Entrance exams required for AIIMS

AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences) is the most prestigious medical school in India. It is the top choice among aspirants for its academic excellence, infrastructure and scope. Every year, thousands of students apply for AIIMS, making the admission process highly competitive. Admission to MBBS programs across all AIIMS campuses is done through the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG). On the other hand, the gateway to PG courses in AIIMS is the Institute of National Importance Combined Entrance Test (INI-CET). If you are aspiring to study at AIIMS, you should be well aware of the various entrance exams required for admission in these institutes. This article overviews the eligibility criteria to sit for each of these exams and the pattern of question paper that is followed.

List of Entrance Exams Required for AIIMS Admission

Various programmes are offered to the students at AIIMS, such as undergraduate, postgraduate, super-speciality, and doctoral programs in medicine etc. For each of these degrees, a separate entrance exam is conducted. Here is a list of exams required for admission to the most popular courses in AIIMS:

  • NEET-UG conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) for admission to MBBS programs

  • INI-CET conducted by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi, for postgraduate programs (MD, MS, M.Ch., DM, MDS)

  • INI-SS conducted by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi, for super-speciality programs (DM, M.Ch., MD)

AIIMS MBBS Admission through NEET-UG

AIIMS used to conduct its own entrance examination, but from 2020 onwards, the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test - Undergraduate (NEET-UG) has become the sole entrance examination for MBBS admission at all AIIMS institutions across India.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Must have completed 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/ Biotechnology, and English.

  • Should be 17 years as of 31st December of the admission year.

  • The minimum qualifying marks are 50% for General and 40% for SC/ ST/ OBC.

Exam Pattern

  • MCQ-type questions

  • Questions are asked from Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and General Knowledge/ Logical Reasoning

  • 200 total questions, out of which 180 are to be attempted

  • Exam duration is 3 hours 20 minutes

AIIMS Delhi and other branches (such as AIIMS Bhopal, AIIMS Jodhpur etc.) offer MBBS seats via NEET-UG based on merit and counselling conducted by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC).

AIIMS Postgraduate (PG) Course Admission through INI-CET

For postgraduate programs like MD, MS, MDS, and DM (6 years), AIIMS New Delhi conducts the Institute of National Importance Combined Entrance Test (INI-CET) twice a year, in January and July.

Eligibility

  • Should have an MBBS/ BDS degree from a recognised institution

  • Completed a one-year internship

Exam Pattern

  • It will be a computer-based examination

  • The exam duration will be 3 hours

  • The question type is MCQ

  • Questions will be asked from Pre-clinical, Para-clinical, and Clinical subjects from the MBBS syllabus

AIIMS Super-Speciality Course Admission through INI-SS

For admission to DM, M.Ch., and other super-speciality programs, AIIMS conducts the Institute of National Importance Super-Speciality (INI-SS) examination.

Eligibility

  • MD/ MS/ DNB degree in the relevant speciality

Exam Pattern

  • The exam will be conducted in online mode

  • A computer-based test and a departmental assessment will be held, in some cases

  • 80% will be a written test, 20% will be a departmental assessment (if applicable)

AIIMS PhD Entrance Test for Doctoral (PhD) Programs

Admission to PhD programs at AIIMS is conducted through the AIIMS PhD Entrance Examination, held twice a year.

Eligibility

  • Postgraduate degree (MD/ MS/ MDS/ DM/ M.Ch/ M.Sc/ M.Biotech) with a minimum percentage.

Exam Pattern

  • Written test followed by an interview

  • The questions will be subject-specific and research methodology-based
