Tips to Ace the XAT 2026 DILR Section

The XAT DILR tests both speed and accuracy by combining difficult data interpretation sets with high school-level mathematical concepts. Like other MBA entrance exam sections, DILR preparation involves a methodical approach. Here is how you can prepare for XAT DILR to ace this particular section with the best scores:

  • Separate Strategy for DI & LR

You must separate your preparation plan into DI and LR, as the questions in the XAT DILR section can be categorized as calculation-based, counting-based, logic-based, and structure-based. This is due to the widely different nature of the topics and questions. As a result, you must be prepared to tackle each section effectively.

  • Take practice sessions

Practice is the most effective way to prepare for the DILR section of the XAT exam. Candidates should dedicate at least five hours a week, one hour each, to practising DILR questions. Moreover, they can take a sectional mock test to assess their level of preparation as well as to develop problem-solving skills for this section.

  • Learn shortcuts and approximation skills

XAT DI often involves lengthy data. Hence, doing exact calculations wastes time. Learn shortcuts to quickly calculate percentages, ratios, and averages. Also, use approximations for DI rather than precise calculations whenever possible. Also, regularly practice Vedic methods and mental math to reduce calculation time.

  • Use a smart attempt approach

Arrange all sets from easy to moderate to challenging as quickly as possible. Start with the simplest 2–3 sets to gain confidence and secure marks. Also, select moderate sets if time allows, but avoid becoming trapped on any one problem. Accuracy is important since XAT involves negative marking. Therefore, guessing without thinking might lower your percentile.

  • Choose the Right Books

There are multiple DILR books and studying resources written by MBA professionals that provide a comprehensive and descriptive understanding of the topics, question-solving techniques, and practice materials. Selecting the right book for XAT DILR preparation will make the further process easy and smooth.

  • Practice Different Types of Sets

If you want to do well on the XAT DILR section, you should practice different types of sets instead of just one. You must become familiar with all four types of questions asked in the XAT DILR section: calculation, counting, logic, and structure-based questions. For example, calculation-based sets help you become more proficient with percentages, ratios, and averages, and counting-based sets help you get better at resolving questions about distribution and arrangement.

  • Master Time Management

Proper time management is vital for XAT DILR. Try taking timed, full-length mock tests so you can get a realistic understanding of how to tackle questions on the real exam day. Each set should not take longer than 7 to 8 minutes; if it seems too complicated, skip it and go on. Remember, solving 2–3 sets accurately (8–10 questions) can fetch you a good percentile in XAT DILR.

Success in the XAT DILR section is more dependent on accuracy and set selection than on trying everything because the questions can often be time-consuming and presented in complex caselet formats. With consistent practice and a strategic approach, candidates can turn the DILR section into a scoring area and significantly boost their overall XAT percentile.
