As per the eligibility rules, BPharm students in the 3rd year (pre-final year) whose results for the final 4th year will be announced before the MPharm admission begins can take the GPAT 2026 exam.

GPAT eligibility rule for 3rd year students

Pharmacy students in India follow a gradual process of growth. They study the BPharm course at the undergraduate level, then proceed to MPharm. But MPharm admissions don’t come easy. BPharm graduates have to take an entrance test if they want admission to MPharm programs. That national-level entrance test is GPAT (Graduate Pharmacy Aptitude Test). This exam secures admissions and helps students get financial support for their post-graduation. It qualifies you for AICTE postgraduate scholarships or stipends for up to INR 12,400 per month. If you have a long-term vision, you may consider taking this test early. But your eligibility as a 3rd year student might be a question. Let us clarify if you can and how.

Can 3rd Year Students Take GPAT 2026 Exam?

If we look at the official GPAT 2026 eligibility criteria , there are two important things mentioned.

  • Final-year (4th year) BPharm students whose results will be declared before MPharm admissions for 2026–27 are eligible.

  • Students appearing in the pre-final year (3rd year) exam of BPharm, whose 4th-year results will be declared before admissions for 2027–28, are also eligible to appear for GPAT 2026.

What It Means for 3rd Year Students

The authorities will not allow applicants to participate in the admissions process based solely on being in their 3rd year of study. It just implies that 3rd year students may only apply if they are scheduled to take their final examination in 2026. They should also complete their 4th year in time for MPharm admissions in 2027-28.

Current academic year (Dec 2025)

Can you apply for GPAT 2026?

Why/ Why Not

3rd year right now (2025–26 batch)

Not eligible

Because you will still be in the 3rd year when the exam happens in 2026. You will not finish the 4th year by the 2026–27 admission cycle.

Students who will be in 4th year in 2026–27

Eligible

They graduated in 2026. So their results are available before the 2026–27 admissions.

Students who will complete 4th year in 2027–28 (currently 2nd-year in 2025–26)

Eligible to take GPAT 2026

Because their 4th-year results will be available before 2027–28 admissions.

So, the bulletin gives early eligibility to you if your graduation matches the next admission year (2027-28). However, it’s not for students who are already in their 3rd year in 2025–26. Their graduation will match the 2026-27 admissions. So, the final-year results must be available before the exam year begins.

Rules for Appearing in GPAT 2026

You can appear early only if you’re in the final year of the GPAT 2026 exam cycle. Or, you must have completed BPharm before the MPharm admission year begins. If you’re in 3rd year BPharm in 2025–26, you will finish your 4th year in 2026–27. But the results will not come out before the 2026 admissions start. So it makes them ineligible.

Why is Final Year Status Important in GPAT 2026?

GPAT bridges undergraduate pharmacy learning with postgraduate study & admissions. Institutions and scholarships will consider your GPAT score for admission and funding, provided

  • They can verify your academic records before counselling.

  • They have your final year or graduation completion status records during the application or admission process.

If the third-year candidates of BPharm get permission for GPAT, the process of admission verification would be undermined. They are a year away from completing their course, so the scholarship eligibility has to wait till then. That’s why only final year students get permission.

What happens if an ineligible candidate applies for GPAT?

You won’t be able to continue the process if you are ineligible at any stage of GPAT. So, you can’t

  • Appear for the exam

  • Receive admission offers

  • Get considered for scholarships

Your candidature can also be cancelled if you provide incorrect academic status.

Roadmap for 3rd Students Appearing in GPAT

As a third-year student, you can take this roadmap for GPAT in the future:

Year 3 (Pre-Final)

Year 4 (Final Year)

  • Focus on core BPharm subjects

  • Begin GPAT syllabus overview

  • Solve basic MCQs to build a foundation

  • Intensify GPAT preparation

  • Complete the full syllabus

  • Take mock tests and sectional tests

  • Apply when eligible and register for the exam

So, to conclude, if you are a 3rd-year student whose final year results will be announced before MPharm course admission in 2027-28, you can apply. Third-year student in their pre-final year of BPharm cannot apply or take GPAT 2026. Only those in the final year whose graduation will finish before MPharm admissions start can apply. Before applying, the student must check the detailed eligibility criteria to avoid any hassle while taking the exam.
