Comprehension Passage 1

Civilisations have existed in the past and continued to settle down based on single inventions such as the use of iron or copper, or bronze. While the past can pride itself on the iron and the Bronze Ages, our current day's single invention, which has become as ubiquitous as the iron and bronze implements in the past ages, is the computer. A product of miraculous proportions, computers have transformed our lives for the better and keep doing so. Within less than half a century, they have impacted nearly every area of activity. The Computer Age is the new world.

No one might have expected the early calculating machines to be so rapidly worked out into the wonderfully advanced current-day computers. And this incredible transformation has been made by the computer without a ball being fired off or an atom of blood spilt. Computers have occupied prime positions in every sphere of activity, such as agriculture, weather forecasting, scientific research, designing, banks and financial institutions, space research and technology, communication and media, etc.

A computer is an electronic machine that performs calculations and processes data. Huge amounts of data can be processed efficiently and effectively at a very high speed. A computer can theoretically perform any task, but it cannot think, at least not yet! It therefore needs a human user and a collection of precise instructions, referred to as a program.

Comprehension Passage 2

Now arrives the Information Revolution, and with it arrives the 'network society'. It has opened up new vistas and challenged the limits of the capacity of political and economic leaders to contain the fallout of the changes. And what changes? Suddenly, those great walls and strong borders and barriers look laughably irrelevant. The Internet clears boundaries with ease--a tap of your mouse and what is being held on a computer in Indonesia yields to what's been compiled in Sweden. If Indonesia possesses divergent rules of decency or probity from Sweden, nothing very much can be done. Moreover, in the network society, the boundary line dividing public and private communication simply dissolves.

All this seems abhorrent to the majority of us, for change, and that too fast change, is not readily acceptable to everyone. Simple, easy and extensive access to information coupled with the ease of communication between people interested in the same areas, the fast pace of, and simplification of many technologies have all contributed to the empowerment of the individual. Though this is viewed as a positive development by some, others nervously indicate the negative. Crime has been made simpler; sitting in their bedrooms, individuals running their computers have been able to steal billions of dollars from bank accounts.

1. The Network society emerged due to

  1. Industrial Revolution
  2. Agricultural Revolution
  3. Information Revolution
  4. Silent Revolution

Answers: Information Revolution

2. Impunity in the passage represents

  1. liability for punishment
  2. freedom from punishment

It means:

  1. Jumping over the borders of the country
  2. Inaccessibility of data
  3. jumping of data on the Internet
  4. easy handling of the data

Answers: jumping over the borders of the country

4. The difference between public and private communication

  1. Figures
  2. Blurs
  3. Improves
  4. Exists

Answers: Blurs

5. “Crime has become easier”
Here, the word crime means:

  1. Violence
  2. Simplification of technologies
  3. Cyber-crime
  4. Information technology

Answer: Violence

Comprehension Passage 3

Children have always been taken for granted, though acres of documents have been churned out by international and national organisations attempting to improve the children's tomorrow. Despite all that has been written, all the commitments made, all the conventions signed, not enough has changed. A considerable number of children all over the world, and particularly in India, are part of the working masses - poor, deprived and disadvantaged. Millions of them labour in factories and fields, on street corners and in trash dumps, in private homes and in 'public' homes. Most do some work from a very young age, helping around the house or doing errands. Lacking education and a decaying sense of social obligation, these children are capable of doing considerable damage to society if they are not afforded equal status to others and offered equal protection and opportunities to improve to the best of their ability.

The presence of child labour in India is a complicated reality, a social offence, an offence against humanity. It is a symptom, not a disease. It is but natural that one might be tempted to inquire as to why the issue persists.

Poverty is the main cause of the spread and perpetuation of child labour. High numbers of dependent children, illiteracy among parents, insecure and low income, and low asset-income-generating possessions are more probable causes for children working instead of going to school. There is evidence provided by some studies of increased prevalence of child labour among poor single-parent households. But most kids work not always due to poverty but due to parental pressure, as parents themselves keep idle or need additional income to fulfil their respective addictions.

1. Child Labour is

  1. Disease
  2. Symptom
  3. Boon
  4. Social responsibility

Answer: Disease

2. What is the meaning of Destitute?

  1. Approved
  2. Delivered
  3. Deprived
  4. Designed

Answer: Approved

3. The theme of the passage is

  1. Manual labour
  2. Child labour
  3. Social crime
  4. Social responsibility

Answer: Child labour

4. The Occurrence of child labour is high in

  1. Joint families
  2. Nuclear families
  3. Single-parent families
  4. Poor single-parent families

Answer: Poor single-parent families

5. According to the passage, child labour is found in

  1. Garbage dumps
  2. Schools
  3. Warehouses
  4. Old age homes

Answer: Garbage dumps
