Are you aspiring to pursue B.Tech from one of the top engineering colleges in India? If yes, it is mandatory to have awareness of B.Tech admission process, list of popular/ good B.Tech colleges in India, engineering entrance exams, dates of entrance exams and others. Not all the engineering colleges in Indiafollow a similar admission process for the admission to B.Tech courses. Several engineering colleges have different components to determine the eligibility of candidates for B.Tech admission. On the other hand, the B.Tech course involves different specialisations like Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering etc. Students are free to choose any specialisation that suits their aim/ aspiration.
In order to know about the B.Tech admission process 2021, you should be aware of the B.Tech application process, B.Tech eligibility criteria, B.Tech admission requirements, and B.Tech entrance exams. There are multiple engineering entrance exams in India at national and state level. It is up to the students to choose the national or state-level engineering test depending on their requirements.
Students are often confused about the terms B.E (Bachelor of Engineering) and B.Tech (Bachelor of Technology). Some colleges may offer B.E while some colleges offer B.Tech, and the major differences between a B.E and B.Tech degree can be checked here.
In this article, CollegeDekho has come up with a detailed B.Tech admission process 2021 along with the list of good engineering colleges, engineering entrance exams, and admission requirements for UG engineering courses. B.Tech Admission Process 2021
B.Tech Admission process for the academic session 2021-22 will begin in the month May/ June. Almost, all the states initiate the entrance exam process for UG B.Tech admission in March/ April. B.Tech admission process in IITs, NITs, and IIITs is different from UG engineering admission process in private engineering colleges. Similarly, the B.Tech admissions in one state vary from another. Some of the key points with regard to B.Tech admission process are elaborated below -
Acceptability of Engineering Entrance Exam Score
Between various engineering colleges in India, the major difference one can find with regard to B.Tech admission process is the acceptability of entrance test score. Not all the engineering colleges in India accept the score of a single engineering entrance exam for B.Tech admissions. The acceptability of entrance test score varies from college to college and state to state. JEE Main is the widely acceptable entrance test, and most of the engineering colleges in India accept JEE Mains score for B.Tech admissions. Apart from JEE Main, state-level engineering entrance exams are also popular among students. However, state-level engineering entrance exams are confined to a specific state.
Multiple Engineering Entrance Exams and Score Acceptability
In some states, both national-level and state-level engineering entrance test is acceptable for B.Tech admissions. For instance, B.Tech admissions in Maharashtra are based on JEE Main/ MHT CET. Himachal Pradesh is another state where 15% of seats are reserved for students with JEE Main score. On the other hand, Himachal Pradesh government also conducts a state-level engineering entrance exam to fill 85% of engineering seats under state quota.
Direct Admission without Entrance
In most private engineering colleges, there is a chance for getting direct admission without an entrance test score. Such admissions will be treated as management quota admissions, and the B.Tech fees collected for management quota admissions is higher that entrance-based admissions.
Centralised Admission Process without Entrance
In some states, there is no entrance exam for B.Tech courses, and the admission is purely based on Class 12 merit. In such states, the centralised admission process is conducted for UG engineering admissions. For example, Anna University in Tamil Nadu conducts centralised admission process, i.e., Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA) for UG engineering courses. It is mandatory for all students in the state to take part in TNEA to secure a seat under state or concession quota.

Which is the Best Engineering Entrance Exam for B.Tech Admission?
Students must target an engineering entrance exam depending on their requirements. If a student wants to secure admission in government institutes such as IITs, NITs, IIITs and Government-Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs), he/ she must aim for JEE Main/ JEE Advanced. Such students must be ready to relocate or migrate to the place where he gets B.Tech admission.
For example, if a student from Andhra Pradesh wants to secure admission in NIT Warangal, he/ she must be ready to migrate to Warangal after getting admission through JEE Main. Students must stay in the hostels of respective institutes or seek paid accommodation outside the campus. Students with such a mindset can aim for national-level engineering entrance exams like JEE Main/ JEE Advanced.
Similarly, students who want to gain exposure by taking admission in institutes outside their state can aim for national-level engineering entrance exams.
If a student wants to get B.Tech admission within his/ her state, it is better to aim for the state-level engineering entrance exam. For example, if a student from Telangana wants to get B.Tech admission within the state, he/ she can appear for TS EAMCET exam. Such students will get engineering admission in their locality. Students who do not wish to stay in the hostel or paid accommodation and prefer to travel from home to college or college to home can aim for state-level engineering entrance exam.
From the above analysis, you might have understood that we could not find out the best entrance exam for engineering courses, as different engineering exams are bound to certain requirements of students and parents.
How to Apply for B.Tech Course?
Before applying for B.Tech admission, it is mandatory to have a valid entrance exam score (national or state). Therefore, students need to apply for the relevant engineering entrance exam depending on their aspirants and requirements as explained above. Some of the examples related to B.Tech application process are given below.
Example 1: - After qualifying the engineering entrance exam, respective institutes or states conduct centralised admission process for B.Tech courses. Students must register for the centralised admission process to secure admission. For example, if a student qualifies JEE Main, and wants to secure admission in NIT, he/ she must take part in the centralised admission process conducted by JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority). Here, students need to submit a separate application form for each NIT. After the announcement of JEE Main results, students can directly visit the official website of JoSAA and submit the application form.
Example 2: - If students are willing to join in a deemed university, they will have to submit an application form through the official website of the respective deemed university. The admission process will be conducted by the varsity separately.
Example 3: - Similar to JoSAA, several states also conduct centralised admission process for B.Tech courses. For example, B.Tech aspirants in Kerala must register for counselling process conducted by CEE Kerala after qualifying KEAM entrance exam. The major advantage of taking part in such counselling process is that students need to apply for each engineering college in the state separately.
Example 4: - If a student wants to take direct admission in an engineering college without an entrance test score, he/ she can submit separate application form through the official website of the college or visit the college directly to obtain the application fee.
Students need to pay a registration or application fee for B.Tech admission process. The respective authority will decide the registration fee.
B.Tech Eligibility Criteria
The B.Tech eligibility criteria is the same across the country, and the basic qualification required to join B.Tech course in India is as follows –
- For pursuing B.Tech course, one must pass Class 12 in Science stream. The students must have Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics as the subjects in Class 12. Students who have studied only these subjects in Class 12 are treated eligible for B.Tech admission.
- In addition, students must score at least 50% of marks in Class 12 to be eligible for B.Tech admission in engineering colleges across the country. However, students belonging to reserved categories such as SC/ ST will have the relaxation of up to 5% in the minimum qualifying marks.
- For some of the engineering streams like Biomedical Engineering, students must have studied Biology as one of the subjects in Class 12.
The Lateral Entry B.Tech Admission Process and Eligibility Criteria is completely different from four-year B.Tech eligibility criteria.
