IIT Bombay Admission Process 2026

IIT Bombay admission follows separate pathways by programme. There is no single IIT Bombay application form for 2026 admission. Each programme requires candidates to first qualify in the relevant national exam, then participate in the corresponding counselling or selection process.

IIT Bombay BTech Admission Process 2026

BTech admission at IIT Bombay runs through a four-step sequence: JEE Main, JEE Advanced, JoSAA counselling, and then reporting. Every step is mandatory.

  1. Qualify JEE Main 2026 and rank in the top 2,50,000 (across all categories) — this is the gateway to JEE Advanced.
  2. Register and appear for JEE Advanced 2026. Students need to give both Paper 1 and Paper 2, as it is compulsory. Missing either paper means disqualification.
  3. Check JEE Advanced result. Secure a qualifying rank and also meet the Class 12 board marks requirement (75% in PCM for General/OBC/EWS; 65% for SC/ST/PwD).
  4. Register on JoSAA 2026 at josaa.nic.in using JEE Advanced credentials. Fill in your choice of IIT Bombay and preferred branch — fill all realistic options, not just your top pick.
  5. Lock choices before the JoSAA deadline. Mock allotment rounds (2 rounds) are released before actual seat allotment begins. Use these to gauge your options.
  6. Six rounds of seat allotment occur. After each round: either accept the seat and freeze (no further upgrades), accept and float (participate in upgrade rounds), or accept and slide (upgrade within the same institute). The JoSAA portal releases results online, so don't miss the acceptance window.
  7. Pay the provisional seat acceptance fee online within the JoSAA window to confirm your seat.
  8. Report to the IIT Bombay campus on the designated date for document verification, remaining fee payment, hostel registration, and academic enrollment. A student who doesn’t report to campus on time leads to seat cancellation.

IIT Bombay BDes Admission Process 2026

Admission to the 4-year Bachelor of Design (B.Des) program at IIT Bombay’s Industrial Design Centre (IDC) is conducted entirely through the Undergraduate Common Entrance Examination for Design (UCEED). B.Des admissions do not require JEE Main or JEE Advanced scores, and students from all academic streams (Science, Commerce, and Arts) are eligible to apply. Below is the complete step-by-step admission process for IIT Bombay BDes:

Step 1: Register and Appear for UCEED 2026

  • You must register for the UCEED 2026 exam on the official portal (uceed.iitb.ac.in).
  • The exam tests spatial ability, logical reasoning, observation, design sensitivity, and drawing skills. It consists of two parts:
    • Part A: Computer-based test (Numerical Answer Type, Multiple Select Questions, Multiple Choice Questions).
    • Part B: Pen-and-paper drawing/design test.

Step 2: Qualify for UCEED and Obtain a Rank

  • After the exam, you must secure a high enough score to make it to the UCEED rank list. As IIT Bombay is a highly competitive IIT, General category students typically need an All India Rank (AIR) in the Top 15 to 20 to secure a seat at IDC.

Step 3: Joint Seat Allocation Application

  • Qualifying for UCEED does not mean you are automatically admitted. Once you receive your UCEED scorecard, you must fill out the B.Des Joint Seat Allocation application.
  • Through this single portal, you apply to all participating IITs and rank them in your order of preference. You must put IIT Bombay as your 1 preference.

Step 4: Seat Allotment Rounds

  • The UCEED office conducts three to five rounds of seat allotment (typically between April and June).
  • Seats are allotted strictly based on your UCEED AIR, category, and the availability of seats.

Step 5: Seat Acceptance and Document Verification

  • If allocated a seat at IIT Bombay, you must pay a "Seat Acceptance Fee" online and "Freeze" your seat.
  • Final admission is confirmed after the physical verification of your Class 12 mark sheets and category certificates at the IIT Bombay campus before the Autumn semester begins in July 2026.

IIT Bombay MTech Admission Process 2026

MTech admission is through GATE score and COAP counselling. IIT Roorkee coordinates COAP for 2026-27.

  1. Hold a valid GATE score in a relevant discipline. GATE 2026 results were declared by IIT Guwahati in March 2026.
  2. Register on COAP (coap.iitk.ac.in) — mandatory for TA/TAP/RA/RAP category applicants. Results for these categories are uploaded on COAP, and candidates must log in to view and accept/decline offers.
  3. Apply online to IIT Bombay's MTech programme at acad.iitb.ac.in/admissions/masters/mtech. Upload GATE scorecard, degree certificates, category certificate (if applicable), and OBC-NC certificate (for financial year 2026-27).
  4. Attend written test or interview as per the department's schedule. TA/SW/IS/PS/IIT BTech category results are declared directly on IIT Bombay's website.
  5. Accept the offer on COAP within the specified window. Pay seat booking fee of INR 15,000 (General/OBC-NCL/EWS) or INR 7,500 (SC/ST/PwD).
  6. Report to IIT Bombay for document verification and final registration.

IIT Bombay MBA Admission Process 2026

MBA admission at SJMSOM, IIT Bombay, is a two-stage process — shortlisting based on CAT 2025 score, followed by a Personal Interview. The 2026-28 batch admission process has been completed. Check the eligibility for the MBA course, then start by applying at som.iitb.ac.in for admission in the MBA program.

Phase 1: Shortlisting for Personal Interview (PI)

First, applicants must meet the minimum CAT cut-offs. While the official minimum for the General category is usually 90 percentile (with 75 in each section), the actual competitive cut-off to secure an interview call often ranges between the 97th to 99th percentile.

If you clear the cut-off, your profile is evaluated to generate a PI shortlist based on the following weightages:

IIT Bombay MSc Admission Process 2026

Admission to the M.Sc. programs at IIT Bombay for the 2026 academic session is conducted entirely through the Joint Admission Test for Master's (IIT JAM) 2026. Below is the complete step-by-step admission process for IIT Bombay MSc:

Step 1: Apply and Appear for IIT JAM 2026

  • Registration: You must register for the IIT JAM 2026 exam through the official JAM Online Application Processing System (JOAPS) portal.
  • Examination: Appear for the computer-based test in your respective subject (e.g., Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biotechnology).

Step 2: Qualify the Exam

  • Once the results are declared, you must clear the official cut-off for your category to be featured on the All India Rank (AIR) merit list.
  • Note: Because IIT Bombay is highly sought after, you generally need an AIR within the Top 30 to 60 (for the General category in popular subjects) to secure a seat.

Step 3: Apply for Centralised Counselling (JOAPS)

  • Qualifying the JAM exam does not mean you are automatically admitted. You must separately apply for admission through the JOAPS portal.
  • During this phase, you will fill out your academic details and submit your program and institute choices. To secure a seat at IIT Bombay, you must list it as your absolute top preference.

Step 4: Participate in Seat Allocation Rounds

  • The organising institute will release four admission lists (seat allotments) between May and July 2026.
  • If you are allotted a seat at IIT Bombay in any of the rounds, you will be given three options:
    • Accept and Freeze: You accept the seat at IIT Bombay and do not wish to participate in further rounds for higher preferences.
    • Accept with Upgrade: You accept the seat but wish to be considered for a higher preference in subsequent rounds (if IITB was not your first choice).
    • Reject and Quit: You decline the allotted seat and exit the admission process.

Step 5: Pay the Seat Booking Fee & Verify Documents

  • Once you choose "Accept and Freeze," you must pay the Seat Booking Fee online to confirm your provisional admission.
  • Final Reporting: You must physically report to the IIT Bombay campus. Here, you will undergo final document verification (submitting original degree certificates, mark sheets, and category certificates) and pay the remaining semester fees to officially begin your Autumn Semester.

IIT Bombay PhD Admission Process 2026

Getting admission in IIT Bombay PhD program is a multi-stage process that evaluates your academic foundation and research aptitude. Here is the complete step-by-step admission process for the Autumn Semester 2026.

Step 1: Select Your Admission Category

When applying, you must choose the category under which you are seeking admission, as this determines your financial support and responsibilities:

  • Teaching Assistantship (TA): You receive an institute stipend (INR 37,000 to 42,000/month) in exchange for 8 hours/week of teaching assistance.
  • Fellowship Award (FA): You are funded by an external agency (e.g., CSIR-JRF, UGC-JRF).
  • Sponsored (SW) / External (EX): You are a working professional sponsored by your employer or an R&D lab, and you do not receive financial aid from the institute.

Step 2: Submit the Online Application

  • The application portal typically opens in late March.
  • You must apply online through the official IIT Bombay academic portal (acad.iitb.ac.in).
  • Crucial Requirement: Most departments (especially Humanities, Design, and interdisciplinary centers) mandate that you upload a Statement of Purpose (SOP) and a detailed Research Proposal (1,000–1,500 words) outlining your intended area of research.

Step 3: Departmental Shortlisting

  • After the IIT in Mumbai application deadline, individual departments and centres review the applications.
  • They generate a shortlist based on your academic record, GATE/JRF scores, and the quality/alignment of your research proposal with the department's available faculty expertise.

Step 4: Written Test and/or Personal Interview

This is the most critical phase of the selection process. Shortlisted candidates are called for evaluation.

  • Written Test: Many engineering and science departments conduct a written test to evaluate core technical competency and analytical skills.
  • Personal Interview (PI): Candidates who clear the written test (or are directly shortlisted) face a faculty panel. The interview focuses heavily on your fundamentals, your master's thesis/projects, and your submitted research proposal. You must demonstrate a clear understanding of your research methodology and literature.

Step 5: Final Selection & Offer Acceptance

  • Departments compile a final merit list based on your performance in the written test and interview.
  • If selected, you will receive an offer letter. You must log in to the portal, pay the admission fee, and accept the offer before the given deadline to confirm your seat for the July 2026 commencement.

Most Commonly Question Asked

Can I change my JoSAA choices after locking them?
No. Once you lock your preferences on the JoSAA portal, or if they auto-lock after the deadline passes, they cannot be modified under any circumstances. Always double-check your branch order before confirming.
How does COAP work for MTech seat allocation?
COAP is not an application portal but a common platform where all IITs upload their MTech admission offers. You must register on COAP to view and accept offers, but apply to IIT Bombay separately.
Do I need a separate application for IIT Bombay BTech?
No. You do not apply directly to IIT Bombay for undergraduate engineering programs. All seat allocations are handled centrally through the JoSAA portal, based exclusively on your finalized JEE Advanced All India Rank.

IIT Bombay BDes Admission 2026

IIT Bombay BDes admission for 2026 is through UCEED 2026. IIT Bombay is the organising institute for UCEED 2026. UCEED 2026 qualified candidates register for the B.Des Joint Seat Allocation process for seat allotment. Students can opt to convert their 4-year degree into a 5-year Dual Degree (BDes + MDes) at the end of their third year by maintaining a strong academic performance (CPI) during their first three years. The conversion is also subject to the availability of seats in the respective design specialisations.

If a student decides they do not want to commit to a Master's degree, or if they fail to meet the required CPI criteria to transition to the Dual Degree phase, they are not left empty-handed. Provided they have completed all the mandatory credit requirements for the undergraduate coursework, they will successfully graduate with a standard 4-year B.Des Degree.

Students admitted to the B.Des program complete a holistic foundation during the initial semesters and later choose electives to specialize in fields such as Industrial Design, Visual Communication, Animation Design, Interaction Design, and Mobility and Vehicle Design.

Why Do Students Choose IIT Bombay?

IIT Bombay consistently draws the best JEE Advanced ranks in the country, especially for CSE. Students who clear the top 66 JEE Advanced ranks almost always prefer IIT Bombay CSE over other institutions. But it's not just about rankings.

The placement record is a strong pull. In 2024-25, the average package reached INR 23.5 LPA with over 22 offers exceeding INR 1 Crore. International offers came from the USA, Japan, Singapore, and Europe, with companies like Google, Apple, Microsoft, TSMC, and McKinsey recruiting on campus. The 2025-26 season opened with the highest package of INR 1.48 Crore (Da Vinci), and the season continues.

The campus infrastructure adds to it. The 545-acre campus sits between Powai and Vihar lakes, with 21 hostels, dedicated labs, a central library, swimming pools, and sports facilities. Being 15 km from the international airport makes Mumbai a practical choice for students seeking internships in industry hubs.

Research culture is another differentiator. Over 700 faculty members, 35 interdisciplinary centres, and a QS 129 global ranking (2026) mean that students who want to pursue postdoctoral work abroad or publish research find robust institutional support. IIT Bombay was designated an Institution of Eminence in 2018.

For design students, the IDC School of Design is one of a handful of IIT design schools in the country — students are admitted via UCEED for BDes.

Students from reserved categories find IIT Bombay accessible both financially (full tuition waiver for SC/ST/PwD) and academically (dedicated support through the SC/ST Cell at scstcell.iitb.ac.in).

Dear Student,

We think that you have mistaken Mohammed Sahil Akhtar for Shoaib Akhtar, as per the records of the JEE Advanced exams; Md. Sahil Akhtar took JEE Advanced 2023 and secured a 99th rank. However, Akhtar dropped the vision of getting into IIT during counselling to pursue a double major in computer science and physics at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology). He realised the opportunity to get into IT for research after taking the IOAA Olympiad in Georgia. Sahil is from Kolkata and completed his intermediate from Delhi Public School (DPS), Ruby Park, and he appeared for the JEE main 2023 for the April session. We hope that we have answered your query successfully. Stay tuned to CollegeDekho for the latest updates related to JEE Main 2025 and JEE Advanced 2025. We wish you success in your future!
