Candidates seeking admission in top NLU (National Law University) must be aware of the seat matrix of the college. Check out the statistics of reserved seats here.

Total NLU Seats in India

CLAT is conducted every year in order to grant admission to the candidates in the undergraduate and postgraduate courses offered at NLUs and other institutes/ colleges accepting CLAT scores. NLUs or the National Law Universities grant reservation of seats for candidates falling under various categories. Each NLU has separate CLAT reservation policies. The reservation criteria are considered post-CLAT 2021 result declaration and seat allotment or counselling process of the university.

Once the result is declared, the CLAT 2021 cut off will be announced and NLUs will conduct counselling processes in order to provide admission to the eligible candidates. Mentioned below are the categories that are considered for reservation seats during the process of admission.

Categories for Reservation of Seats at NLUs

The seat matrix for Dharmashastra National Law University (DNLU), Jabalpur, Chanakya National Law University (CNLU), Patna and, Dr B R Ambedkar National Law University (DBRANLU), Sonepat has been changed from 2020. As per the revised seat matrix, there is now an Economically Weaker Section category in the seat reservation of UG courses for DNLU and CNLU. For DBRANLU, there is "Deprived Scheduled Castes of Haryana" in the UG courses seat reservation.

Listed ahead are the domains that fall under the reservation category. Candidates need to take a look at the list in order to adhere to the reservation policies of the NLUs.

  • Scheduled Tribe (ST)

  • Scheduled Caste (SC)

  • Other Backward Categories (OBC)

  • State Quota for the candidates in which NLU is located

  • Physically Disable Candidates (PwD)

  • Foreign National Candidates/NRI

  • Kashmiri Migrants

  • Candidates belonging from the North Eastern States

NLU Seat Break-up for UG & PG Courses

NLUs segregate the seats as per the category of the candidates. The total number of seats offered for admission in 2021 is around 2,175. Mentioned below are the seat categories on which the distribution is done.

  • The All India Seats for UG programmes are 1,308.
  • The total number of seats offered to the candidates of the state where the NLUs are located is 621.
  • The number of seats available for the special category is 325.

Reservation of Seats in NLUs

Candidates seeking admission through CLAT in any of the NLUs are required to be aware of the segregation of seats so as to claim their candidature. Each university has a different set of reservation policies. Depicted below in tabular form is the reservation of seats in NLUs as per the university norms and policies.

1. National Law School of India University, Bangalore (NLSIU) Reservation Policy

Earlier the capacity of the BA LLB (Hons.) & LLM programme at NLSIU was 80 and 50 respectively. However, from 2020 onwards, the university has revised the seat matrix. The updated reservation at NLU Bangalore has been explained below.

Note: It is to be noted that 2 seats in Business Law and 1 seat in Human Rights Law or 5% seats out of the total seats shall be reserved horizontally for the PwD candidates. Also, Foreign Nationals will be admitted directly to the institute based on their performance in the qualifying examination, command over the English language and overall academic record. NLSIU will provide preference to the candidates from SAARC and other countries.

Note: Horizontal reservation shall be applicable for female candidates for 32 seats to LLB (Hons.) course.

  • 5% horizontal reservation shall be applicable for SAP (Specially Abled Person). It implies that 5 seats will be available for LLB and 3 seats for LLM course.

  • 15 seats are allocated to the Foreign Nationals for LLB course out of which 8 seats are for non-SAARC countries and 7 seats are for SAARC countries.

  • 10 seats are provided to the Foreign Nationals for LLM course out of which 5 seats are for the candidates from non-SAARC countries and 5 seats are for the candidate from SAARC countries.

3. The National Law Institute University, Bhopal (NLIU)

Out of the 63 seats for all India General candidates, 25 seats are reserved for the aspirants possessing a domicile certificate of the State of Madhya Pradesh.

  • 2 seats are reserved for the candidates of Jammu and Kashmir.

  • As per Madhya Pradesh Lok Seva Arakshan Adhiniyam, 1994, through horizontal reservation 30 seats are reserved for women.

  • 5 seats are reserved horizontally for SAP (Specially Abled Persons)

LLM-

  • 2 seats are horizontally reserved for candidates of SAP category.

  • 30% of the total seats are reserved for the women candidates

  • 2 seats from each specialisation for LLM are reserved for aspirants carrying domicile certificate of Madhya Pradesh.

For LLM- The minimum intake capacity of the program is 80. The LLM programme will only commence if there are a minimum of 10 students. The reservation for NLUJ is as follows.
