Most Commonly Question Asked

What is the lowest rank to get IIT Bombay?
In 2025, the absolute lowest General category (gender-neutral) closing rank for IIT Bombay was 8,343 for the 4-year BS in Applied Geophysics. For General female candidates, the supernumerary quota extended the cutoff up to a rank of 13,761 for the same program.
What are the cutoff marks for IIT Bombay?
Marks fluctuate annually based on exam difficulty. Historically, securing the top 66 rank for General CSE requires scoring 280–300+ marks out of 360. To merely enter IIT Bombay (e.g., BS Applied Geophysics at rank 8,343), approximately 115–130 marks are required.
Can I get IIT with a 20,000 rank in JEE Advanced?
For the General category, securing an IIT with a 20,000 All India Rank (AIR) is highly unlikely, as seats generally close around 15,000–16,000. However, SC, ST, or OBC-NCL candidates can successfully secure seats in newer IITs using their respective category ranks.

IIT Bombay BTech JEE Advanced Cutoff 2026 (Expected)

Looking ahead to 2026, BTech cutoffs at IIT Bombay are poised to climb 5-8% in closing ranks, with CSE likely remaining the toughest at around 70 for General, fuelled by an anticipated 2.6 lakh JEE qualifiers and sustained tech hiring frenzy. Projections from 2025 trends suggest Electrical will draw even higher competition, potentially tightening 6% from this year due to EV sector growth, while Civil may see a 3% relaxation from infrastructure policy lags.

  • Exam Evolution: JEE Advanced 2026 may introduce more application-based questions, favouring CSE aspirants with 260+ marks.
  • Seat Projections: Minor 2% increase in OBC seats could ease pressure on reserved categories by 5 ranks.
  • Global Trends: Rising international collaborations may boost the demand for Aerospace Engineering.
  • Overall, specialisations in BTech like Aerospace Engineering could face 4% rank inflation

Factors Affecting IIT Bombay Cutoff 2025

IIT Bombay cutoff each year is determined by a set of interconnected factors — understanding them helps you gauge how 2026 cutoffs might move:

  • Number of JEE Advanced qualifiers: More qualifiers increase competition for top IITs, tightening cutoffs for in-demand branches like CSE and Electrical Engineering.
  • Difficulty of JEE Advanced: An easier paper results in higher average scores, which can push closing ranks lower (i.e., more competition). A tougher paper may relax cutoffs slightly.
  • Seat matrix: IIT Bombay's total BTech seat count and per-branch distribution directly sets how far the closing rank can stretch. Any seat additions in a branch lower the cutoff.
  • Student preference patterns: Branches like CSE and Electrical consistently attract the highest-ranked candidates, keeping their cutoffs tight regardless of other factors.
  • Category-wise reservation: SC/ST/OBC-NCL/EWS reservations and supernumerary female seats create separate pools. Reservation norms per the Government of India are fixed at 27% OBC-NCL, 15% SC, 7.5% ST, and 10% EWS.
  • Round-wise withdrawals: Students who receive better allotments in later rounds or opt for other institutions return seats. This is why some branches show relaxing cutoffs in Rounds 5 and 6.
  • Previous year trends: JoSAA uses historical cutoff data to calibrate seat allotment rounds. Candidates with ranks near previous-year closing ranks have the best shot at borderline branches.

Dear Student,

We think that you have mistaken Mohammed Sahil Akhtar for Shoaib Akhtar, as per the records of the JEE Advanced exams; Md. Sahil Akhtar took JEE Advanced 2023 and secured a 99th rank. However, Akhtar dropped the vision of getting into IIT during counselling to pursue a double major in computer science and physics at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology). He realised the opportunity to get into IT for research after taking the IOAA Olympiad in Georgia. Sahil is from Kolkata and completed his intermediate from Delhi Public School (DPS), Ruby Park, and he appeared for the JEE main 2023 for the April session. We hope that we have answered your query successfully. Stay tuned to CollegeDekho for the latest updates related to JEE Main 2025 and JEE Advanced 2025. We wish you success in your future!
