that “Philosophy is not suitable for those looking for a money-making career” but the opening up of vacancies in Universities and colleges for Philosophers put an end to such speculations.
