How to Apply for Category Certificates for CAT Exam

Since the CAT 2020 notification has been released, the count down for the CAT exam has begun. The exam will be conducted on 29th November 2020 in online mode. The application form was uploaded on the official website of CAT 2020 on 5th August 2020. The last date to fill the application form was 23rd September 2020. You are advised to complete the application form before the deadline or you might lose your chance to appear for CAT 2020 entrance exam. Candidates belonging from any of the SC / ST / NC-OBC / PWD / EWS categories will have to attach their caste certificate while filling the application form. These certificates are proof that the candidate belongs to a particular category. The caste certificates will comprise some important information such as the name of the candidate, address of the candidate and his belonging category. How to Apply and Download the Category Certificates for CAT Exam 2020

You will have to register on the official website of CAT 2020 in order to download the caste certificate for CAT exam. The complete procedure to download the caste certificate is provided below.

  • Go to the website of CAT

  • Click on the reservation form and then proceed to download 

  • Fill all the necessary details such as name, category and address

  • Get the application form attested by the gazetted officer

  • Once done, attach the scanned copy of the form with the application form

  • Submit the application form

Importance of SC / ST / NC-OBC / PWD / EWS Certificates for CAT Registration 2020

It is necessary for the candidate belonging from any reserved category to attach his caste certificate along with the application form. The caste certificate will be required to confirm the category of the candidates. It must be noted that you will have to attach a scanned copy of the certificate along with the form while the original copy of the certificate will be required during the time of admission. 

What is the EWS Category for CAT Registration?

Candidates whose family income is not more than 8 lakh per annum and they do not fall under any reserved category are considered as EWS category. They will have to submit an Income and Asset Certificate issued by a Competent Authority in order to apply for reservation.

What is the NC-OBC Category for CAT Registration?

CAT 2020 offers 37% reservation to the NC-OBC or non-creamy layer of the OBC category. Candidates who satisfy the conditions provided below are eligible to apply for NC-OBC.

  • Group A/B employee of the central government

  • The annual income of the candidate should be at most 6 lakh

What is the PWD Category for CAT Registration?

There are three categories of disability i.e Hearing impairment, Low vision blindness and Locomotor disability or Cerebral Palsy. As per the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, candidates with at least 40% of a specified disability where the specified disability has not been defined in measurable terms and those whose disability has been defined under measurable teams are categories under PWD category.

All the IIMs, as well as the various government institutes of India, follow the reservation criteria decided by the Government of India. What is the reservation policy of CAT 2020? 

Each IIM has a reservation policy as per norms issued by the government and 64.5% of the total seats at IIMs are reserved. 27%, 15%, 10%, 7.5% and 5% of the seats are reserved for OBC, SC, EWS, ST and PwD candidates respectively.

Can I make changes to the CAT application form after submission?

IIMs open a CAT Application Form correction window for a limited period through which you can upload an updated photograph and signature (if necessary). If made any other mistakes in the CAT application form, you will have to inform the CAT helpdesk at cathelpdesk@iimcat.ac.in to make any corrections.

Is caste certificate necessary to fill the CAT application form? 

Yes, candidates who wish to apply for reserved seats at IIMs will have to submit a valid caste certificate. Any candidate who fails to submit a valid caste certificate will be considered for Unreserved / General seats only.
