Ever since the Indian Government reformed the national education policy, several changes have been made in the curriculum by the different state board authorities across the country. The number one change that is reflected in the various states is the conduct of board exams twice in one academic year. One of the major Education boards in India, CBSE, was the first Education Board to implement annual examinations twice in one academic year. Followed by CBSE, there is KSEAB, which has been conducting annual examinations thrice in one academic year from the 2023-24 session. This decision has led to the abolition of supplementary exams, which are conducted when a student fails to secure the minimum passing marks in the main exams.

This decision was taken to promote a stress-free environment. Students can retain their best scores out of the two exams conducted. MBOSE SSLC Exams Twice a Year

The Meghalaya Board of School Education will conduct the SSLC exams twice in one academic year, with the main exams to be conducted in February, and the second exam will be conducted sometime in May. Previously, MBOSE used to release the main exam result in June; however, this year they have decided to release the result early to gear up for the two-exam system from the next academic year. They have also decided to leave the “best of 5” rule behind, and instead of that, you are required to pass in all 6 subjects. Those who fail any subjects in the Main Examination are automatically eligible to reappear in the 2nd exams, with no limit on the number of subjects.

Benefits of Exams Twice a Year

Apart from the boards mentioned above, there are also other State Boards that are correctly planning and implementing this change from the next academic year. There are several advantages of conducting board exams twice a year, such as:

  • Lower Stress Levels: The decision to conduct board exams twice in one academic year was taken to lower stress levels among students. They will be able to prepare for the board exams at ease, keeping in mind the second phase, which provides them with an opportunity to improve their scores.
  • Elimination of Coaching Classes: One of the main reasons behind the board exams being conducted twice a year is to eliminate the need for coaching classes. The board exams will become easier, according to CBSE, and focus will be on holistic development.
  • Lower Stakes: When the board exams are conducted only once, there are high stakes on that one annual exam; however, now an additional chance will be given to the students to appear for the second phase, which means lower stakes on the main exams.
  • Best-of-Two Attempts: With the new system, students get an opportunity to retain the score of the exams in which they performed their best.
  • Chance of Improvement: Previously, it was almost impossible for students to appear for improvement exams. They could only do so by taking part in supplementary papers; however, this new system makes it fairly easier for students to improve their scores without any additional applications to be filled out.

With a lot more Educational Boards across India adopting the two-system annual exams, it is on its way to becoming a new norm. This system provides a lot of flexibility to the students, making it easy for them to appear for the second phase if they fail to appear for the first exam due to any emergency. Additionally, a lot more changes are made to the exams according to the NEP 2020, all of which favor the students.
