What does CUET Normalization mean?

Common University Entrance Test will be held on multiple days, in two sessions per day. Aspirants will come across a different set of questions in every session which means despite all efforts of maintaining equivalence, the difficulty level in question papers may not be the same. A few of the aspirants may end up attempting a comparatively easier set of questions when compared to other sets. The applicants who appeared for the comparatively tougher exam are likely to acquire lesser marks than the ones who attempted the easier questions.

In order to overcome and avoid such a situation, the CUET Normalization Process based on Percentile Score will be used for making sure that candidates are neither disadvantaged nor benefitted due to the difficulty level of the entrance test. The sole objective of the CUET 2022 Normalization Process is to identify the true merit of the candidates and provide a level field for everyone.

What does CUET Percentile Score mean?

The percentile scores of CUET are based on the relative performance of all those aspirants who appear for the entrance test. The marks obtained by candidates are changed on a scale ranging from 0 to 100 for each session. The CUET percentile indicates the percentage of candidates that have either scored equal to or less than that specific percentile in that exam.

For example: The topper of each session will obtain the same CUET percentile i.e. 100 as he/ she has scored the highest marks and scores of other candidates are equal or lower than him/ her.

Step-by-Step CUET 2022 Normalization Process

CUET 2022 Normalization Process is an established practice to compare scores obtained by candidates across multi-session papers. For the Common University Entrance Test normalization procedure, NTA shall use the following percentile equivalence method:

Step 1: Distribution of Candidates in two Shifts

All the aspirants who appeared for the exam will be distributed into 2 shifts randomly to avoid bias. The two shifts can be held on multiple days or the same day. For instance, Session 1: Day Shift 1 and Session 2: Day 1 Shift 2.

If NTA wishes to increase the number of sessions/ shifts, the candidates will be divided accordingly into every shift. Given below is a table provided by the conducting body as an example of the distribution of candidates into 4 shifts:

Session

Day/ Shift

No. of CandidatesMarks
AbsentAppearedTotalHighestLowest
Session 1Day 1 Shift 139742801231986335-39
Session 2Day 1 Shift 261893254138730346-38
Session 3Day 2 Shift 16036413264736233149
Session 4Day 2 Shift 29074406034967733244
Total (Session 1 to Session 4)2527314248216775534649

Step 2: Result Preparation for each Session

The next step is the preparation of the result. The CUET result 2022 will be formulated in the form of Raw Scores and Percentile Score from Total Raw Scores. NTA will consider the percentile score for identifying the merit of the candidate.

How to Calculate CUET 2022 Percentile Scores

CUET percentile will be calculated based on the ranks. As mentioned above, it is the percentage of the candidates (in the same session) who have scored equal to or lower than the candidate. The higher the rank of an aspirant, the higher is his/ her percentile scores. The CUET percentile score will range from 0 to 100 and will be calculated using the following formula:

CUET 2022 percentile score = 100 x {(Number of candidates who appeared in the ‘Session’ with raw score either equal to or less than the candidate)/ (Total number of candidates who appeared in the session)}

The percentile scores will be calculated up to seven decimal places in order to reduce ties and avoid the bunching effect. Here are a few effects of calculating the CUET percentile score separately for each session:

  • All the aspirants in the same session obtaining the same raw score will automatically get the same percentile.
  • If two or more candidates in different shifts obtain the same raw score, they are likely to get different percentiles.
  • All aspirants with the highest raw scores in their respective sessions will be awarded the 100 percentile.
  • All aspirants with the lowest raw scores in their respective sessions will acquire close to 0 percentile. It will completely depend on the number of candidates who appeared for the exam.

Let us try to understand the bottom two points in a better way through the examples presented by NTA.

Highest Raw Score & CUET Percentile Score

According to NTA, the normalized CUET percentile score for all the highest raw scores will be 100 for their respective shifts. Captured in the table below is an example of the highest raw scores obtained in an exam with 4 shifts:

SessionTotal Candidates who AppearedHighest Raw Score (HRS)Candidates who either scored equal or less than HRSPercentile ScoreRemarks
Session 12801233528012100.00000 [(28012/28012)x100]

i.e. all the HRS would be normalized to 100 percentile scores for their respective session

Session 23254134632541100.00000 [(32541/32541)x100]
Session 34132633141326100.00000 [(41326/41326)x100]
Session 44060333240603100.00000 [(40603/40603)x100]

Lowest Raw Score & CUET Percentile Score

The exact percentile score will be somewhere around 0 for the lowest raw scores and it will completely depend on the number of aspirants who appeared for the exam session. Given below is an example of the lowest raw scores obtained in an exam with 4 shifts:

SessionTotal Candidates who AppearedLowest Raw Score (LRS)Candidates who either scored equal or less than LRSPercentile ScoreRemarks
Session 128012-3910.0035699 [(1/28012)] x 100

i.e. Percentile score of all the LRS is different i.e. Percentile score depends on the total number of candidates who have taken the exam for their respective sessions

Session 232541-3810.0030730 [(1/32541)] x 100
Session 341326-4910.0024198[(1/41326)] x 100
Session 440603-4410.0024629 [(1/40603)] x 100

Step 3: NTA Score Compilation and Result Preparation

This is the final step where CUET percentile scores for all the sessions are merged and termed as the NTA score. The score will be used for further processing for deciding the allocation and compilation of results.
