Procedure of TNEA Rank List 2023 Preparation
The TNEA 2023 rank list is prepared on the basis of marks obtained by the candidates in Classes 11 & 12. Only the marks scored in group subjects such as Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry shall be taken into consideration. DTE will compile the TNEA 2022 rank list based on the marks scored by applicants in the qualifying examination's required disciplines. The previous year, the authorities cut the applicants' marks in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry to a base of 200. Mathematics has a larger weightage, i.e. 100 marks, whereas Physics and Chemistry marks are combined and transformed out of 100 marks (Mathematics = 100 & Physics + Chemistry = 100). For each subject, the weightage has been fixed, and the rank shall be defined as per the weightage. More details can be checked in the table below –
Name of the Subject | Marks Weightage |
---|---|
Chemistry | 50 |
Mathematics | 100 |
Physics | 50 |

TNEA Rank List 2023 Normalization Process
DTE uses a normalization procedure to equalize the marks obtained by candidates in qualifying examinations from various boards. The authorities have compared the marks obtained by applicants from other boards with those obtained by the Tamil Nadu State Board. Candidates can use the following example to learn the TNEA 2023 normalization approach.
For example, if a student's greatest scores in Physics from the State Board of Tamil Nadu are 100 and the highest marks in the same subject from any other Board are 90, both top marks will be deemed equivalent to 100. If a student from another Board receives 60 marks in Physics but the first mark in Physics in the same Board is 90, 60 marks will be deemed equal to 66.66 points as calculated below.
(100 x 60) / 90 = 66.66 %
Qualified students will be included in a unified TNEA rank list following the normalization of marks in the relevant topics in the qualifying examinations administered by separate Boards.
Procedure after TNEA Rank List 2023 Announcement
All the candidates who have been featured in the rank list have to fill out the choice filling form where the candidates need to choose the colleges and branches. Based on the TNEA rank and college preferences, the candidates are allocated seats. A separate seat allotment result is to be announced on the date specified by DTE Tamil Nadu.
After the seat allotment, the candidates will have to deposit the initial fee of Rs. 5,000 (Rs. 1,000 for Reserved Categories).

Tie Breaking Rule for TNEA Rank List 2023
If two or more applicants get the same marks in the qualifying examination, the authorities will prepare inter se merit. TNEA inter se merit 2023 will be prepared using the following rule:
- In the event of a tie, the applicant with the higher proportion of marks in Mathematics will be ranked higher.
- If the tie remains, the applicant with the higher proportion of marks in Physics will be assigned a higher TNEA rank.
- If the tie remains, the applicant with the higher percentage of marks in the fourth optional topic will be granted a higher position.
- If the tie still exists, the applicant who is older will be assigned a higher TNEA rank.
- If the tie remains, it will be broken using the TNEA Random Number. Candidates with a greater Random Number value will be ranked higher.
TNEA 2023 Counselling
Candidates selected from the TNEA rank list are eligible for the TNEA 2023 Counselling Process.
