How to Prepare for Your Business School Interview

MBA admissions in India are done based on candidates’ performance in the entrance exam as well as in bachelor’s degrees. Most colleges select students based on their entrance exam scores. However, some of the colleges such as MDI Gurgaon, FMS Delhi, IIFT Delhi, JBIMS Mumbai, Xavier School of Management, and MICA Ahmedabad conduct an additional round for MBA admissions i.e personal interview. Candidates need to ace the personal interview round to secure admission in B-School. Here we have provided some of the important tips that can help you prepare for your business school interview.

How to Prepare for Your Business School Interview

Here are the important tips and points to prepare for your business school interview.

#Schedule your interview ASAP

You are advised to schedule your interview as soon as possible. This will help you improve your chances of getting selected for admission at that business school. You can visit the college admission portal and choose the dates.

#Go through the B-Schools’ mission statement

You are advised to read the mission statement as well as the vision of the selected B School. The interviewer might ask you about the college’s mission. You are also advised to go through the awards, recognitions, courses offered, and other achievements of the business school.

#Do Your Research

You are advised to do proper research on determining whether the interview will be blind or not. A “blind” interview means that the interviewer has not gone through your application in detail. In this case, he will ask you questions about your goals, achievements, and your interests. In a blind interview, you can also share the information that is already provided in your CV. On the other hand, in a non-blind interview, the interviewer has already read your application and he will ask questions from the topics that are not covered in the CV.

#Know Your Application

You are advised to know all the details you have written in your CV. The interviewer will ask questions from the information provided in your application. Given that you've most likely applied to many business schools, make sure to spend some time studying the essays and CV you have submitted to each before going in for the interview round.

#Practice Common Questions

There are some of the questions such as “Why this school?”, “What are your strengths/weaknesses?” and “What are your career goals?” are commonly asked in the personal interview. You are advised to practice these questions. We have provided some examples of commonly asked questions in personal interviews and how to answer them in the table provided below.

Why this school?

Here you need to explain your reason for choosing that B-School for admission. You can compare the selected business school with other good B-Schools.

What are your career goals?

Here you have to share your goals including what you want to be and what is your dream company. The best way to answer this question is to suggest a clear profile & industry that you intend to pursue after completing your MBA.

What are your strengths/weaknesses?

In this type of question, you are advised to tell your weakness first so that you can end on a positive note. You are advised to choose the strength and weaknesses depending on what is highly relevant to your selected profile.

Why do want to do an MBA?

Here you have to explain the reason for choosing MBA over other postgraduate courses. You can also share your views on how MBA can help you succeed in your chosen career.

Tell Us About Yourself

In this type of question, you have to share your achievements, education, and interests. You can also tell your hobbies and any important personal detail.

#Practice, Practice, and Practice

You should prepare for a business school interview the same way you would for any other job interview. You can make a list of hot topics and important questions. You should read newspapers, articles, magazines, and novels daily. This will not only improve your communication skills but also boost your confidence. You are advised to read all the answers you have prepared for the common interview questions. It should be noted that you do not over-rehearse all the questions since they might sound scripted. Apart from this, you cal also ask a friend for a mock interview.

#Dry Clean Your Suit

Appearance is also an important key to crack an interview. You are advised to wear a suit while appearing for the interview round. You should decide what to wear on the interview day at least one week before the interview and make sure it’s not wrinkled or dirty. If it is, take time to get it clean and make it ready before the interview day. Besides this, you should also avoid wearing unnecessary fashion accessories while appearing for the interview.

Apart from all the tips provided above, you should try to be yourself and be confident while answering questions in a personal interview. If you have previous work experience, be prepared with answers related to your job profile and sector.
