Tips to Master Reading Comprehension in NIFT GAT 2026

Some of the important instructions to perform significantly well in Reading Comprehension in NIFT GAT 2026 have been provided below.

Strengthen your Foundation

Gain an understanding of the topics that the RC passages for NIFT GAT 2026 will be based on. They include literary analysis (where references will be given from classic texts), philosophical or ethical topics, fashion, art, and culture topics, environmental and social issues, abstract reasoning and application-based topics. Increase your reading stamina by going through the editorial and op-ed sections of newspapers like The Hindu or The Indian Express on a regular basis. Apart from that, skim through magazines related to art, design, fashion, and culture like Business of Fashion (BoF), Vogue or Harper's Bazaar, Artforum, their online articles, and different blogs related to Design like Dezeen, Design Milk, etc. Read as much non-fiction as possible on topics like design history, social psychology, or popular science that contains comprehensive, thorough, detailed, and knowledge-rich content, to improve your reading speed and vocabulary.

The essential books and guides for NIFT GAT RC preparation are as follows:

  • Oswaal Objective General English
  • Popular Master Guide NIFT (R. Gupta)
  • Word Power Made Easy by Norman Lewis
  • Lucent’s General English and Wren & Martin English
  • NIFT Entrance Exam Guide by Verma, D Mittal, or R. P. Datason
  • Arihant NIFT Entrance Exam Self-Study Guide & NIFT Navigator
Spend at least 15 minutes a day going through "Fashion-Specific" reading sources like the following:
  • "Sustainability" and "Technology" sections from The Business of Fashion (BoF)
  • Reports on "Market Trends" from Vogue Business
  • "Fashion" category from Dezeen for excellent design-logic cross-over
  • Fashion section in The Guardian for understanding the "Critical/ Editorial" tone
  • Streetwear & Pop Culture from Hypebeast

You can also refer to practice papers and online resources like the official NIFT sample question papers available on the official website.

Know the Changes Introduced in the NIFT GAT 2026 Exam

You need to shift your focus from intense critical reading to structural analysis since the comprehension passages have now grown in length from the year 2025. The difficulty level of vocabulary remains to be moderate. In 2025, the RC passages were longer, typically of 400-600 words, which caused mental fatigue and cognitive exhaustion in students by the time they reached the final 10 questions. Your ability to maintain focus under pressure is being tested in this section. Do not stick to 300-word short passages and practise longer sets of around 800 words to avoid panicking in the NIFT 2026 examination hall. Solve LSAT-style passages, read long-form essays from The New Yorker or Vogue Business, study longer articles of 700-800 words, and learn how you can make a summary of the central argument in just two sentences.

Focus more on questions related to "Statement-Conclusion" and "Author's Narrative Shift". Simple straighforward fact-based questions are being replaced by "Tone-transition" questions. Hence, your concern should not be what the author is saying but how the author's tone changed from the first paragraph to the last.

Know the Different Types of Questions Asked

The questions asked from different RC topics in the NIFT GAT exam can be segregated into a few categories. Questions based on the main idea require you to understand their primary purpose or what they are dealing with. The trickiest are the inference-based questions that ask what is being implicitly suggested but not directly stated. In fact-based questions, a specific detail or piece of information from the text is asked. The meaning of a particular word with respect to the passage is asked in vocabulary-based questions. For questions based on the author’s tone, you need to identify the author's attitude, whether it is critical, objective, or nostalgic. You may encounter the following types of RC passages in NIFT GAT 2026:

  • Inference-Based
  • Identifying the author's tone & attitude
  • Vocabulary-in-Context
  • Main Idea or Title-based
  • Fact-Verification

Practise Active Reading

Simply gliding over the text will not help! Go through the passages diligently, engage with the text, and focus on critical reading by highlighting the most important details, keeping a note of the key points, summarizing them mentally, and critically examining the content. Rather than merely reviewing or scanning through each paragraph passively, analyze the content for two minutes and conclude what is the main point of the paragraph. Identify the tone or attitude of the author whether it is critical, supportive, neutral, or sarcastic. The last step is to understand the one single idea or message that the author is trying to convey. Hence, it is crucial to practise a significant number of questions based on inference, tone, main idea, and details from sample papers and mock tests.

Develop a Proper Strategy to Tackle Each Passage

A systematic approach is required to deal with each passage effectively. Glance through the passage for about 30-60 seconds to comprehend its central theme, and the main idea and structure of each paragraph. Observe how the author has established connections between different paragraphs and try to draw the perfect conclusion.

Enhance your scanning skills to go through the entire passage rapidly, detect specific details and facts within the text and grasp its essence. To be able to answer detail-oriented and inference-based questions effectively and quickly, recognize keywords, important phrases, and transition words that point towards any major changes or arguments in the given passage.

After this, read the questions individually, go back to the given passage, and study the relevant sentences carefully to determine the exact answer for each question. For long or fact-based passages, read the questions first, but do not go through the options. After this, when you start browsing through the passage, you will easily be able to point out the answers you're looking for. Practise as many RC passages as possible and analyze them over the last 6-8 months before the exam.

Solve Mock Tests and Previous Year Question Papers

Consider the NIFT GAT previous year question papers your Bible or the greatest resource to ace reading comprehension and solve every English comprehension question from the last 10 years’ question papers. In this way, you will be able to gain deeper insights of the actual difficulty level, different topics from which the passages are given, and question types. Also, solve as many mock tests as possible under timed conditions (e.g., 25-30 minutes for 40 questions) to simulate the exam environment. If you come across a difficult passage or question, do not spend a lot of time solving it, rather skip it and move on.

The secret to improving your mistakes is maintaining an error log. After you have completed a mock test, do not just check your score but note down all the questions you got wrong and determine the reasons or root causes for which you got them incorrect. It could be vocabulary gaps, misreading a question, erroneous assumption or flawed conclusion, silly mistakes, or running out of time.
