How to Get Admission in IIT after 12th Commerce and Arts: Colleges, Courses, Eligibility, Seats and Fees

Right from its establishment in the year 1951, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) has earned tremendous goodwill and has made itself more of a brand than just a mere institute. With an excellent placement record and a marvellous alumni network, IITs are rightly considered to be the premier engineering institutes in India.

Getting admission to one of these best engineering colleges in India is like a dream-come-true for every engineering aspirant and their struggle for this starts from the school level. Students looking forward to admission in these institutes have to appear for the JEE Mains and the JEE Advanced entrance examinations and once they clear these exams, they are further shortlisted for one of the Top Colleges of IIT in India on the basis of their ranks. But there is enough information already available about the Bachelor of Technology (BTech) and Master of Technology (MTech) courses at IITs and this article does not go into that.

While IITs have been primarily set up for engineering courses, they have added their own Humanities and Social Sciences, and Management departments over the years and now students can take admission into Design, MA, and MBA programmes at IITs. This widening in the scope of education offered at IITs has, in turn, benefited students from the Commerce, Arts and Humanities streams, who can now look to India's most revered institutes for their higher education.

In this article, we explore some such IIT courses which can be pursued by Commerce, Arts or Humanities students.

Bachelor of Design (BDes) at IITs

Bachelor of Design (BDes) is a four-year undergraduate programme that teaches the fundamentals of design principles, images, photography etc. BDes programmes are designed to promote visualisation and creativity in an individual by promoting a candidate to ideate and, often, think unconventionally. It is one of the courses that can be pursued after 12th in Commerce or Humanities.

List of IITs Colleges offering BDes

While there are four* institutes accepting a BDes admission via UCEED, candidates from Commerce, Arts and Humanities background are eligible to apply for the following three.

          BDes Admission at IITs

BDes admissions at IITs are done via the Undergraduate Common Entrance Examination for Design (UCEED). UCEED is a national-level design entry exam conducted by IIT Bombay. The exam covers the following subjects:

          • Visualisation and Spatial Ability
          • Observation and Design Sensitivity
          • Analytical and Logical Reasoning
          • Design Thinking and Problem Solving
          • Language and Creativity
          • Environmental and Social Awareness

          BDes Eligibility Criteria at IITs

Candidates must ensure that they fulfil the following eligibility criteria for UCEED before they apply.

          • The candidate must not be older than 24 years
          • The candidate must have completed class 12th from a recognized board
          • The candidate must have completed class 12th in the same year or previous year as the year of taking UCEED (i.e. if a candidate appears for UCEED in 2023, he/she should have qualified class 12th in 2022 or 2023).
