Do not worry about the higher JoSAA cutoffs and admission chances in top B.Tech colleges. Check out the list of alternative options other than JoSAA counselling.

What if you Don’t Clear the JoSAA Cutoffs? Here is the List of Alternative Options

JoSAA 2025 Cutoffs: Through JoSAA counselling 2025, a student can get admission in NITs, IIITs, IITs GFTIs. JoSAA conducts six rounds of counselling, and the majority of takers aspire for NIT admission, keeping IIIT/ GFTI as alternative options. While admission is possible up to 3 lakh rank in JEE Main, securing admission in popular NITs and B.Tech specialisations is limited for a low rank in JEE Main (above 1,00,000). While CSE is the most preferred course through JoSAA counselling 2025, followed by IT, ECE, EEE, and Mechanical and Civil Engineering are the other engineering courses .

With more than five lakh takers competing for admission in premier institutes every year, the competition has always been high. While NITs offer a total number of 23,994 seats in B.Tech, IIITs offer 7126 and 6,759 seats by GFTIs, and IITs offer 16,598 seats. From the seat matrix data, it is evident that not all students participating in JoSAA counselling may get admission to the desired institute and course. In such a case, finding the right alternative option may be a challenging task. Getting admission to a private college can be one of the options, but finding the right college may be a challenging task.

Candidates looking for alternative options other than JoSAA Counselling are divided into two categories –

  • Students aspiring for admission in top NITs/ IIITs but failed to get admission due to higher cutoffs
  • Students with a low JEE Main rank and failed to get admission in desired B.Tech specialization

The below-mentioned alternative options are relevant for both categories.

List of Alternative Options if you did not clear JoSAA Cutoffs

Here are some of the best alternative options if you did not clear the JoSAA cutoff 2025 -

CSAB Special Round Counselling

After the conclusion of six rounds of JoSAA counselling, two special rounds are conducted by CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board) for the vacant seats. Due to the non-payment of seat acceptance/ admission fee, certain seats will remain vacant and the same will be added to CSAB counselling. The list of vacant seats shall be displayed in advance so that the candidates can plan college options and participate in the counselling process. However, it is advisable to check the previous year's closing rank of CSAB to have a tentative idea of admission chances.

Pros of Participating in CSAB Counselling

  • Admission to top NITs can still be possible if your rank is less than 50,000 in JEE Main
  • CSE admission is possible in certain NITs/ IIITs if your rank is 5000-20,000
  • Option to select colleges based on the vacant seat information disclosed

Cons of Participating in CSAB Counselling

  • By the time CSAB counselling ends, state-level B.Tech counselling concludes and the admission chances will become limited (this is a disadvantage if you did not get admission in CSAB counselling)
  • Closing rank data of CSAB mostly changes every year and estimating admission chances based on previous years’ closing ranks might not be accurate

State-Level B.Tech Counselling

State-level B.Tech counselling can be the second option if you are aiming for admission in popular B.Tech specialisations and colleges. The majority of states like Karnataka, Kerala, Gujarat, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Maharashtra consider state-level entrance exam scores for admission. In addition, states such as Punjab, Gujarat, West Bengal, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan accept JEE Main scores for B.Tech admission. Usually, states conduct 2-3 rounds of counselling for B.Tech admission, and students waiting for JoSAA seat allotment until Round 6 will have chances to participate in the 2 nd / final counselling in different states.

Pros of Participating in State-Level Counselling

  • If you have a good rank in the state-level entrance exam/ JEE Main/ Class 12, admission in top private B.Tech colleges and popular courses like CSE can be possible
  • There is flexibility to participate in JoSAA & state-level counselling at a time. For example, if you get admission to a top NIT, you can withdraw from state-level counselling, or if you get admission to a top private college, you can withdraw from JoSAA counselling
  • More college options than JoSAA
  • Fewer fees compared to NITs
  • Fee reimbursement/ scholarship schemes/ TFW offered by different states for reserved/ economically backwards categories

Cons of Participating in State-Level Counselling

  • The seat acceptance/ exit process in certain states is complicated and involves a lot of stages
  • Certain states conclude state-level counselling before the completion of the JoSAA six rounds. For example, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Rajasthan wrap up counselling earlier than JoSAA
  • Finding the right private college might be challenging

Admission to Deemed Universities

Securing admission to deemed universities could be the other option. Deemed universities admit students based on the university-level entrance exam/ JEE Main/ State-Level Entrance Exam score. However, most deemed universities wrap up merit-based admissions before the JoSAA/ state-level admission process. After JoSAA counselling, there is an option to get admission in deemed universities under management quota or merit-based, if the university is still open for the same

Pros of Getting Admission in Deemed Universities

  • Top-deemed universities like BITS, VIT, SRM, LPU, and Amity offer the best placements
  • Scholarships/ fee waiver schemes are offered to candidates with a good academic record

Cons of Getting Admission in Deemed Universities

  • If candidates have already secured admission to a deemed university, they need not worry about other alternative options. Therefore, there are no cons as such

Management Quota/ Direct Admission in Private Colleges

The final option to consider is the management quota/ direct admission in private B.Tech colleges. Through this option, you can get admission to top private B.Tech colleges. A certain number of seats in each private B.Tech college are reserved under the direct admission policy. However, the fee structure of the management quota is higher than the of merit-based admission. We are not mentioning the pros and cons of management quota admission, as such admission is purely a student/ parent decision. Selecting the top private college and getting admission amid high competition can be challenging in this case.

Dear Student,

To be eligible for IIIT Hyderabad’s Undergraduate Entrance Examination (UGEE) in 2025, candidates must have passed Class 12 or an equivalent qualifying examination with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM) as compulsory subjects. Additionally, candidates are required to have obtained a minimum aggregate of 60% marks in PCM. This criterion is mandatory for applying and appearing in UGEE, which is the entrance exam for the institute’s dual degree programmes (B.Tech + Master of Science by Research). Since the requirement specifies a 60% aggregate in PCM, if your aggregate is 58%, you generally do not meet the official eligibility criteria …
