Question : A shopkeeper sells groceries using weights that are 15% less than the true weights and manages to make a profit of 20%. What is his total gain percentage?

Answer : 41.17%

Solution : Let's assume the weight of a grocery bag to be 1 kg. The actual weight, considering the 15% reduction, is 85% of 1000 grams, which equals 850 grams. If we consider the cost price of each gram to be Re. 1, then the cost price of each bag is Rs. 850. The selling price of 1 kg of bag is 120% of the true cost price. Therefore, SP = 120/100 x 1000 = Rs. 1200. The gain is calculated as the difference between the selling price and the cost price: Gain = 1200 - 850 = Rs. 350. Hence, the gain percentage is calculated as (350/850) x 100 = 41.17%.

Question : A man bought some toys at the rate of 10 for Rs. 40 and sold them at 8 for Rs. 35. What is his gain or loss percentage?

Answer : 9.375%

Solution : The cost price of 10 toys is Rs. 40, so the cost price of 1 toy is Rs. 4.
The selling price of 8 toys is Rs. 35, which means the selling price of 1 toy is Rs. 35/8.
The gain is calculated as the difference between the selling price and the cost price of 1 toy: Gain = (35/8) - 4 = 3/8. Hence, the gain percentage is calculated as [(3/8)/4] x 100 = 9.375%.

Question : A customer wanted to purchase an item marked for ₹10000. Shopkeepers offered two types of discounts, 25% flat discount or successive discounts of 14% and 12%. Which is the better offer for the customers and by how much?

  1. first offer by ₹68
  2. second offer by ₹68
  3. first offer by ₹32
  4. second offer by ₹100

Answer : A

Solution : 25% flat discount
The selling price of the item = 75100×10000 = ₹7500
Successive discounts of 14% and 12%
The price of the item after a 14% discount = 86100 × 10000  = ₹8600
Price of the item after 12% discount = 88100 × 8600 = ₹7568
Difference between selling prices = 7568 – 7500 = ₹68
The first offer is better at ₹68.
Hence, the correct answer is Option A

Question : Hari suffered a loss of 8% by selling an article. If he had sold it for ₹300 more, he would have made a profit of 4%. Find his CP (in ₹).

a) 2400
b) 2250
c) 2575
d) 2500

Answer : 2500

Solution : Let the cost price of the article = 100C
Hari suffered a loss of 8% by selling an article.
The selling price of the article =  92100 × 100C = 92C
If he had sold it for ₹300 more, he would have made a profit of 4%.
92C + 300 = 104100 × 100C
92C + 300 = 104C
12C = 300
C = 25
The cost price of the article = ₹2500
Hence, the correct answer is Option D

Question : It takes six technicians a total of 10 hr to build a new server from Direct Computer, with each working at the same rate. If six technicians start to build the server at 11 am, and one technician per hour is added beginning at 5 pm, at what time will the server be completed?

a) 6.40 pm

b) 7 pm

c) 7.20 pm

d) 8 pm

Answer : D

Solution :

Let the work done by each technician in one hour be 1 unit.
Therefore, total work to be done = 60 units.
From 11 AM to 5 PM, work done = 6*6 = 36 units.
Work remaining = 60 – 36 = 24 units.
Work done in the next 3 hours = 7 units + 8 units + 9 units = 24 units.
Therefore, the work gets done by 8 PM.

Question : Two boats, travelling at 5 and 10 km per hour, head directly towards each other. They begin at a distance of 20 km from each other. How far apart are they (in km) one minute before they collide?

a) 1/12

b) 1/6

c) 1/4

d) 1/3

Answer : C

Solution : The relative speed is 15 km/hr = 15 km/60 min = 0.25 km/min = 250 m/min.
Therefore, one minute before they collide, they are at a distance of 250m.

XAT Percentage Questions

The section below has some XAT Percentage Questions and the Important Formulas you require to solve these questions.

Important XAT Percentage Formulas:

  1. Find what percentage of X is Y: Y/X x 100

Question : A woman earns ₹ 1,000/day. After some weeks, she earns ₹1,160/day. By how much percentage did her earnings
increase?

a) 18%

b) 16%

c) 17%

d) 15%

Answer : B

Question : The average of some numbers is 54.6. If 75% of the numbers are increased by 5.6 each, and the rest are decreased by 8.4 each, then what is the average of the numbers so obtained?

a) 55.6

b) 55.8

c) 56.7

d) 56.3

Answer : C

Solution :

New average of the numbers = (average + increment/decrements)
The average of some numbers = 54.6
75% of the numbers increased by 5.6 each, and the rest are decreased by 8.4 each so,
New average of the numbers = 54.6 + (5.6 \times 75/100 – 8.4 \times 25/100) = 54.6 + 4.2 – 2.1 = 56.7.
