The Schools of Planning and Architecture (SPA) comprises a group of public institutions which are autonomous in nature. These Schools of Planning and Architecture, or SPAs, are higher education institutes which function according to the rules and regulations set by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India. These institutes were set up to provide quality education in physical planning and architecture.

There are a total of three SPAs in India, namely -

• School of Planning and Architecture, Delhi

• School of Planning and Architecture, Bhopal

• School of Planning and Architecture, Vijayawada

These SPAs offer undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral and executive education programmes as a part of their curriculum. In this article, we will explore all these Schools of Planning and Architecture (SPAs) along with their fee structure, courses offered, location and admission processes.

School of Planning and Architecture, Delhi

The School of Planning and Architecture, Delhi is situated near ITO, in New Delhi’s Indraprastha Estate. SPA Delhi is a “Deemed to be University” - a status which it received in the year 1979 allowing SPA Delhi to broaden its academic horizons. In the year 2015, SPA Delhi was declared “An Institute of National Importance” under a Parliament Act.

What is SPA Delhi UG Admission Process?

• Eligibility - Applicants must have qualified their 10+2 examinations from a recognised Board and must have studied Mathematics as a compulsory subject at the 10+2 level. The applicants must have secured an aggregate of 50% at the qualifying exam level.
• Admissions - Admissions in the SPA Delhi UG programmes is given on the basis of the candidates’ performance in the JEE Mains exam. Final seat allotment is done by JoSAA. Foreign applicants are offered admissions at the SPU UG courses via DASA or Direct Admission of Students Abroad.

SPA Delhi PG Admission Process

• Eligibility - For admission into the SPA Delhi pg programmes, the applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline from a recognised University. For some specializations like Master of Urban Design, SPA Delhi requires the applicants to have a valid CEED score as well.
• Admissions - Admissions into the SPA Delhi pg programmes are done on the basis of an entrance test conducted by SPA Delhi followed by an interview round. The cumulative scores obtained by the candidates in the entrance exam and interview round is taken into consideration for final admissions at SPU Delhi pg programmes.

SPA Delhi PhD Admissions

• Eligibility - For admission into the SPA Delhi PhD programmes, the applicants must possess a Master’s degree in a relevant discipline and must have qualified their PG exams with a minimum aggregate of 55%.
• Admissions - SPA Delhi PhD programme admissions is completely a merit-based process.

The School of Planning and Architecture Bhopal came up in the year 2008 as an Institute of National Importance. The primary objective of SPA Bhopal is to provide the best Planners and Architects to the nation.

SPA Bhopal UG Admissions

• Eligibility - Applicants must have passed their 10+2 examination and must have studied Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics compulsorily at the qualifying level.
• Admission - For SPA Bhopal ug admissions, the applicants must have a valid JEE Main score as it will be used as a criterion for final admission and seat allotment process. Seat allotment is done through JoSAA.

SPA Bhopal PG Admissions

• Eligibility - For SPA Bhopal PG admissions, the applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline and must have an aggregate score of 55% at the qualifying exam level to be eligible for SPA Bhopal PG admissions.
• Admission - For PG admission at SPA Bhopal, the applicants must have a valid GATE score to secure a seat in their desired SPA Bhopal pg programmes. 60% of the total SPA Bhopal PG seats will be filled through CCMT, and the remaining seats via an entrance exam conducted by SPA Bhopal (not M.Des).

Those who do not have a valid GATE score can apply for SPA Bhopal pg admissions via the entrance examination conducted by SPA Bhopal.

SPA Bhopal PhD Admissions

• Eligibility - to be eligible for PhD admissions at SPA Bhopal, the applicants must have a Master’s degree in a relevant discipline from a recognised University. At the B.Arch level, the applicants must have a minimum aggregate of 55% and 60% at the qualifying Master’s degree level to be SPA Bhopal PhD eligible.
• Admission - PhD admissions at SPA Bhopal is done through an entrance test conducted by the Institute followed by an interview round.

School of Planning and Architecture (SPA), Vijayawada

The School of Planning and Architecture (SPA) Vijayawada was also established in the year 2008 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India. SPA Vijayawada or SPAV, as it is commonly known, is a Centrally Funded Technical Institution (CFTI) which is renowned for its excellent quality of education making it one of the leading Architecture and Planning Institutions in the country.

SPA Vijayawada UG Admissions

• Eligibility - Applicants must be a class XIIth pass out from a recognised Board and must have studied Mathematics as a compulsory subject at the 10+2 level and must have an aggregate score of 75%. SC/ST applicants can apply for SPA Vijayawada UG admissions with a 65% aggregate but the remaining criteria remain same. Foreign students are admitted through DASA.
• Admission - A valid JEE Main score is compulsory for admission into the UG programmes offered at SPA Vijayawada. Seat allocation will be done by JoSAA .

SPA Vijayawada PG Admissions

• Eligibility - For pg admissions at SPA Vijayawada, the applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline with a minimum of 60% aggregate (55% for backward category students) or 6.5 CGPA (6.0 for backward category students). A valid GATE score is also required for pg admissions at SPA Vijayawada.
• Admission - Final admissions at SPA Vijayawada pg programmes is given to the most suitable candidates via the CCMT centralized counselling process.

SPA Vijayawada PhD Admissions

• Eligibility - M.Arch or M.Plan degree holders with a minimum aggregate of 60% at the qualifying exam level are eligible for the PhD programmes at SPA Vijayawada.
• Admission - For final admission into the PhD programmes offered at SPA Vijayawada, the candidates must have appeared in exams like CSIR-NET, UGC NET etc and must have a valid score in one of these exams.
