GATE Exam Day Guidelines: Do’s and Dont’s

Many applicants have a tendency to forget crucial information throughout the hectic preparation process, which might ruin an otherwise successful day. For the day before the exam, a few last-minute suggestions have been provided so that you don't run into any issues that might have been avoided. You can check the GATE Do’s and Don'ts given below:

Do's for GATE 2026 Exam Day

1. Arrange Required Documents and Get a Good Night’s Sleep

The night before the exam, try to get at least 7-8 hours of sleep. A well-rested mind helps you stay focused and sharp during the test. Avoid last-minute cramming; it’ is better to feel fresh and alert than tired and overwhelmed. Check the GATE exam center the day before. You will save a lot of time by doing this exercise to obtain a solid sense of the route to take, and the time it will take, and to reduce the likelihood that you will get lost on the day of the exam. Prepare your exam-day gear the day before. Both your GATE admit card and the actual photo ID that you listed on your GATE 2026 registration must be present in order to enter the test room.

2. Arrive Early at the Exam Center

Aim to reach the exam center at least 60-90 minutes before the scheduled time. This gives you time to complete any check-in processes without feeling rushed. Arriving early also helps you relax and get comfortable with the environment, which can reduce anxiety. Keep in mind that you will only be permitted inside 35 minutes before the exam's commencement and that you may only exit after the test has ended. You won't be permitted to enter the exam room if you come after 9:30 am (IST) for the morning session and 2:30 pm (IST) for the afternoon session.

3. Bring All Required Documents

Before the GATE exam, you must download the GATE 2026 admit card , print it in color, and save a copy to your Google Drive. The rationale is that it is necessary for PSU recruitment through GATE as well as M.Tech admissions . The GATE scores are valid for three years, so you might get them back if you wish to follow the same in around a year. Similar to PSU recruitment, you won't have to go very far if you have the opportunity to apply for employment based on your GATE 2026 result in the upcoming years. Double-check that these documents are in your bag before leaving, as missing documents can lead to being denied entry. As soon as you enter the exam room, look at the seating plans to see where you could be assigned.

5. Read the Exam Instructions Carefully

Before the exam begins, listen to the instructions given by the invigilators and read the guidelines on the computer screen. Follow the instructions to avoid unintentional mistakes, such as misunderstanding the format of questions or not knowing the marking scheme. Keep in mind that cell phones are not permitted inside. It would be best to avoid carrying them as a secure container might not be available. You risk being disqualified and having your phone taken if you carry one inside and forget, both of which are losses that should be prevented at all costs

6. Plan Your Time Wisely

GATE is a timed exam, so it’s essential to have a strategy for managing your time. Spend the first few minutes reviewing the questions and choose the ones you feel confident about answering first. Try to allocate time for each section: General Aptitude, Engineering Mathematics, and Core Subject. This will help you keep track of your progress and avoid spending too much time on any one section.

7. Start with Easier Questions

Begin by answering questions you are sure of, as this will build confidence and help you settle into the exam. Mark the difficult questions to review later. If time permits, review your answers, especially the ones you were unsure about. Rechecking can help you catch any small mistakes or miscalculations.

9. Stay Calm and Focused

Take deep breaths if you start feeling nervous. Keeping a positive and calm mindset will help you avoid silly mistakes and approach each question with a clear head. If you get stuck on a question, don’t dwell on it; move on to the next question and return to it later if time allows.

Don’ts for GATE 2026 Exam Day

While attempting the GATE exam you should keep the following GATE 2026 exam day guidelines in mind. Here are some dont's that you must follow.

1. Don’t Skip Breakfast

Having a nutritious breakfast is important to keep your energy levels up. Avoid heavy, greasy foods that could make you feel sluggish. Eat something light and filling like oatmeal, fruits, or a sandwich to keep your mind alert.

2. Don’t Bring Restricted Items

Items like mobile phones, calculators, smartwatches, and other electronic gadgets are not allowed in the exam hall. Leave these items at home or in your bag outside the examination area. Make sure to follow the guidelines provided by the GATE authorities regarding permitted and prohibited items.

3. Avoid Discussing Syllabus or Topics with Others

Discussing last-minute topics with friends or fellow test-takers can create unnecessary stress and confusion. Focus on keeping a clear mind instead. Trust in your preparation, and avoid getting caught up in any last-minute doubts or new information.

4. Don’t Waste Time on a Single Question

It’s easy to get fixated on a challenging question, but spending too much time on one can affect your overall time management. If a question seems too hard, mark it and move on. Remember, GATE 2026 has a mixture of easy, moderate, and difficult questions. Don’t let one question take up time you could spend on easier ones.

5. Don’t Make Random Guesses

Since GATE has negative markings for incorrect answers in multiple-choice questions, avoid guessing unless you are sure. For NAT questions, there’s no negative marking, so you can take a calculated guess, but make sure it’s based on logic or elimination.

6. Don’t Overthink the Questions

Sometimes, you may tend to overthink and read too much into simple questions, leading to mistakes. Trust your knowledge and answer with confidence. Stick to what you know and avoid adding extra interpretations to straightforward questions.

7. Don’t Panic if You See Unfamiliar Questions

If you encounter questions that seem difficult or unfamiliar, stay calm. Focus on the sections and questions you’re strong in and revisit the tough ones later. GATE exams often include challenging questions, but remember that you don’t need to answer every question correctly to achieve a good score.

8. Don’t Ignore the Marking Scheme

GATE has different marks assigned to questions (1-mark and 2-mark questions) and negative marking for incorrect answers. Make sure you understand the marking scheme before you start. Tackle higher-mark questions if you’re confident, as they can boost your score significantly.

9. Don’t Forget to Submit Your Exam

At the end of the exam, ensure that you have submitted your answers. Don’t wait until the last second; if there’s an option to submit early, do so to avoid any technical issues. Double-check the submission confirmation on the screen before you leave.

Dear Student,

It is not mandatory to pay the tuition fee for the college allotted in Phase 1 to be eligible for Phase 2 of TS PGECET 2025 counselling. If you wish to upgrade your seat you can participate in Phase 2 web options even if you do not pay the fees or report to the college allotted in the first phase. However, if you have already paid the fee for the Phase 1 college and then get a new seat in the second phase of counselling, the fees paid earlier be transferred to the new college. Any difference …
