On August 20, 2023, BITS Pilani made the announcement of launching a new & innovative PhD programme that aims in developing various startups in order to resolve the different challenges faced in the business world
PhD-DRIVE, the programme announced by the college, stands for Deep-tech, Research, Innovative, Value generation, and Entrepreneurship. This programme welcomes students who have a knack science & technology as well as the desire to develop their startup. With this programme, students will gain the entrepreneurship course, required funding for developing the relevant product/service, and incubation programme, along with acquire support from BITS Pilani’s alumni network from business perspectives.
V. Ramgopal Rao, the Vice-Chancellor of BITS Pilani, stated that the PhD-DRIVE is their brainchild for transforming PhD degree holders into entrepreneurs. He also mentioned that they are targeting to initiate around 100 startups by the year 2030. All the PhD scholars, under this programme, would be in associated with different Centre of Excellences established by BITS Pilani. They would be offered a higher stipend as well as grant for their startup.
BITS Pilani is currently facilitating students to take a year off to develop their startups. This move is a way to boost entrepreneurship in India. As per their policy, if students plan to take a year off to create their startup full-time, their application would be routed to the dean for approval to walk shoulder-to-shoulder with the IITs that are constantly dominating the startup systems in our country. The institute devised the “BITS innovation and startup policy of 2023”, which would serve as a guide for the students to help them accomplish their entrepreneurial objectives via accurate resource planning while improving the already existing startups.
