Calcutta University conducted the fourth semester exams for BCom, BA, BSc, and Bachelor of Laws courses as per the CU exam window. The University of Calcutta received requests from the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) to postpone the tests due to the exam falling on the foundation day of the student body. Despite the requests and protests made against the CU exam window, the exam was conducted for over 90% of candidates. The exams were held in two halves on Thursday, August 28, across 82 colleges in the state.

CU Exam Window Postponement

The primary reason for the requested changes in the CU exam window was due to the fact that one of the exam dates fell on the foundation day of the TMC's student wing. Since the foundation day is celebrated with large processions and gatherings, it was claimed by the organization that conducting the exam on August 28 will create major traffic disruptions, causing inconvenience to thousands of examinees and affecting their ability to commemorate the day.

As per the Special Syndicate meeting on the matter, a unanimous decision was made against postponing the exam date, and the Higher Education Department representative at the last Syndicate meeting was informed accordingly. The requests for exam postponement were denied by the university officials because similar requests could arise in the future from other political groups if this one were entertained. Despite the row regarding the CU exam window postponement, over 30,000 candidates appeared for the exam on Thursday, August 28, across 82 colleges in West Bengal.

CU Vice Chancellor on CU Exam Window Row

Shanta Dutta, who is the officiating vice chancellor of Calcutta University, stated to reporters, "The Special Syndicate meeting of CU has already unanimously decided not to postpone the exam scheduled for August 28. What is special about August 28? Is it a national holiday?". As per the vice chancellor, it was the duty of the administration to ensure that no candidate faces problems reaching the exam centers on time and then returning home. She also added, "We have already written to Kolkata Police and the state transport department to facilitate safe and timely travel for 30,000 candidates. It is the state’s duty to ensure that students are not inconvenienced."

Comments were made by the TMCP state president stating that Shanta Dutta’s decision was impartial, and political rivalry played a role in this decision. As per the TMCP state president, the exams were deliberately scheduled on the TMCP's foundation day.
