How to Approach XAT 2026 Decision Making Questions with a Clear Mind

If you're preparing for XAT 2026 , you know that decision-making is what makes this exam different from others. These questions are meant to test the thought process of an individual in real workplace problems, an actual, useful skill for your career ahead. The good news? With the right approach to mastering DM questions, you can really score well in this section. Here is how you can do it-simple and effective ways to solve these questions calmly and confidently.

How to approach DM questions with a clear mind

Check here how you can approach dm questions with more accuracy and a clear mind:

1. Read the situation like a story

Take your time with the question. Read it slowly and put yourself in that situation. Are you one of a manager, team member, or company owner? Knowing your role can help you think better. Read it twice - first for an overall view, then read again for more details such as company policies or relationships among players.

2. Figure out what they're really asking

DM questions mix many problems together to confuse you. Your job is to find the main issue. Let me show you how you can do that:

What the question says

What they're really asking

"Your team member came late and the boss is angry. What do you do?"

Should you solve the boss's anger right now or fix why the team member is coming late?

"You saw your friend copying in the exam. Do you tell the teacher?"

Are they testing your honesty or how you handle friendships?

Once you have an idea of the real question, it becomes much easier to answer.

3. Don't pick answers based on your feelings

This is the position where each and every one goes wrong. Don't pick actually what YOU would do - rather, pick which would be the most proper action on the part of a good manager. Your own feelings don't come into play here. Think about:

Does this solve the problem now?

Will this stop the problem from happening again?

Is this fair to everyone?

Does this help the company and the people?

4. Pick the middle option

XAT usually loves balanced answers. Options that are too extreme are usually wrong most of the time. Look at this example for better understanding :

Type of option

Example

Right or wrong?

Too harsh

"Fire the person immediately"

Wrong

Too soft

"Ignore the problem completely"

Wrong

Balanced

"Talk to the person, understand their side, then decide"

Right

The correct answer usually shows you thought about everyone and found a fair solution.

5. Look for hidden clues

Sometimes the question casually tells you something important. Watch for these things :

Company rules mentioned anywhere

Is this the person's first mistake or fifth mistake?

How urgent is the problem?

What's the relationship between the people?

For example, "first mistake in 5 years" is very different from "third time this month" - your answer should change!

6. Don't let your personal beliefs decide

It's possible you're very honest and would report everything. Or perhaps, you value friendship so much that you never want to report anyone. Nevertheless, XAT doesn't care about your personal style. It wants fair and practical decisions. While practicing, try to choose options that appear balanced, even if that isn't what you personally would choose.

7. Keep ethics simple

When you see right vs wrong questions, don't overthink. XAT's ethics are basic:

  • Being honest is good
  • Cheating is bad
  • Be fair to everyone
  • Care about people's well-being

Do not carry on big moral debates in your own head; the truest answer, the fairest one, and the best answer for everyone is generally correct.

The secret to DM questions is reading and listening carefully, being calm, and thinking like a manager rather than yourself. Look for solutions that balance out for everyone and address the real issue. Practice each question because the more one practices, the easier it gets to pick out the correct answer from the pack.
