NCHMCT JEE is expected to be conducted on 14 May 2023, but there is a possibility that the exam might be cancelled or postponed. This article provides an insight into what to expect in case of cancellation or postponement of NCHMCT JEE 2023.

Impact on Hotel Management Admissions if NCHMCT JEE is Cancelled

COVID-19 has completely reshaped the state of education in the country. Concerns for the safety of the students are rising with the rising number of COVID positive cases in India. The CBSE Class 12th exams have been cancelled, which has come as a relief to parents and students alike across the country. However, due to this, the demand of students to cancel many other entrance exams such as JEE Main, NEET, NCHMCT JEE etc. has also increased.

NCHMCT JEE is conducted for admission to the undergraduate courses in Institutes of Hotel Management (IHMs) and other hotel management colleges in India. The exam is usually conducted in April but it has currently been postponed for a later date. As per NCHMCT, the exam will be conducted soon but no specific date has been provided till now. Neither has NCHMCT provided any update regarding the cancellation of the exam.

In the present scenario, students must assume that the exam will be conducted at a later date this year. However, it is important to understand how the hotel management admission process in India will be impacted in case NCHMCT JEE gets cancelled or postponed.

Given below are the latest dates for NCHMCT JEE as released by the conducting body. Currently, the exact dates for the exam have not been announced.

Impact of NCHMCT JEE Cancellation on Students

NCHMCT JEE is an important national exam in India. Thousands of students prepare for the exam every year. Students work hard on their preparation strategy for NCHMCT JEE to ensure that they get a good score, which would help them get admission to a top hotel management college in India such as IHM Delhi, IHM Mumbai etc.

Cancellation of NCHCMT JEE 2023 will have a major impact on the students who have invested 6 - 8 months in serious preparation. It will waste their efforts and decrease morale. Plus, some students focus more on getting a good score in NCHM JEE 2023 rather than class 12th marks. Such students will face a very tough choice.

Furthermore, if NCHMCT JEE 2023 stands cancelled, students, who would otherwise get a standardised score based on the Normalisation of NCHM JEE process, will be adjudged basis their merit based on Class 12 standardised marks. This may be a big blow to students who had prepared well in advance for the NCHM JEE exam. They will either have to take admission into the best possible college this year or will have to drop the year to aim for a better college in 2023 hotel management admissions.

In such a scenario, there are chances that many students might face mental health issues and anxiety about their career prospects. The students who find themselves facing such issues should stay in touch with their parents and teachers. Additionally, they should seek career counselling to clear their doubts and to make confident choices about their future career prospects.

NCHMCT JEE Scoring Pattern

The disappointment that students might face in the event of cancellation of NCHMCT can be understood by taking a look at its exam pattern and scoring. The following sections are a part of the NCHMCT JEE exam:

  • Numerical Ability and Analytical Aptitude

  • Reasoning and Logical Deduction

  • General Knowledge & Current Affairs

  • English Language

  • Aptitude for Service Sector

The syllabus of NCHMCT JEE is quite different as compared to Class 12th syllabus. Core subjects such as Science, Commerce, traditional Mathematics are not a part of the exam. The story repeats itself with other hotel management exams as well.

For eg. the sections in WB JEHOM are English, GK, Elementary Maths and Reasoning. In MAH BHMCT CET, the sections are English, GK and Reasoning. The difference is obvious to any Class 12th student aspiring for admission to a hotel management college.

Students who find their aptitude and skillset weak in these core subjects rely on getting a good score in the exam for getting into a good college. These students might not be able to get a good score in Class 12th but may have a good aptitude for the service sector, good communication and analytical skills, and possess all the necessary skills to be successful in the hospitality stream.

Impact of NCHMCT JEE Postponement on Students

Another possibility is that NCHMCT JEE 2023 will be postponed. The exam has already been postponed from April to the end of July (tentatively). Students have had to face major issues due to postponing the exam.

On the one hand, exam postponement provides more time for students to prepare. On the other hand, postponing NCHMCT JEE 2023 further will cause problems in the preparation such as:

  • Students will start to lose interest in studies and/or will have to repeatedly revise the covered syllabus for it to stay fresh.

  • Due to the false sense of security from the additional time, students might relax and ease their studies. This will again hamper their chances of getting a good score in the exam.

What Impact will NCHMCT JEE Cancellation have on Hotel Management Admission Process 2023?

NCHMCT JEE is not the only entrance exam conducted for hotel management admissions in India. There are many other exams conducted at the university or institute level. Plus, for some courses such as BSc in Culinary Arts direct admissions are also possible. Therefore, hotel management aspirants will also have the option to go for direct admissions.

If NCHM JEE 2023 gets cancelled, colleges will conduct admissions based on class 12th marks. Colleges may create a merit list of the students based on class 12th score and students may be asked to fill in their preferences on first come first serve basis.

However, some students might not get admission to their preferred NCHMCT JEE participating college, as some students do not focus on getting a good score in the class 12th and instead study more for their entrance exams in 12th.

Hotel Management Admission Process if NCHMCT JEE 2023 is Cancelled

If NCHMCT JEE 2023 is cancelled, the 2023 admission process of IHMs and other hotel management colleges will have to be changed accordingly. If the exam is cancelled, candidates can expect the following changes or revisions in the hotel process of hotel management admissions.

Online Applications: Candidates will have to register and apply through the online application forms of the college. Candidates will have to submit their personal information, contact details, previous academic details such as marks in class 10th, class 12th roll no. etc. in the application forms.

Shortlisting of Candidates: Colleges will create a merit list of the candidates based on the information they have provided in their applications. Colleges will then decide a cut-off and shortlist candidates from the merit list who scored equal to or more than the cutoff.

Online Document Verification: Shortlisted candidates will then be asked to take part in the online counselling of their college. Students will have to follow the process specified by the college to complete their document verification.

Online Interview: Many colleges conduct personal interviews for shortlisted candidates. Chances are that many more colleges will start conducting interviews so that they are better able to judge the skills and motivation of a candidate.

The whole process is likely to see a shift toward the online including classes. The trends and forecast of COVID-19 trends in India suggest that the threat is not going away any time soon. This indicates that the chances of colleges reopening and offline classes beginning in 2023 is quite slim.

Therefore, students should expect that colleges will begin classes in the online mode at least till the end of 2023 and that is being said if one is conservative about their approach. Chances remain that online classes will stick to be the norm for the first quarter or even the first half of 2023.
